HYMN CLVI. VIṢṆU


भवाbhavā मित्रोmitro नna शेव्योśevyo घर्तासुतिर्विभूतद्युम्नghṛtāsutirvibhūtadyumna एवयाevayā उu सप्रथाःsaprathāḥ |

अधाadhā तेte विष्णोviṣṇo विदुषाviduṣā चिदर्ध्यcidardhya सतोमोstomo यज्ञश्चराध्योyajñaścarādhyo हविष्मताhaviṣmatā ||

FAR-SHINING, widely famed, going thy wonted way, fed with the oil, be helpful. Mitra-like, to us.
So, Viṣṇu, e’en the wise must swell thy song of praise, and he who hath oblations pay thee solemn rites.
1.156.1

यःyaḥ पूर्व्यायpūrvyāya वेधसेvedhase नवीयसेnavīyase सुमज्जानयेsumajjānaye विष्णवेviṣṇave ददाशतिdadāśati |

योyo जातमस्यjātamasya महतोmahato महिmahi बरवतbravat सेदुsedu शरवोभिर्युज्यंśravobhiryujyaṃ चिदभ्यसतcidabhyasat ||

He who brings gifts to him the Ancient and the Last, to Viṣṇu who ordains, together with his Spouse,
Who tells the lofty birth of him the Lofty One, shall verily surpass in glory e’en his peer.
1.156.2

तमुtamu सतोतारःstotāraḥ पूर्व्यंpūrvyaṃ यथाyathā विदvida रतस्यṛtasya गर्भंgharbhaṃ जनुषापिपर्तनjanuṣāpipartana |

आस्यāsya जानन्तोjānanto नामnāma चिदcid विवक्तनvivaktana महस्तेmahaste विष्णोviṣṇo सुमतिंsumatiṃ भजामहेbhajāmahe ||

Him have ye satisfied, singers, as well as ye know, primeval germ of Order even from his birth.
Ye, knowing e’en his name, have told it forth: may we, Viṣṇu, enjoy the grace of thee the Mighty One.
1.156.3

तमस्यtamasya राजाrājā वरुणस्तमश्विनाvaruṇastamaśvinā करतुंkratuṃ सचन्तsacanta मारुतस्यmārutasya वेधसःvedhasaḥ |

दाधारdādhāra दक्षमुत्तममहर्विदंdakṣamuttamamaharvidaṃ वरजंvrajaṃ चca विष्णुःviṣṇuḥ सखिवानपोर्णुतेsakhivānaporṇute ||

The Sovran Varuṇa and both the Aśvins wait on this the will of him who guides the Marut host.

आā योyo विवायvivāya सचथायsacathāya दैव्यdaivya इन्द्रायindrāya विष्णुःviṣṇuḥ सुक्र्तेsukṛte सुक्र्त्तरःsukṛttaraḥ |

वेधाvedhā अजिन्वतajinvat तरिषधस्थtriṣadhastha आर्यंāryaṃ रतस्यṛtasya भागेbhāghe यजमानमाभजतyajamānamābhajat ||

Even he the Heavenly One who came for fellowship, Viṣṇu to Indra, godly to the godlier,
Who Maker, throned in three worlds, helps the Āryan man, and gives the worshipper his share of Holy Law.
