HYMN XLII. INDRA.


अस्तेवasteva सुsu परतरंprataraṃ लायमस्यनlāyamasyan भूषन्निवbhūṣanniva परpra भरास्तोममस्मैbharāstomamasmai |

वाचाvācā विप्रास्तरतviprāstarata वाचमर्योvācamaryo निni रामयजरितःrāmayajaritaḥ सोमsoma इन्द्रमindram ||

EVEN as an archer shoots afar his arrow, offer the laud to him with meet adornment.
Quell with your voice the wicked's voice, O sages. Singer, make Indra rest beside the Soma.
10.42.1

दोहेनdohena गामुपghāmupa शिक्षाśikṣā सखायंsakhāyaṃ परpra बोधयbodhaya जरितर्जारमिन्द्रमjaritarjāramindram |

कोशंkośaṃ नna पूर्णंpūrṇaṃ वसुनाvasunā नय्र्ष्टमाnyṛṣṭamā चयावयमघदेयायcyāvayamaghadeyāya शूरमśūram ||

Draw thy Friend to thee like a cow at milking: O Singer, wake up Indra as a lover.
Make thou the Hero haste to give us riches even as a vessel filled brimful with treasure.
10.42.2

किमङगkimaṅgha तवाtvā मघवनmaghavan भोजमाहुःbhojamāhuḥ शिशीहिśiśīhi माmā शिशयन्त्वाśiśayantvā शर्णोमिśṛṇomi |

अप्नस्वतीapnasvatī ममmama धीरस्तुdhīrastu शक्रśakra वसुविदम्भगमिन्द्राvasuvidambhaghamindrā भराbharā नःnaḥ ||

Why, Maghavan, do they call thee Bounteous; Giver? Quicken me: thou, I hear, art he who quickens.
Śakra, let my intelligence be active, and bring us luck that finds great wealth, O Indra.
10.42.3

तवांtvāṃ जनाjanā ममसत्येष्विन्द्रmamasatyeṣvindra सन्तस्थानाsantasthānā विvi हवयन्तेसमीकेhvayantesamīke |

अत्राatrā युजंyujaṃ कर्णुतेkṛṇute योyo हविष्मानhaviṣmān नासुन्वतासख्यंnāsunvatāsakhyaṃ वष्टिvaṣṭi शूरःśūraḥ ||

Standing, in battle for their rights, together, the people, Indra, in the fray invoke thee.
Him who brings gifts the Hero makes his comrade: with him who pours no juice he seeks not friendship.
10.42.4

धनंdhanaṃ नna सयन्द्रंsyandraṃ बहुलंbahulaṃ योyo अस्मैasmai तीव्रानtīvrān सोमानासुनोतिप्रयस्वानsomānāsunotiprayasvān |

तस्मैtasmai शत्रूनśatrūn सुतुकानsutukān परातरह्नोprātarahno निस्वष्ट्रानnisvaṣṭrān युवतिyuvati हन्तिhanti वर्त्रमvṛtram ||

Whoso with plenteous food for him expresses strong Somas as much quickly-coming treasure,
For him he overthrows in early morning his swift well-weaponed foes, and slays the tyrant.
10.42.5

यस्मिनyasmin वयंvayaṃ दधिमाdadhimā शंसमिन्द्रेśaṃsamindre यःyaḥ शिश्रायśiśrāya मघवाकाममस्मेmaghavākāmamasme |

आराच्चितārāccit सनsan भयतामस्यbhayatāmasya शत्रुर्न्यस्मैद्युम्नाśatrurnyasmaidyumnā जन्याjanyā नमन्तामnamantām ||

He unto whom we offer praises, Indra, Maghavan, who hath joined to ours his wishes,—
Before him even afar the foe must tremble: low before him must bow all human glories.
10.42.6

आराच्छत्रुमपārācchatrumapa बाधस्वbādhasva दूरमुग्रोdūramughro यःyaḥ शम्बःपुरुहूतśambaḥpuruhūta तेनtena |

अस्मेasme धेहिdhehi यवमदyavamad गोमदिन्द्रghomadindra कर्धीkṛdhī धियंजरित्रेdhiyaṃjaritre वाजरत्नामvājaratnām ||

With thy fierce bolt, O God invoked of many, drive to a distance from afar the foeman.
O Indra, give us wealth in corn and cattle, and make thy singer's prayer gain strength and riches.
10.42.7

परpra यमन्तर्व्र्षसवासोyamantarvṛṣasavāso अग्मनaghman तीव्राःtīvrāḥ सोमाsomā बहुलान्तासैन्द्रमbahulāntāsaindram |

नाहnāha दामानंdāmānaṃ मघवाmaghavā निni यंसनyaṃsan निni सुन्वतेsunvate वहतिभूरिvahatibhūri वाममvāmam ||

Indra, the swallower of strong libations rich in the boons they bring, the potent Somas,
He, Maghavan, will not restrict his bounty he brings much wealth unto the Soma-presser.
10.42.8

उतuta परहामतिदीव्याprahāmatidīvyā जयातिjayāti कर्तंkṛtaṃ यच्छ्वघ्नीyacchvaghnī विचिनोतिकालेvicinotikāle |

योyo देवकामोdevakāmo नna धनाdhanā रुणद्धिruṇaddhi समितsamit तंtaṃ रायास्र्जतिrāyāsṛjati सवधावानsvadhāvān ||

Yea, by superior play he wins advantage, when he, a gambler, piles his gains in season.
Celestial-natured, he o’erwhelms with riches the devotee who keeps not back his treasure.
10.42.9

गोभिषghobhiṣ टरेमामतिंṭaremāmatiṃ दुरेवांdurevāṃ यवेनyavena कषुधंkṣudhaṃ पुरुहूतविश्वामpuruhūtaviśvām |

वयंvayaṃ राजभिःrājabhiḥ परथमाprathamā धनान्यस्माकेनव्र्जनेनाdhanānyasmākenavṛjanenā जयेमjayema ||

O Much-invoked, may we subdue all famine and evil want with store of grain and cattle.
May we allied, as first in rank, with princes obtain possessions by our own exertion.
10.42.10

बर्हस्पतिर्नःbṛhaspatirnaḥ परिpari पातुpātu पश्चादुतोत्तरस्मादधरादघायोःpaścādutottarasmādadharādaghāyoḥ |

इद्रःidraḥ पुरस्तादुतpurastāduta मध्यतोmadhyato नःnaḥ सखाsakhā सखिभ्योवरिवःsakhibhyovarivaḥ कर्णोतुkṛṇotu ||

Bṛhaspati protect us from the rearward, and from above, and from below, from sinners!
May Indra from the front, and from the centre, as Friend to friends, vouchsafe us room and freedom.
