HYMN XXII. AŚVINS AND OTHERS


परातर्युजाprātaryujā विvi बोधयाश्विनावेहbodhayāśvināveha गछतामghachatām |

अस्यasya सोमस्यsomasya पीतयेpītaye ||

WAKEN the Aśvin Pair who yoke their car at early morn: may they
Approach to drink this Soma juice.
1.22.1

याyā सुरथाsurathā रथीतमोभाrathītamobhā देवाdevā दिविस्प्र्शाdivispṛśā |

अश्विनाaśvinā ताtā हवामहेhavāmahe ||

We call the Aśvins Twain, the Gods borne in a noble car, the best
Of charioteers, who reach the heavens.
1.22.2

याyā वांvāṃ कशाkaśā मधुमत्यश्विनाmadhumatyaśvinā सून्र्तावतीsūnṛtāvatī |

तयाtayā यज्ञंyajñaṃ मिमिक्षतमmimikṣatam ||

Dropping with honey is your whip, Aśvins, and full of pleasantness
Sprinkle therewith the sacrifice.
1.22.3

नहिnahi वामस्तिvāmasti दूरकेdūrake यत्राyatrā रथेनrathena गछथःghachathaḥ |

अश्विनाaśvinā सोमिनोsomino गर्हमghṛham ||

As ye go thither in your car, not far, O Aśvins, is the home
Of him who offers Soma juice.
1.22.4

हिरण्यपाणिमूतयेhiraṇyapāṇimūtaye सवितारमुपsavitāramupa हवयेhvaye |

सsa चेत्ताcettā देवतापदमdevatāpadam ||

For my protection I invoke the golden-handed Savitar.
He knoweth, as a God, the place.
1.22.5

अपांapāṃ नपातमवसेnapātamavase सवितारमुपsavitāramupa सतुहिstuhi |

तस्यtasya वरतान्युश्मसिvratānyuśmasi ||

That he may send us succour, praise the Waters’ Offspring Savitar:
Fain are we for his holy ways.
1.22.6

विभक्तारंvibhaktāraṃ हवामहेhavāmahe वसोश्चित्रस्यvasościtrasya राधसःrādhasaḥ |

सवितारंन्र्चक्षसमsavitāraṃnṛcakṣasam ||

We call on him, distributer of wondrous bounty and of wealth,
On Savitar who looks on men.
1.22.7

सखायsakhāya आā निni षीदतṣīdata सविताsavitā सतोम्योstomyo नुnu नःnaḥ |

दाताdātā राधांसिrādhāṃsi शुम्भतिśumbhati ||

Come hither, friends, and seat yourselves Savitar, to be praised by us,
Giving good gifts, is beautiful.
1.22.8

अग्नेaghne पत्नीरिहाpatnīrihā वहvaha देवानामुशतीरुपdevānāmuśatīrupa |

तवष्टारंtvaṣṭāraṃ सोमपीतयेsomapītaye ||

O Agni, hither bring to us the willing Spouses of the Gods,
And Tvaṣṭar, to the Soma draught.
1.22.9

आā गनाghnā अग्नaghna इहावसेihāvase होत्रांhotrāṃ यविष्ठyaviṣṭha भारतीमbhāratīm |

वरूत्रींvarūtrīṃ धिषणांdhiṣaṇāṃ वहvaha ||

Most youthful Agni, hither bring their Spouses, Hotrā, Bhāratī,
Varūtrī, Dhiṣaṇā, for aid.
1.22.10

अभीabhī नोno देवीरवसाdevīravasā महःmahaḥ शर्मणाśarmaṇā नर्पत्नीःnṛpatnīḥ |

अछिन्नपत्राःachinnapatrāḥ सचन्तामsacantām ||

Spouses of Heroes, Goddesses, with whole wings may they come to us
With great protection and with aid.
1.22.11

इहेन्द्राणीमुपihendrāṇīmupa हवयेhvaye वरुणानींvaruṇānīṃ सवस्तयेsvastaye |

अग्नायींaghnāyīṃ सोमपीतयेsomapītaye ||

Indrāṇī, Varuṇānī, and Agnāyī hither I invite,
For weal, to drink the Soma juice.
1.22.12

महीmahī दयौःdyauḥ पर्थिवीpṛthivī चca नna इमंimaṃ यज्ञंyajñaṃ मिमिक्षतामmimikṣatām |

पिप्र्तांpipṛtāṃ नोno भरीमभिःbharīmabhiḥ ||

May Heaven and Earth, the Mighty Pair, bedew for us our sacrifice,
And feed us full with nourishments.
1.22.13

तयोरिदtayorid घर्तवतghṛtavat पयोpayo विप्राviprā रिहन्तिrihanti धीतिभिःdhītibhiḥ |

गन्धर्वस्यghandharvasya धरुवेdhruve पदेpade ||

Their water rich with fatness, there in the Gandharva's steadfast place,
The singers taste through sacred songs.
1.22.14

सयोनाsyonā पर्थिविpṛthivi भवान्र्क्षराbhavānṛkṣarā निवेशनीniveśanī |

यछाyachā नःnaḥ शर्मśarma सप्रथःsaprathaḥ ||

Thornless be thou, O Earth, spread wide before us for a dwelling-place:
Vouchsafe us shelter broad and sure.
1.22.15

अतोato देवाdevā अवन्तुavantu नोno यतोyato विष्णुर्विचक्रमेviṣṇurvicakrame |

पर्थिव्याःpṛthivyāḥ सप्तधामभिःsaptadhāmabhiḥ ||

The Gods be gracious unto us even from the place whence Viṣṇu strode
Through the seven regions of the earth!
1.22.16

इदंidaṃ विष्णुर्विviṣṇurvi चक्रमेcakrame तरेधाtredhā निni दधेdadhe पदमpadam |

समूळ्हमस्यsamūḷhamasya पांसुरेpāṃsure ||

Through all this world strode Viṣṇu; thrice his foot he planted, and the whole
Was gathered in his footstep's dust.
1.22.17

तरीणिtrīṇi पदाpadā विvi चक्रमेcakrame विष्णुर्गोपाviṣṇurghopā अदाभ्यःadābhyaḥ |

अतोato धर्माणिdharmāṇi धारयनdhārayan ||

Viṣṇu, the Guardian, he whom none deceiveth, made three steps; thenceforth
Establishing his high decrees.
1.22.18

विष्णोःviṣṇoḥ कर्माणिkarmāṇi पश्यतpaśyata यतोyato वरतानिvratāni पस्पशेpaspaśe |

इन्द्रस्यindrasya युज्यःyujyaḥ सखाsakhā ||

Look ye on Viṣṇu's works, whereby the Friend of Indra, close-allied,
Hath let his holy ways be seen.
1.22.19

तदtad विष्णोःviṣṇoḥ परमंparamaṃ पदंpadaṃ सदाsadā पश्यन्तिpaśyanti सूरयःsūrayaḥ |

दिवीवdivīva चक्षुराततमcakṣurātatam ||

The princes evermore behold that loftiest place where Viṣṇu is,
Laid as it were an eye in heaven.
1.22.20

तदtad विप्रासोviprāso विपन्यवोvipanyavo जाग्र्वांसःjāghṛvāṃsaḥ समिन्धतेsamindhate |

विष्णोर्यतviṣṇoryat परमंparamaṃ पदमpadam ||

This, Viṣṇu's station most sublime, the singers, ever vigilant,
Lovers of holy song, light up.
