HYMN LXXXI. INDRA.


इन्द्रोindro मदायmadāya वाव्र्धेvāvṛdhe शवसेśavase वर्त्रहाvṛtrahā नर्भिःnṛbhiḥ |

तमिनtamin महत्स्वाजिषूतेमर्भेmahatsvājiṣūtemarbhe हवामहेhavāmahe सsa वाजेषुvājeṣu परpra नो.अविषतno.aviṣat ||

THE men have lifted Indra up, the Vṛtra slayer, to joy and strength:
Him, verily, we invocate in battles whether great or small: be he our aid in deeds of might.
1.81.1

असिasi हिhi वीरvīra सेन्यो.असिsenyo.asi भूरिbhūri पराददिःparādadiḥ |

असिasi दभ्रस्यdabhrasya चिद्व्र्धोcidvṛdho यजमानायyajamānāya शिक्षसिśikṣasi सुन्वतेsunvate भूरिbhūri तेte वसुvasu ||

Thou, Hero, art a warrior, thou art giver of abundant spoil.
Strengthening e’en the feeble, thou aidest the sacrificer, thou givest the offerer ample wealth.
1.81.2

यदुदीरतyadudīrata आजयोājayo धर्ष्णवेdhṛṣṇave धीयतेdhīyate धनाdhanā |

युक्ष्वाyukṣvā मदच्युताmadacyutā हरीharī कंkaṃ हनःhanaḥ कंkaṃ वसौvasau दधो.अस्मानिन्द्रdadho.asmānindra वसौvasau दधःdadhaḥ ||

When war and battles are on foot, booty is laid before the bold.
Yoke thou thy wildly-rushing Bays. Whom wilt thou slay and whom enrich? Do thou, O Indra, make us rich.
1.81.3

करत्वामहाननुष्वधंkratvāmahānanuṣvadhaṃ भीमbhīma आā वाव्र्धेvāvṛdhe शवःśavaḥ |

शरियर्ष्वśriyaṛṣva उपाकयोर्निupākayorni शिप्रीśiprī हरिवानharivān दधेdadhe हस्तयोर्वज्रमायसमhastayorvajramāyasam ||

Mighty through wisdom, as he lists, terrible, he hath waxed in strength.
Lord of Bay Steeds, strong-jawed, sublime, he in joined hands for glory's sake hath grasped his iron thunderbolt.
1.81.4

आā पप्रौpaprau पार्थिवंpārthivaṃ रजोrajo बद्बधेbadbadhe रोचनाrocanā दिविdivi |

नna तवावानिन्द्रtvāvānindra कश्चनkaścana नna जातोjāto नna जनिष्यते.अतिjaniṣyate.ati विश्वंviśvaṃ ववक्षिथvavakṣitha ||

He filled the earthly atmosphere and pressed against the lights in heaven.
None like thee ever hath been born, none, Indra, will be born like thee. Thou hast waxed mighty over all.
1.81.5

योyo अर्योaryo मर्तभोजनंmartabhojanaṃ पराददातिparādadāti दाशुषेdāśuṣe |

इन्द्रोindro अस्मभ्यंशिक्षतुasmabhyaṃśikṣatu विvi भजाbhajā भूरिbhūri तेte वसुvasu भक्षीयbhakṣīya तवtava राधसःrādhasaḥ ||

May he who to the offerer gives the foeman's man-sustaining food,
May Indra lend his aid to us. Deal forth—abundant is thy wealth—that in thy bounty I may share.
1.81.6

मदे-मदेmade-made हिhi नोno ददिर्यूथाdadiryūthā गवांghavāṃ रजुक्रतुःṛjukratuḥ |

संsaṃ गर्भायपुरूghṛbhāyapurū शतोभयाहस्त्याśatobhayāhastyā वसुvasu शिशीहिśiśīhi रायrāya आā भरbhara ||

He, righteous-hearted, at each time of rapture gives us herds of kine.
Gather in both thy hands for us treasures of many hundred sorts. Sharpen thou us, and bring us wealth.
1.81.7

मादयस्वmādayasva सुतेsute सचाsacā शवसेśavase शूरśūra राधसेrādhase |

विद्माvidmā हिhi तवापुरूवसुमुपtvāpurūvasumupa कामानkāmān सस्र्ज्महे.अथाsasṛjmahe.athā नो.अविताno.avitā भवbhava ||

Refresh thee, Hero, with the juice outpoured for bounty and for strength.
We know thee Lord of ample store, to thee have sent our hearts' desires: be therefore our Protector thou.
1.81.8

एतेete तta इन्द्रindra जन्तवोjantavo विश्वंviśvaṃ पुष्यन्तिpuṣyanti वार्यमvāryam |

अन्तर्हिantarhi खयोजनानामर्योkhyojanānāmaryo वेदोvedo अदाशुषांadāśuṣāṃ तेषांteṣāṃ नोno वेदveda आā भरbhara ||

These people, Indra, keep for thee all that is worthy of thy choice.
Discover thou, as Lord, the wealth of men who offer up no gifts: bring thou to us this wealth of theirs.
