HYMN XLV. AGNI.


दिवसdivas परिpari परथमंprathamaṃ जज्ञेjajñe अग्निरस्मदaghnirasmad दवितीयंdvitīyaṃ परिजातवेदाःparijātavedāḥ |

तर्तीयमप्सुtṛtīyamapsu नर्मणाnṛmaṇā अजस्रमिन्धानajasramindhāna एनंजरतेenaṃjarate सवाधीःsvādhīḥ ||

FIRST Agni sprang to life from out of Heaven: the second time from us came Jātavedas.
Thirdly the Manly-souled was in the waters. The pious lauds and kindles him the Eternal.
10.45.1

विद्माvidmā तेte अग्नेaghne तरेधाtredhā तरयाणिtrayāṇi विद्माvidmā तेte धामdhāma विभ्र्तापुरुत्राvibhṛtāpurutrā |

विद्माvidmā तेte नामnāma परमंparamaṃ गुहाghuhā यदyad विद्माvidmā तमुत्संtamutsaṃ यतyata आजगन्थājaghantha ||

Agni, we know thy three powers in three stations, we know thy forms in many a place divided.
We know what name supreme thou hast in secret: we know the source from which thou hast proceeded.
10.45.2

समुद्रेsamudre तवाtvā नर्मणाnṛmaṇā अप्स्वन्तर्न्र्चक्षाapsvantarnṛcakṣā ईधेīdhe दिवोdivo अग्नूधनaghnaūdhan |

तर्तीयेtṛtīye तवाtvā रजसिrajasi तस्थिवांसमपामुपस्थेमहिषाtasthivāṃsamapāmupasthemahiṣā अवर्धनavardhan ||

The Manly-souled lit thee in sea and waters, man's Viewer lit thee in the breast of heaven,
There as thou stoodest in the third high region the Steers increased thee in the water's bosom.
10.45.3

अक्रन्ददग्निakrandadaghni सतनयन्निवstanayanniva दयौःdyauḥ कषामाkṣāmā रेरिहदrerihad वीरुधःसमञ्जनvīrudhaḥsamañjan |

सद्योsadyo जज्ञानोjajñāno विvi हीमिद्धोhīmiddho अख्यदाakhyadā रोदसीभानुनाrodasībhānunā भात्यन्तःbhātyantaḥ ||

Agni roared out, like Dyaus what time he thunders: he licked the ground about the plants he flickered.
At once, when born, he looked around enkindled, and lightened heaven and earth within with splendour.
10.45.4

शरीणामुदारोśrīṇāmudāro धरुणोdharuṇo रयीणांrayīṇāṃ मनीषाणाम्प्रार्पणःmanīṣāṇāmprārpaṇaḥ सोमगोपाःsomaghopāḥ |

वसुःvasuḥ सूनुःsūnuḥ सहसोsahaso अप्सुapsu राजाविrājāvi भात्यग्रbhātyaghra उषसामिधानःuṣasāmidhānaḥ ||

The spring of glories and support of riches, rouser of thoughts and guardian of the Soma,
Good Son of Strength, a King amid the waters, in forefront of the Dawns he shines enkindled.
10.45.5

विश्वस्यviśvasya केतुर्भुवनस्यketurbhuvanasya गर्भgharbha आā रोदसीrodasī अप्र्णाज्जायमानःapṛṇājjāyamānaḥ |

वीळुंvīḷuṃ चिदद्रिमभिनतcidadrimabhinat परायञparāyañ जनाjanā यदग्निमयजन्तyadaghnimayajanta पञ्चpañca ||

Germ of the world, ensign of all creation, be sprang to life and filled the earth and heavens.
Even the firm rock he cleft when passing over, when the Five Tribes brought sacrifice to Agni.
10.45.6

उशिकuśik पावकोpāvako अरतिःaratiḥ सुमेधाsumedhā मर्तेष्वग्निरम्र्तोmarteṣvaghniramṛto निni धायिdhāyi |

इयर्तिiyarti धूममरुषंdhūmamaruṣaṃ भरिभ्रदुच्छुक्रेणbharibhraducchukreṇa शोचिषाद्याśociṣādyā इनक्षनinakṣan ||

So among mortals was Immortal Agni stablished as holy wise and willing envoy.
He waves the red smoke that he lifts above him, striving to reach the heavens with radiant lustre.
10.45.7

दर्शानोdṛśāno रुक्मrukma उर्वियाurviyā वयद्यौदvyadyaud दुर्मर्षमायुःdurmarṣamāyuḥ शरियेरुचानःśriyerucānaḥ |

अग्निरम्र्तोaghniramṛto अभवदabhavad वयोभिर्यदेनंvayobhiryadenaṃ दयौर्जनयतdyaurjanayat सुरेताःsuretāḥ ||

Like gold to look on, far he shone refulgent, beaming imperishable life for glory,
Agni by vital powers became immortal when his prolific Father Dyaus begat him.
10.45.8

यस्तेyaste अद्यadya कर्णवदkṛṇavad भद्रशोचे.अपूपंbhadraśoce.apūpaṃ देवdeva घर्तवन्तमग्नेghṛtavantamaghne |

परpra तंtaṃ नयnaya परतरंprataraṃ वस्योvasyo अछाभिachābhi सुम्नंsumnaṃ देवभक्तंयविष्ठdevabhaktaṃyaviṣṭha ||

Whoso this day, O God whose flames are lovely, prepares a cake, O Agni, mixt with butter,
Lead thou and further him to higher fortune, to bliss bestowed by Gods, O thou Most Youthful.
10.45.9

आā तंtaṃ भजbhaja सौश्रवसेष्वग्नsauśravaseṣvaghna उक्थौक्थukthauktha आā भजbhaja शस्यमानेśasyamāne |

परियःpriyaḥ सूर्येsūrye परियोpriyo अग्नाaghnā भवात्युज्जातेनbhavātyujjātena भिनददुज्जनित्वैःbhinadadujjanitvaiḥ ||

Endow him, Agni, with a share of glory, at every song of praise sung forth enrich him.
Dear let him be to Sūrya, dear to Agni, preeminent with son and children's children.
10.45.10

तवामग्नेtvāmaghne यजमानाyajamānā अनुanu दयूनdyūn विश्वाviśvā वसुvasu दधिरेdadhire वार्याणिvāryāṇi |

तवयाtvayā सहsaha दरविणमिछमानाdraviṇamichamānā वरजंvrajaṃ गोमन्तमुशिजोghomantamuśijo विवव्रुःvivavruḥ ||

While, Agni, day by day men pay thee worship they win themselves all treasures worth the wishing.
Allied with thee, eager and craving riches, they have disclosed the stable filled with cattle.
10.45.11

अस्ताव्यग्निर्नरांastāvyaghnirnarāṃ सुशेवोsuśevo वैश्वानरvaiśvānara रषिभिःसोमगोपाःṛṣibhiḥsomaghopāḥ |

अद्वेषेadveṣe दयावाप्र्थिवीdyāvāpṛthivī हुवेमhuvema देवाdevā धत्तdhatta रयिमस्मेrayimasme सुवीरमsuvīram ||

Agni, the Friend of men, the Soma's keeper, Vaiśvānara, hath been lauded by the Ṛṣis.
We will invoke benignant Earth and Heaven: ye Deities, give us wealth with hero children.
