HYMN XXV. VARUṆA.


यच्चिदyaccid धिdhi तेte विशोviśo यथाyathā परpra देवdeva वरुणvaruṇa वरतमvratam |

मिनीमसिद्यवि-दयविminīmasidyavi-dyavi ||

WHATEVER law of thine, O God, O Varuṇa, as we are men,
Day after day we violate.
1.25.1

माmā नोno वधायvadhāya हत्नवेhatnave जिहीळानस्यjihīḷānasya रीरधःrīradhaḥ |

माmā हर्णानस्यhṛṇānasya मन्यवेmanyave ||

give us not as a prey to death, to be destroyed by thee in wrath,
To thy fierce anger when displeased.
1.25.2

विvi मर्ळीकायmṛḷīkāya तेte मनोmano रथीरश्वंrathīraśvaṃ नna सन्दितमsanditam |

गीर्भिर्वरुणghīrbhirvaruṇa सीमहिsīmahi ||

To gain thy mercy, Varuṇa, with hymns we bind thy heart, as binds
The charioteer his tethered horse.
1.25.3

पराparā हिhi मेme विमन्यवःvimanyavaḥ पतन्तिpatanti वस्यैष्टयेvasyaiṣṭaye |

वयोvayo नna वसतीरुपvasatīrupa ||

They flee from me dispirited, bent only on obtaining wealth,
As to their nests the birds of air.
1.25.4

कदाkadā कषत्रश्रियंkṣatraśriyaṃ नरमाnaramā वरुणंvaruṇaṃ करामहेkarāmahe |

मर्ळीकायोरुचक्षसमmṛḷīkāyorucakṣasam ||

When shall we bring, to be appeased, the Hero, Lord of warrior might,
Him, the far-seeing Varuṇa?
1.25.5

तदितtadit समानमाशातेsamānamāśāte वेनन्ताvenantā नna परpra युछतःyuchataḥ |

धर्तव्रतायdhṛtavratāya दाशुषेdāśuṣe ||

This, this with joy they both accept in common: never do they fail
The ever-faithful worshipper.
1.25.6

वेदाvedā योyo वीनांvīnāṃ पदमन्तरिक्षेणpadamantarikṣeṇa पततामpatatām |

वेदveda नावःnāvaḥ समुद्रियःsamudriyaḥ ||

He knows the path of birds that fly through heaven, and, Sovran of the sea,
He knows the ships that are thereon.
1.25.7

वेदveda मासोmāso धर्तव्रतोdhṛtavrato दवादशdvādaśa परजावतःprajāvataḥ |

वेदाvedā यya उपजायतेupajāyate ||

True to his holy law, he knows the twelve moons with their progeny:
He knows the moon of later birth.
1.25.8

वेदveda वातस्यvātasya वर्तनिमुरोर्र्ष्वस्यvartanimurorṛṣvasya बर्हतःbṛhataḥ |

वेदाvedā येye अध्यासतेadhyāsate ||

He knows the pathway of the wind, the spreading, high, and mighty wind:
He knows the Gods who dwell above.
1.25.9

निni षसादṣasāda धर्तव्रतोdhṛtavrato वरुणःvaruṇaḥ पस्त्यास्वाpastyāsvā |

साम्राज्यायsāmrājyāya सुक्रतुःsukratuḥ ||

Varuṇa, true to holy law, sits down among his people; he,
Most wise, sits there to govern all.
1.25.10

अतोato विश्वान्यद्भुताviśvānyadbhutā चिकित्वानभिcikitvānabhi पश्यतिpaśyati |

कर्तानिkṛtāni याyā चकर्त्वाcakartvā ||

From thence
perceiving
he beholds all wondrous things, both what hath been,
And what hereafter will be done.
1.25.11

सsa नोno विश्वाहाviśvāhā सुक्रतुरादित्यःsukraturādityaḥ सुपथाsupathā करतkarat |

परpra णṇa आयूंषिāyūṃṣi तारिषतtāriṣat ||

May that Āditya, very wise, make fair paths for us all our days:
May he prolong our lives for us.
1.25.12

बिभ्रदbibhrad दरापिंdrāpiṃ हिरण्ययंhiraṇyayaṃ वरुणोvaruṇo वस्तvasta निर्णिजमnirṇijam |

परिpari सपशोspaśo निni षेदिरेṣedire ||

Varuṇa, wearing golden mail, hath clad him in a shining robe.
His spies are seated found about.
1.25.13

नna यंyaṃ दिप्सन्तिdipsanti दिप्सवोdipsavo नna दरुह्वाणोdruhvāṇo जनानामjanānām |

नna देवमभिमातयःdevamabhimātayaḥ ||

The God whom enemies threaten not, nor those who tyrannize o’er men,
Nor those whose minds are bent on wrong.
1.25.14

उतuta योyo मानुषेष्वाmānuṣeṣvā यशश्चक्रेyaśaścakre असाम्याasāmyā |

अस्माकमुदरेष्वाasmākamudareṣvā ||

He who gives glory to mankind, not glory that is incomplete,
To our own bodies giving it.
1.25.15

पराparā मेme यन्तिyanti धीतयोdhītayo गावोghāvo नna गव्यूतीरनुghavyūtīranu |

इछन्तीरुरुचक्षसमichantīrurucakṣasam ||

Yearning for the wide-seeing One, my thoughts move onward unto him,
As kine unto their pastures move.
1.25.16

संsaṃ नुnu वोचावहैvocāvahai पुनर्यतोpunaryato मेme मध्वाभ्र्तमmadhvābhṛtam |

होतेवhoteva कषदसेkṣadase परियमpriyam ||

Once more together let us speak, because my meath is brought: priest-like
Thou eatest what is dear to thee.
1.25.17

दर्शंdarśaṃ नुnu विश्वदर्षतंviśvadarṣataṃ दर्शंdarśaṃ रथमधिrathamadhi कषमिkṣami |

एताetā जुषतjuṣata मेme गिरःghiraḥ ||

Now saw I him whom all may see, I saw his car above the earth:
He hath accepted these my songs.
1.25.18

इमंimaṃ मेme वरुणvaruṇa शरुधीśrudhī हवमद्याhavamadyā चca मर्ळयmṛḷaya |

तवामवस्युराtvāmavasyurā चकेcake ||

Varuṇa, hear this call of mine: be gracious unto us this day
Longing for help I cried to thee.
1.25.19

तवंtvaṃ विश्वस्यviśvasya मेधिरmedhira दिवश्चdivaśca गमश्चghmaśca राजसिrājasi |

सsa यामनिप्रतिyāmaniprati शरुधिśrudhi ||

Thou, O wise God, art Lord of all, thou art the King of earth and heaven
Hear, as thou goest on thy way.
1.25.20

उदुत्तमंuduttamaṃ मुमुग्धिmumughdhi नोno विvi पाशंpāśaṃ मध्यमंmadhyamaṃ चर्तcṛta |

अवाधमानिavādhamāni जीवसेjīvase ||

Release us from the upper bond, untie the bond between, and loose
The bonds below, that I may live.
