HYMN LXXXVI. INDRA.


विvi हिhi सोतोरस्र्क्षतsotorasṛkṣata नेन्द्रंnendraṃ देवममंसतdevamamaṃsata |

यत्रामदद्व्र्षाकपिरर्यःyatrāmadadvṛṣākapiraryaḥ पुष्टेषुpuṣṭeṣu मत्सखाmatsakhā विश्वस्मादिन्द्रौत्तरःviśvasmādindrauttaraḥ ||

MEN have abstained from pouring juice they count not Indra as a God.
Where at the votary's store my friend Vrsakapi hath drunk his fill. Supreme is Indra over all.
10.86.1

पराparā हीन्द्रhīndra धावसिdhāvasi वर्षाकपेरतिvṛṣākaperati वयथिःvyathiḥ |

नोno अहaha परविन्दस्यन्यत्रpravindasyanyatra सोमपीतयेsomapītaye विश्वस्मादिन्द्रviśvasmādindra उत्तरःuttaraḥ ||

Thou, Indra, heedless passest by the ill Vrsakapi hath wrought;
Yet nowhere else thou findest place wherein to drink the Soma juice. Supreme is Indra over all.
10.86.2

किमयंkimayaṃ तवांtvāṃ वर्षाकपिश्चकारvṛṣākapiścakāra हरितोharito मर्गःmṛghaḥ |

यस्मािरस्यसीदुyasmāirasyasīdu नवर्योnvaryo वाvā पुष्टिमदpuṣṭimad वसुvasu विश्वस्मादिन्द्रौत्तरःviśvasmādindrauttaraḥ ||

What hath he done to injure thee, this tawny beast Vrsakapi,
With whom thou art so angry now? What is the votary's foodful store? Supreme is Indra over all.
10.86.3

यमिमंyamimaṃ तवंtvaṃ वर्षाकपिंvṛṣākapiṃ परियमिन्द्राभिरक्षसिpriyamindrābhirakṣasi |

शवाśvā नवस्यnvasya जम्भिसअदपिjambhisadapi कर्णेkarṇe वरहयुर्विश्वस्मदिन्द्रvarahayurviśvasmadindra उत्तरःuttaraḥ ||

Soon may the hound who hunts the boar seize him and bite him in the car,
O Indra, that Vrsakapi whom thou protectest as a friend, Supreme is Indra over all.
10.86.4

परियाpriyā तष्टानिtaṣṭāni मेme कपिर्व्यक्ताkapirvyaktā वयदूदुषतvyadūduṣat |

शिरोśiro नवस्यnvasya राविषंrāviṣaṃ नna सुगंsughaṃ दुष्क्र्तेduṣkṛte भुवंbhuvaṃ विश्वस्मादिन्द्रौत्तरःviśvasmādindrauttaraḥ ||

Kapi hath marred the beauteous things, all deftly wrought, that were my joy.
In pieces will I rend his head; the sinner's portion sball be woo. Supreme is Indra over all.
10.86.5

नna मतmat सत्रीstrī सुभसत्तराsubhasattarā नna सुयाशुतराsuyāśutarā भुवतbhuvat |

नna मत्प्रतिच्यवीयसीmatpraticyavīyasī नna सक्थ्युद्यमीयसीsakthyudyamīyasī विश्वस्मादिन्द्रौत्तरःviśvasmādindrauttaraḥ ||

No Dame hath ampler charms than 1, or greater wealth of love's delights.
None with more ardour offers all her beauty to her lord's embrace. Supreme is Indra over all.
10.86.6

उवेuve अम्बamba सुलाभिकेsulābhike यथेवाङगyathevāṅgha भविष्यतिbhaviṣyati |

भसनbhasan मेme अम्बसक्थिambasakthi मेme शिरोśiro मेme वीवvīva हर्ष्यतिhṛṣyati विश्वस्मादिन्द्रviśvasmādindra उत्तरःuttaraḥ ||

Mother whose love is quickly wibn, I say what verily will be.
My,breast, O Mother, and my head and both my hips seem quivering. Supreme is Indra over all.
10.86.7

किंkiṃ सुबाहोsubāho सवङगुरेsvaṅghure पर्थुष्टोpṛthuṣṭo पर्थुजाघनेpṛthujāghane |

किंkiṃ शूरपत्निनस्त्वमभ्यमीषिśūrapatninastvamabhyamīṣi वर्षाकपिंvṛṣākapiṃ विश्वस्मादिन्द्रviśvasmādindra उत्तरःuttaraḥ ||

