HYMN CIII. INDRA.


आशुःāśuḥ शिशानोśiśāno वर्षभोvṛṣabho नna भीमोbhīmo घनाघनःghanāghanaḥ कषोभणश्चर्षणीनामkṣobhaṇaścarṣaṇīnām |

संक्रन्दनो.अनिमिषsaṃkrandano.animiṣa एकवीरःekavīraḥ शतंśataṃ सेनाजयतsenāajayat साकमिन्द्रःsākamindraḥ ||

SWIFT, rapidly striking, like a bull who sharpens his horns, terrific, stirring up the people,
With eyes that close not, bellowing, Sole Hero, Indra. subdued at once a hundred armies.
10.103.1

संक्रन्दनेनानिमिषेणsaṃkrandanenānimiṣeṇa जिष्णुनाjiṣṇunā युत्कारेणyutkāreṇa दुश्च्यवनेनध्र्ष्णुनाduścyavanenadhṛṣṇunā |

तदिन्द्रेणtadindreṇa जयतjayata ततtat सहध्वंsahadhvaṃ युधोyudho नरैषुहस्तेनnaraiṣuhastena वर्ष्णाvṛṣṇā ||

With him loud-roaring, ever watchful, Victor, bold, hard to overthrow, Rouser of battle,
Indra. the Strong, whose hand bears arrows, conquer, ye warriors, now, now vanquish in the combat.
10.103.2

सsa इषुहस्तैःiṣuhastaiḥ सsa निषङगिभिर्वशीniṣaṅghibhirvaśī संस्रष्टाsaṃsraṣṭā सsa युधैन्द्रोyudhaindro गणेनghaṇena |

संस्र्ष्टजितsaṃsṛṣṭajit सोमपाsomapā बाहुशर्ध्युग्रधन्वाप्रतिहिताभिरस्ताbāhuśardhyughradhanvāpratihitābhirastā ||

He rules with those who carry shafts and quivers, Indra who with his band rings hosts together,
Foe-conquering, strong of arm, the Soma-drinker, with mighty bow, shooting with well-laid arrows.
10.103.3

बर्हस्पतेbṛhaspate परिpari दीयाdīyā रथेनrathena रक्षोहामित्रानपबाधमानःrakṣohāmitrānapabādhamānaḥ |

परभञ्जनprabhañjan सेनाःsenāḥ परम्र्णोpramṛṇo युधाyudhā जयन्नस्माकमेध्यविताjayannasmākamedhyavitā रथानामrathānām ||

Bṛhaspati, fly with thy chariot hither, slayer of demons, driving off our foemen.
Be thou protector of our cars, destroyer, victor in battle, breaker-up of armies.
10.103.4

बलविज्ञायbalavijñāya सथविरःsthaviraḥ परवीरःpravīraḥ सहस्वानsahasvān वाजीvājī सहमानौग्रःsahamānaughraḥ |

अभिवीरोabhivīro अभिसत्वाabhisatvā सहोजाsahojā जैत्रमिन्द्रjaitramindra रथमातिष्ठrathamātiṣṭha गोवितghovit ||

Conspicuous by thy strength, firm, foremost fighter, mighty and fierce, victorious, all-subduing,
The Son of Conquest, passing men and heroes, kine-winner, mount thy conquering car, O Indra.
10.103.5

गोत्रभिदंghotrabhidaṃ गोविदंghovidaṃ वज्रबाहुंvajrabāhuṃ जयन्तमज्मjayantamajma परम्र्णन्तमोजसाpramṛṇantamojasā |

इमंimaṃ सजाताsajātā अनुanu वीरयध्वमिन्द्रंvīrayadhvamindraṃ सखायोsakhāyo अनुसंanusaṃ रभध्वमrabhadhvam ||

Cleaver of stalls, kine-winner, armed with thunder, who quells an army and with might destroys it.-
Follow him, brothers! quit yourselves like heroes, and like this Indra show your zeal and courage.
10.103.6

