HYMN L. SŪRYA.


उदुudu तयंtyaṃ जातवेदसंjātavedasaṃ देवंdevaṃ वहन्तिvahanti केतवःketavaḥ |

दर्शेdṛśe विश्वायviśvāya सूर्यमsūryam ||

HIS bright rays bear him up aloft, the God who knoweth all that lives,
Sūrya, that all may look on him.
1.50.1

अपapa तयेtye तायवोtāyavo यथाyathā नक्षत्राnakṣatrā यन्त्यक्तुभिःyantyaktubhiḥ |

सूरायsūrāya विश्वचक्षसेviśvacakṣase ||

The constellations pass away, like thieves, together with their beams,
Before the all-beholding Sun.
1.50.2

अद्र्श्रमस्यadṛśramasya केतवोketavo विvi रश्मयोraśmayo जनाननुjanānanu |

भराजन्तोbhrājanto अग्नयोaghnayo यथाyathā ||

His herald rays are seen afar refulgent o’er the world of men,
Like flames of fire that burn and blaze.
1.50.3

तरणिर्विश्वदर्शतोtaraṇirviśvadarśato जयोतिष्क्र्दसिjyotiṣkṛdasi सूर्यsūrya |

विश्वमाviśvamā भासिरोचनमbhāsirocanam ||

Swift and all beautiful art thou, O Sūrya, maker of the light,
Illuming all the radiant realm.
1.50.4

परत्यंpratyaṃ देवानांdevānāṃ विशःviśaḥ परत्यङङpratyaṅṅ उदेषिudeṣi मानुषानmānuṣān |

परत्यंpratyaṃ विश्वंviśvaṃ सवर्द्र्शेsvardṛśe ||

Thou goest to the hosts of Gods, thou comest hither to mankind,
Hither all light to be beheld.
1.50.5

येनाyenā पावकpāvaka चक्षसाcakṣasā भुरण्यन्तंbhuraṇyantaṃ जनाननुjanānanu |

तवंtvaṃ वरुणvaruṇa पश्यसिpaśyasi ||

With that same eye of thine wherewith thou lookest brilliant Varuṇa,
Upon the busy race of men,
1.50.6

विvi दयामेषिdyāmeṣi रजसrajas पर्थ्वहाpṛthvahā मिमानोmimāno अक्तुभिःaktubhiḥ |

पश्यञpaśyañ जन्मानिjanmāni सूर्यsūrya ||

Traversing sky and wide mid-air, thou metest with thy beams our days,
Sun, seeing all things that have birth.
1.50.7

सप्तsapta तवाtvā हरितोharito रथेrathe वहन्तिvahanti देवdeva सूर्यsūrya |

शोचिष्केशंśociṣkeśaṃ विचक्षणvicakṣaṇa ||

Seven Bay Steeds harnessed to thy car bear thee, O thou farseeing One,
God, Sūrya, with the radiant hair.
1.50.8

अयुक्तayukta सप्तsapta शुन्ध्युवःśundhyuvaḥ सूरोsūro रथस्यrathasya नप्त्यःnaptyaḥ |

ताभिर्यातिtābhiryāti सवयुक्तिभिःsvayuktibhiḥ ||

Sūrya hath yoked the pure bright Seven, the daughters of the car; with these,
His own dear team, he goeth forth.
1.50.9

उदud वयंvayaṃ तमससtamasas परिpari जयोतिषjyotiṣ पश्यन्तpaśyanta उत्तरमuttaram |

देवंdevaṃ देवत्राdevatrā सूर्यमगन्मsūryamaghanma जयोतिरुत्तममjyotiruttamam ||

Looking upon the loftier light above the darkness we have come
To Sūrya, God among the Gods, the light that is most excellent.
1.50.10

उद्यन्नद्यudyannadya मित्रमहmitramaha आरोहन्नुत्तरांārohannuttarāṃ दिवमdivam |

हर्द्रोगंhṛdroghaṃ ममसूर्यmamasūrya हरिमाणंharimāṇaṃ चca नाशयnāśaya ||

Rising this day, O rich in friends, ascending to the loftier heaven,
Sūrya remove my heart's disease, take from me this my yellow hue.
1.50.11

शुकेषुśukeṣu मेme हरिमाणंharimāṇaṃ रोपणाकासुropaṇākāsu दध्मसिdadhmasi |

अथोatho हारिद्रवेषुhāridraveṣu मेme हरिमाणंharimāṇaṃ निni दध्मसिdadhmasi ||

To parrots and to starlings let us give away my yellowness,
Or this my yellowness let us transfer to Haritāla trees.
1.50.12

उदगादयमादित्योudaghādayamādityo विश्वेनviśvena सहसाsahasā सहsaha |

दविषन्तंdviṣantaṃ मह्यंmahyaṃ रन्धयनrandhayan मोmo अहमaham दविषतेdviṣate रधमradham ||

With all his conquering vigour this Āditya hath gone up on high,
Giving my foe into mine hand: let me not be my foeman's prey.
1.50.13