Dame with the lovely hands and arms, with broad hair-plaits add ample hips,
Why, O thou Hero's wife, art thou angry with our Vrsakapi? Supreme is Indra over all.
10.86.8

अवीरामिवavīrāmiva मामयंmāmayaṃ शरारुरभिśarārurabhi मन्यतेmanyate |

उताहमस्मिवीरिणीन्द्रपत्नीutāhamasmivīriṇīndrapatnī मरुत्सखाmarutsakhā विश्वस्मादिन्द्रviśvasmādindra उत्तरःuttaraḥ ||

This noxious creature looks on me as one bereft of hero's love,
Yet Heroes for my sons have I, the Maruts’ Friend and Indra's Queen. Supreme is Indra over all.
10.86.9

संहोत्रंsaṃhotraṃ समsma पुराpurā नारीnārī समनंsamanaṃ वावvāva गछतिghachati |

वेधार्तस्यvedhāṛtasya वीरिणीन्द्रपत्नीvīriṇīndrapatnī महीयतेmahīyate विश्वस्मादिन्द्रviśvasmādindra उत्तरःuttaraḥ ||

From olden time the matron goes to feast and general sacrifice.
Mother of Heroes, Indra's Queen, the rite's ordainer is extolled. Supreme is Indra over all.
10.86.10

इन्द्राणीमासुindrāṇīmāsu नारिषुnāriṣu सुभगामहमश्रवमsubhaghāmahamaśravam |

नह्यस्यापरंnahyasyāaparaṃ चनcana जरसाjarasā मरतेmarate पतिर्विश्वस्मादिन्द्रpatirviśvasmādindra उत्तरःuttaraḥ ||

So have I heard Indrāṇī called most fortunate among these Dames,
For never shall her Consort die in future time through length of days. Supreme is Indra overall.
10.86.11

नाहमिन्द्राणिnāhamindrāṇi रारणrāraṇa सख्युर्व्र्षाकपेरतेsakhyurvṛṣākaperte |

यस्येदमप्यंyasyedamapyaṃ हविःhaviḥ परियंpriyaṃ देवेषुdeveṣu गछतिghachati विश्वस्मादिन्द्रौत्तरःviśvasmādindrauttaraḥ ||

Never, Indralni, have I joyed without my friend Vrsakapi,
Whose welcome offering here, made pure with water, goeth to the Gods. Supreme is Indra over all.
10.86.12

वर्षाकपायिvṛṣākapāyi रेवतिrevati सूपुत्रsūputra आदुādu सुस्नुषेsusnuṣe |

घसतghasat तta इन्द्रौक्षणःindraukṣaṇaḥ परियंpriyaṃ काचित्करंkācitkaraṃ हविर्विश्वस्मादिन्द्रौत्तरःhavirviśvasmādindrauttaraḥ ||

Wealthy Vrsakapayi, blest with sons and consorts of thy sons,
Indra will eat thy bulls, thy dear oblation that effecteth much. Supreme is Indra over all.
10.86.13

उक्ष्णोukṣṇo हिhi मेme पञ्चदशpañcadaśa साकंsākaṃ पचन्तिpacanti विंशतिमviṃśatim |

उताहमद्मिutāhamadmi पीवpīva इदुभाidubhā कुक्षीkukṣī पर्णन्तिpṛṇanti मेme विश्वस्मादिन्द्रौत्तरःviśvasmādindrauttaraḥ ||

Fifteen in number, then, for me a score of bullocks they prepare,
And I devour the fat thereof: they fill my belly full with food. Supreme is Indra over all.
10.86.14

वर्षभोvṛṣabho नna तिग्मश्र्ङगो.अन्तर्यूथेषुtighmaśṛṅgho.antaryūtheṣu रोरुवतroruvat |

मन्थस्तैन्द्रmanthastaindra शंśaṃ हर्देhṛde यंyaṃ तेte सुनोतिsunoti भावयुर्विश्वस्मादिन्द्रौत्तरःbhāvayurviśvasmādindrauttaraḥ ||

Like as a bull with pointed horn, loud bellowing amid the herds,
Sweet to thine heart, O Indra, is the brew which she who tends thee pours. Supreme is Indra over all.
10.86.15

