HYMN XLVII. ĀDITYAS.


महिmahi वोvo महतामवोmahatāmavo वरुणvaruṇa मित्रmitra दाशुषेdāśuṣe |

यमादित्याyamādityā अभिabhi दरुहोdruho रक्षथाrakṣathā नेमघंnemaghaṃ नशदनेहसोnaśadanehaso वva ऊतयःūtayaḥ सुूतयोsuūtayo वva ऊतयःūtayaḥ ||

GREAT help ye give the worshipper, Varuṇa, Mitra, Mighty Ones! No sorrow ever reaches him whom ye, Ādityas, keep from harm. Yours are incomparable aids, and good the succour they afford.
8.47.1

विदाvidā देवाdevā अघानामादित्यासोaghānāmādityāso अपाक्र्तिमapākṛtim |

पक्षाpakṣā वयोvayo यथोपरिyathopari वयस्मेvyasme शर्मśarma यछतानेहसोyachatānehaso वva ऊतयःūtayaḥ सुूतयोsuūtayo वva ऊतयःūtayaḥ ||

O Gods, Ādityas, well ye know the way to keep all woes afar.
As the birds spread their sheltering wings, spread your protection over us.
8.47.2

वयस्मेvyasme अधिadhi शर्मśarma ततtat पक्षाpakṣā वयोvayo नna यन्तनyantana |

विश्वानिviśvāni विश्ववेदसोviśvavedaso वरूथ्याvarūthyā मनामहे.अनेहसोmanāmahe.anehaso वva ऊतयःūtayaḥ सुूतयोsuūtayo वva ऊतयःūtayaḥ ||

As the birds spread their sheltering wings let your protection cover us.
We mean all shelter and defence, ye who have all things for your own.
8.47.3

यस्माyasmā अरासतarāsata कषयंkṣayaṃ जीवातुंjīvātuṃ चca परचेतसःpracetasaḥ |

मनोर्विश्वस्यmanorviśvasya घेदिमghedima आदित्याādityā रायrāya ईशते.अनेहसोīśate.anehaso वva ऊतयःūtayaḥ सुूतयोsuūtayo वva ऊतयःūtayaḥ ||

To whomsoever they, Most Wise, have given a home and means of life,
O'er the whole riches of this man they, the Ādityas, have control.
8.47.4

परिpari णोṇo वर्णजन्नघाvṛṇajannaghā दुर्गाणिdurghāṇi रथ्योrathyo यथाyathā |

सयामेदिन्द्रस्यsyāmedindrasya शर्मण्यादित्यानामुतावस्यनेहसोśarmaṇyādityānāmutāvasyanehaso वva ऊतयःūtayaḥ सुूतयोsuūtayo वva ऊतयःūtayaḥ ||

As drivers of the car avoid ill roads, let sorrows pass us by.
May we be under Indra's guard, in the Ādityas’ favouring grace.
8.47.5

परिह्व्र्तेदनाparihvṛtedanā जनोjano युष्मादत्तस्यyuṣmādattasya वायतिvāyati |

देवाdevā अदभ्रमाशadabhramāśa वोvo यमादित्याyamādityā अहेतनानेहसोahetanānehaso वva ऊतयःūtayaḥ सुूतयोsuūtayo वva ऊतयःūtayaḥ ||

For verily men sink and faint through loss of wealth which ye have given.
Much hath he gained from you, O Gods, whom ye, Ādityas, have approached.
8.47.6

नna तंtaṃ तिग्मंtighmaṃ चनcana तयजोtyajo नna दरासदभिdrāsadabhi तंtaṃ गुरुghuru |

यस्माyasmā उu शर्मśarma सप्रथsapratha आदित्यासोādityāso अराध्वमनेहसोarādhvamanehaso वva ऊतयःūtayaḥ सुूतयोsuūtayo वva ऊतयःūtayaḥ ||

On him shall no fierce anger fall, no sore distress shall visit him,
To whom, Ādityas, ye have lent your shelter that extendeth far.
8.47.7

युष्मेyuṣme देवाdevā अपिapi षमसिṣmasi युध्यन्तyudhyanta इवiva वर्मसुvarmasu |

यूयंyūyaṃ महोmaho नna एनसोenaso यूयमर्भादुरुष्यतानेहसोyūyamarbhāduruṣyatānehaso वva ऊतयःūtayaḥ सुूतयोsuūtayo वva ऊतयःūtayaḥ ||

Resting in you, O Gods, we are like men who fight in coats of mail.
Ye guard us from each great offence, ye guard us from each lighter fault.
8.47.8

अदितिर्नaditirna उरुष्यत्वदितिःuruṣyatvaditiḥ शर्मśarma यछतुyachatu |

माताmātā मित्रस्यmitrasya रेवतो.अर्यम्णोrevato.aryamṇo वरुणस्यvaruṇasya चानेहसोcānehaso वva ऊतयःūtayaḥ सुूतयोsuūtayo वva ऊतयःūtayaḥ ||

May Aditi defend us, may Aditi guard and shelter us,
Mother of wealthy Mitra and of Aryaman and Varuṇa.
8.47.9

