HYMN XXXVII. INDRA.


वार्त्रहत्यायvārtrahatyāya शवसेśavase पर्तनाषाह्यायpṛtanāṣāhyāya चca |

इन्द्रindra तवाtvā वर्तयामसिvartayāmasi ||

O INDRA, for the strength that slays Vṛtra and conquers in the fight,
We turn thee hitherward to us.
3.37.1

अर्वाचीनंarvācīnaṃ सुsu तेte मनmana उतuta चक्षुःcakṣuḥ शतक्रतोśatakrato |

इन्द्रindra कर्ण्वन्तुkṛṇvantu वाघतःvāghataḥ ||

O Indra, Lord of Hundred Powers, may those who praise thee hitherward.
Direct thy spirit and thine eye.
3.37.2

नामानिnāmāni तेte शतक्रतोśatakrato विश्वाभिर्गीर्भिरीमहेviśvābhirghīrbhirīmahe |

इन्द्राभिमातिषाह्येindrābhimātiṣāhye ||

O Indra, Lord of Hundred Powers, with all our songs we invocate
Thy names for triumph over foes.
3.37.3

पुरुष्टुतस्यpuruṣṭutasya धामभिःdhāmabhiḥ शतेनśatena महयामसिmahayāmasi |

इन्द्रस्यindrasya चर्षणीध्र्तःcarṣaṇīdhṛtaḥ ||

We strive for glory through the powers immense of him whom many praise,
Of Indra who supports mankind.
3.37.4

इन्द्रंindraṃ वर्त्रायvṛtrāya हन्तवेhantave पुरुहूतमुपpuruhūtamupa बरुवेbruve |

भरेषुbhareṣu वाजसातयेvājasātaye ||

For Vṛtra's slaughter I address Indra whom many invocate,
To win us booty in the wars.
3.37.5

वाजेषुvājeṣu सासहिर्भवsāsahirbhava तवामीमहेtvāmīmahe शतक्रतोśatakrato |

इन्द्रindra वर्त्रायहन्तवेvṛtrāyahantave ||

In battles be victorious. We seek thee, Lord of Hundred Powers,
Indra, that Vṛtra may be slain.
3.37.6

दयुम्नेषुdyumneṣu पर्तनाज्येpṛtanājye पर्त्सुतूर्षुpṛtsutūrṣu शरवस्सुśravassu चca |

इन्द्रindra साक्ष्वाभिमातिषुsākṣvābhimātiṣu ||

In splendid combats of the hosts, in glories where the fight is won.
Indra, be victor over foes.
3.37.7

शुष्मिन्तमंśuṣmintamaṃ नna ऊतयेūtaye दयुम्निनंdyumninaṃ पाहिpāhi जाग्र्विमjāghṛvim |

इन्द्रindra सोमंशतक्रतोsomaṃśatakrato ||

Drink thou the Soma for our help, bright, vigilant, exceeding strong,
O Indra, Lord of Hundred Powers.
3.37.8

इन्द्रियाणिindriyāṇi शतक्रतोśatakrato याyā तेte जनेषुjaneṣu पञ्चसुpañcasu |

इन्द्रindra तानिtāni ताtaā वर्णेvṛṇe ||

O Śatakratu, powers which thou mid the Five Races hast displayed-
These, Indra, do I claim of thee.
3.37.9

अगन्निन्द्रaghannindra शरवोśravo बर्हदbṛhad दयुम्नंdyumnaṃ दधिष्वdadhiṣva दुष्टरमduṣṭaram |

उतut तेte शुष्मंśuṣmaṃ तिरामसिtirāmasi ||

Indra, great glory hast thou gained. Win splendid fame which none may mar
We make thy might perpetual.
3.37.10

अर्वावतोarvāvato नna आā गह्यथोghahyatho शक्रśakra परावतःparāvataḥ |

उu लोकोloko यस्तेyaste अद्रिवadriva इन्द्रेहindreha ततtata आā गहिghahi ||

Come to us either from anear, Or, Śakra, come from far away.
Indra, wherever be thy home, come to us thence, O Thunder-armed.