अभिabhi गोत्राणिghotrāṇi सहसाsahasā गाहमानो.अदयोghāhamāno.adayo वीरःvīraḥ शतमन्युरिन्द्रःśatamanyurindraḥ |

दुश्च्यवनःduścyavanaḥ पर्तनाषाळpṛtanāṣāḷ अयुध्यो.अस्माकंayudhyo.asmākaṃ सेनावतुsenāavatu परpra युत्सुyutsu ||

Piercing the cow-stalls with surpassing vigour, Indra, the pitiless Hero, wild with anger,
Victor in fight, unshaken and resistless,may he protect our armies in our battles.
10.103.7

इन्द्रindra आसांāsāṃ नेताnetā बर्हस्पतिर्दक्षिणाbṛhaspatirdakṣiṇā यज्ञःyajñaḥ पुरpura एतुसोमःetusomaḥ |

देवसेनानामभिभञ्जतीनांdevasenānāmabhibhañjatīnāṃ जयन्तीनांjayantīnāṃ मरुतोयन्त्वग्रमmarutoyantvaghram ||

Indra guide these: Bṛhaspati precede them, the guerdon, and the sacrifice, and Soma;
And let the banded Maruts march in forefront of heavenly hosts that conquer and demolish.
10.103.8

इन्द्रस्यindrasya वर्ष्णोvṛṣṇo वरुणस्यvaruṇasya राज्ञrājña आदित्यानांādityānāṃ मरुतांशर्धmarutāṃśardha उग्रमughram |

महामनसांmahāmanasāṃ भुवनच्यवानांbhuvanacyavānāṃ घोषोदेवानांghoṣodevānāṃ जयतामुदस्थातjayatāmudasthāt ||

Ours be the potent host of mighty Indra, King Varuṇa, and Maruts, and Ādityas.
Uplifted is the shout of Gods who conquer high-minded Gods who cause the worlds to tremble.
10.103.9

उदud धर्षयdharṣaya मघवन्नायुधान्युतmaghavannāyudhānyut सत्वनांsatvanāṃ मामकानाम्मनांसिmāmakānāmmanāṃsi |

उदud वर्त्रहनvṛtrahan वाजिनांvājināṃ वाजिनान्युदvājinānyud रथानांजयतांrathānāṃjayatāṃ यन्तुyantu घोषाःghoṣāḥ ||

Bristle thou up, O Maghavan, our weapons: excite the spirits of my warring heroes.
Urge on the strong steeds' might, O Vṛtra-slayer, and let the din of conquering cars go upward.
10.103.10

अस्माकमिन्द्रःasmākamindraḥ सम्र्तेषुsamṛteṣu धवजेष्वस्माकंdhvajeṣvasmākaṃ याyā इषवस्ताजयन्तुiṣavastājayantu |

अस्माकंasmākaṃ वीराvīrā उत्तरेuttare भवन्त्वस्मानुbhavantvasmānu देवाdevā अवताहवेषुavatāhaveṣu ||

May Indra aid us when our flags are gathered: victorious be the arrows of our army.
May our brave men of war prevail in battle. Ye Gods, protect us in the shout of onset.
10.103.11

अमीषांamīṣāṃ चित्तंcittaṃ परतिलोभयन्तीpratilobhayantī गर्हाणाङगान्यप्वेghṛhāṇāṅghānyapve परेहिparehi |

अभिabhi परेहिprehi निर्दहnirdaha हर्त्सुhṛtsu शोकैरन्धेनामित्रास्तमसासचन्तामśokairandhenāmitrāstamasāsacantām ||

Bewildering the senses of our foemen, seize thou their bodies and depart, O Apva.
Attack them, set their hearts on fire and burn them: so let our foes abide in utter darkness.
10.103.12

परेताpretā जयताjayatā नरnara इन्द्रोindro वःvaḥ शर्मśarma यछतुyachatu |

उग्राughrā वःvaḥ सन्तुबाहवो.अनाध्र्ष्याsantubāhavo.anādhṛṣyā यथासथyathāsatha ||

Advance, O heroes, win the day. May Indra be your sure defence.
Exceeding mighty be your arms, that none may wound or injure you.