यदyad देवाःdevāḥ शर्मśarma शरणंśaraṇaṃ यदyad भद्रंbhadraṃ यदनातुरमyadanāturam |

तरिधातुtridhātu यदyad वरूथ्यंvarūthyaṃ तदस्मासुtadasmāsu विvi यन्तनानेहसोyantanānehaso वva उतयःसुूतयोutayaḥsuūtayo वva ऊतयःūtayaḥ ||

The shelter, Gods, that is secure, auspicious, free from malady,
A sure protection, triply strong, even that do ye extend to us.
8.47.10

आदित्याādityā अवava हिhi खयताधिkhyatādhi कूलादिवkūlādiva सपशःspaśaḥ |

सुतीर्थमर्वतोsutīrthamarvato यथानुyathānu नोno नेषथाneṣathā सुगमनेहसोsughamanehaso वva ऊतयःūtayaḥ सुूतयोsuūtayo वva ऊतयःūtayaḥ ||

Look down on us, Ādityas, as a guide exploring from the bank.
Lead us to pleasant ways as men lead horses to an easy ford.
8.47.11

नेहneha भद्रंbhadraṃ रक्षस्विनेrakṣasvine नावयैnāvayai नोपयाnopayā उतuta |

गवेghave चca भद्रंbhadraṃ धेनवेdhenave वीरायvīrāya चca शरवस्यते.अनेहसोśravasyate.anehaso नna ऊतयःūtayaḥ सुूतयोsuūtayo वva ऊतयःūtayaḥ ||

Ill be it for the demons' friend to find us or come near to us.
But for the milch-cow be it well, and for the man who strives for fame.
8.47.12

यदाविर्यदपीच्यंyadāviryadapīcyaṃ देवासोdevāso अस्तिasti दुष्क्र्तमduṣkṛtam |

तरितेtrite तदtad विश्वमाप्त्यviśvamāptya आरेāre अस्मदasmad दधातनानेहसोdadhātanānehaso वva ऊतयःūtayaḥ सुूतयोवsuūtayova ऊतयःūtayaḥ ||

Each evil deed made manifest, and that which is concealed, O Gods,
The whole thereof remove from us to Trita Āptya far away.
8.47.13

यच्चyacca गोषुghoṣu दुष्वप्न्यंduṣvapnyaṃ यच्चास्मेyaccāsme दुहितर्दिवःduhitardivaḥ |

तरितायtritāya तदtad विभावर्याप्त्यायvibhāvaryāptyāya पराparā वहानेहसोvahānehaso वva ऊतयःūtayaḥ सुूतयोsuūtayo वva ऊतयःūtayaḥ ||

Daughter of Heaven, the dream that bodes evil to us or to our kine,
Remove, O Lady of the Light, to Trita Āptya far away.
8.47.14

निष्कंniṣkaṃ वाvā घाghā कर्णवतेkṛṇavate सरजंsrajaṃ वाvā दुहितर्दिवःduhitardivaḥ |

तरितेtrite दुष्वप्न्यंduṣvapnyaṃ सर्वमाप्त्येsarvamāptye परिpari दद्मस्यनेहसोdadmasyanehaso वva ऊतयःūtayaḥ सुूतयोsuūtayo वva ऊतयःūtayaḥ ||

Even if, O Child of Heaven, it make a garland or a chain of gold,
The whole bad dream, whate’er it be, to Trita Āptya we consign.
8.47.15

तदन्नायtadannāya तदपसेtadapase तंtaṃ भागमुपसेदुषेbhāghamupaseduṣe |

तरितायtritāya चca दवितायdvitāya चोषोcoṣo दुष्वप्न्यंduṣvapnyaṃ वहानेहसोvahānehaso वva ऊतयःūtayaḥ सुूतयोsuūtayo वva ऊतयःūtayaḥ ||

To him whose food and work is this, who comes to take his share therein,
To Trita, and to Dvita, Dawn! bear thou the evil dream away.
8.47.16

यथाyathā कलांkalāṃ यथाyathā शफंśaphaṃ यथyatha रणंṛṇaṃ संनयामसिsaṃnayāmasi |

एवाevā दुष्वप्न्यंduṣvapnyaṃ सर्वमाप्त्येsarvamāptye संsaṃ नयामस्यनेहसोnayāmasyanehaso वva ऊतयःसुूतयोūtayaḥsuūtayo वva ऊतयःūtayaḥ ||

As we collect the utmost debt, even the eighth and sixteenth part,
So unto Āptya we transfer together all the evil dream.
8.47.17

अजैष्माद्यासनामajaiṣmādyāsanāma चाभूमानागसोcābhūmānāghaso वयमvayam |

उषोuṣo यस्मादyasmād दुष्वप्न्यादभैष्मापduṣvapnyādabhaiṣmāpa तदुछत्वनेहसोtaduchatvanehaso वva ऊतयःūtayaḥ सुूतयोवsuūtayova ऊतयःūtayaḥ ||

Now have we conquered and obtained, and from our trespasses are free.
Shine thou away the evil dream, O Dawn, whereof we are afraid. Yours are incomparable aids, and good the succour they afford.