नna सेशेseśe यस्यyasya रम्बते.अन्तराrambate.antarā सक्थ्याsakthyā कप्र्तkapṛt |

सेदीशेयस्यsedīśeyasya रोमशंromaśaṃ निषेदुषोniṣeduṣo विज्र्म्भतेvijṛmbhate विश्वस्मादिन्द्रौत्तरःviśvasmādindrauttaraḥ ||

He who is impotent, deserves no progeny, but he whose endowment can reach the depths of the womb.
Supreme Indra is above all.
10.86.16

नna सेशेseśe यस्यyasya रोमशंromaśaṃ निषेदुषोniṣeduṣo विज्र्म्भतेvijṛmbhate |

सेदीशेयस्यsedīśeyasya रम्बते.अन्तराrambate.antarā सक्थ्याsakthyā कप्र्दkapṛd विश्वस्मादिन्द्रौत्तरःviśvasmādindrauttaraḥ ||

He who is impotent deserves no progeny, but he whose endowment can reach the depths of the womb.
Supreme Indra is above all!
10.86.17

अयमिन्द्रayamindra वर्षाकपिःvṛṣākapiḥ परस्वन्तंparasvantaṃ हतंhataṃ विदतvidat |

असिंसूनांasiṃsūnāṃ नवंnavaṃ चरुमादेधस्यानcarumādedhasyāna आचितंācitaṃ विश्वस्मादिन्द्रviśvasmādindra उत्तरःuttaraḥ ||

O Indra this Vrsakapi hath found a slain wild animal,
Dresser, and new-made pan, and knife, and wagon with a load of wood. Supreme is Indra over all.
10.86.18

अयमेमिayamemi विचाकशदvicākaśad विचिन्वनvicinvan दासमार्यमdāsamāryam |

पिबामिपाकसुत्वनो.अभिpibāmipākasutvano.abhi धीरमचाकशंdhīramacākaśaṃ विश्वस्मादिन्द्रviśvasmādindra उत्तरःuttaraḥ ||

Distinguishing the Dāsa and the Ārya, viewing all, I go.
I look upon the wise, and drink the simple votary's Soma juice. Supreme is Indra over all.
10.86.19

धन्वdhanva चca यतyat कर्न्तत्रंkṛntatraṃ चca कतिkati सवितsvit ताtā विvi योजनाyojanā |

नेदीयासोnedīyāso वर्षाकपे.अस्तमेहिvṛṣākape.astamehi गर्हानुपghṛhānupa विश्वस्मादिन्द्रौत्तरहviśvasmādindrauttarah ||

The desert plains and steep descents, how many leagues in length they spread!
Go to the nearest houses, go unto thine home, Vrsakapi. Supreme is Indra over all.
10.86.20

पुनरेहिpunarehi वर्षाकपेvṛṣākape सुविताsuvitā कल्पयावहैkalpayāvahai |

यya एषस्वप्ननंशनो.अस्तमेषिeṣasvapnanaṃśano.astameṣi पथpatha पुनर्विश्वस्मादिन्द्रौत्तरःpunarviśvasmādindrauttaraḥ ||

Turn thee again Vrsakapi: we twain will bring thee happiness.
Thou goest homeward on thy way along this path which leads to sleep. Supreme is Indra over all.
10.86.21

यदुदञ्चोyadudañco वर्षाकपेvṛṣākape गर्हमिन्द्राजगन्तनghṛhamindrājaghantana |

कवkva सयsya पुल्वघोम्र्गःpulvaghomṛghaḥ कमगञkamaghañ जनयोपनोjanayopano विश्वस्मादिन्द्रviśvasmādindra उत्तरःuttaraḥ ||

When, Indra and Vrsakapi, ye travelled upward to your home,
Where was that noisome beast, to whom went it, the beast that troubles man? Supreme is Indra over all.
10.86.22

पर्शुर्हparśurha नामnāma मानविmānavi साकंsākaṃ ससूवsasūva विंशviṃśa तिमtim |

भद्रम्भलbhadrambhala तयस्याtyasyā अभूदabhūd यस्याyasyā उदरममयदudaramamayad विश्वस्मादिन्द्रौत्तरःviśvasmādindrauttaraḥ ||

Daughter of Manu, Parsu bare a score of children at a birth.
Her portion verily was bliss although her burthen caused her grief.
