HYMN LIX. AGNI.


वयाvayā इदग्नेidaghne अग्नयस्तेaghnayaste अन्येanye तवेtve विश्वेviśve अम्र्ताamṛtā मादयन्तेmādayante |

वैश्वानरvaiśvānara नाभिरसिnābhirasi कषितीनांkṣitīnāṃ सथूणेवsthūṇeva जनानुपमिदjanānupamid ययन्थyayantha ||

THE other fires are, verily, thy branches; the Immortals all rejoice in thee, O Agni.
Centre art thou, Vaiśvānara, of the people, sustaining men like a deep-founded pillar.
1.59.1

मूर्धाmūrdhā दिवोdivo नाभिरग्निःnābhiraghniḥ पर्थिव्याpṛthivyā अथाभवदरतीathābhavadaratī रोदस्योःrodasyoḥ |

तंtaṃ तवाtvā देवासो.अजनयन्तdevāso.ajanayanta देवंdevaṃ वैश्वानरvaiśvānara जयोतिरिदार्यायjyotiridāryāya ||

The forehead of the sky, earth's centre, Agni became the messenger of earth and heaven.
Vaiśvānara, the Deities produced thee, a God, to be a light unto the Ārya.
1.59.2

आā सूर्येsūrye नna रश्मयोraśmayo धरुवासोdhruvāso वैश्वानरेvaiśvānare दधिरे.अग्नाdadhire.aghnā वसूनिvasūni |

याyā पर्वतेष्वोषधीष्वप्सुparvateṣvoṣadhīṣvapsu याyā मानुषेष्वसिmānuṣeṣvasi तस्यtasya राजाrājā ||

As in the Sun firm rays are set for ever, treasures are in Vaiśvānara, in Agni.
Of all the riches in the hills, the waters, the herbs, among mankind, thou art the Sovran.
1.59.3

बर्हतीbṛhatī इवiva सूनवेsūnave रोदसीrodasī गिरोghiro होताhotā मनुष्योmanuṣyo नna दक्षःdakṣaḥ |

सवर्वतेsvarvate सत्यशुष्मायsatyaśuṣmāya पूर्वीर्वैश्वानरायpūrvīrvaiśvānarāya नर्तमायnṛtamāya यह्वीःyahvīḥ ||

As the great World-halves, so are their Son's praises; skilled, as a man, to act, is he the Herald.
Vaiśvānara, celestial, truly mighty, most manly One, hath many a youthful consort.
1.59.4

दिवश्चितdivaścit तेte बर्हतोbṛhato जातवेदोjātavedo वैश्वानरvaiśvānara परpra रिरिचेririce महित्वमmahitvam |

राजाrājā कर्ष्टीनामसिkṛṣṭīnāmasi मानुषीणांmānuṣīṇāṃ युधाyudhā देवेभ्योdevebhyo वरिवश्चकर्थvarivaścakartha ||

Even the lofty heaven, O Jātavedas Vaiśvānara, hath not attained thy greatness.
Thou art the King of lands where men are settled, thou hast brought comfort to the Gods in battle.
1.59.5

परpra नूnū महित्वंmahitvaṃ वर्षभस्यvṛṣabhasya वोचंvocaṃ यंyaṃ पूरवोpūravo वर्त्रहणंvṛtrahaṇaṃ सचन्तेsacante |

वैश्वानरोvaiśvānaro दस्युमग्निर्जघन्वानधूनोतdasyumaghnirjaghanvānadhūnot काष्ठाkāṣṭhā अवava शम्बरंśambaraṃ भेतbhet ||

Now will I tell the greatness of the Hero whom Pūru's sons follow as Vṛtra's slayer:
Agni Vaiśvānara struck down the Dasyu, cleave Śambara through and shattered down his fences.
1.59.6

वैश्वानरोvaiśvānaro महिम्नाmahimnā विश्वक्र्ष्टिर्भरद्वाजेषुviśvakṛṣṭirbharadvājeṣu यजतोyajato विभावाvibhāvā |

शातवनेयेśātavaneye शतिनीभिरग्निःśatinībhiraghniḥ पुरुणीथेpuruṇīthe जरतेjarate सून्र्तावानsūnṛtāvān ||

Vaiśvānara, dwelling by his might with all men, far-shining, holy mid the Bharadvājas,
Is lauded, excellent, with hundred praises by Purūṇītha, son of Śatavani.
