HYMN XCVII. PRAISE OF HERBS.


याyā ओषधीःoṣadhīḥ पूर्वाpūrvā जाताjātā देवेभ्यस्त्रियुगंdevebhyastriyughaṃ पुराpurā |

मनैनुmanainu बभ्रूणामहंbabhrūṇāmahaṃ शतंśataṃ धामानिdhāmāni सप्तsapta चca ||

HERBS that sprang up in time of old, three ages earlier than the Gods,—
Of these, whose hue is brown, will I declare the hundred powers and seven.
10.97.1

शतंśataṃ वोvo अम्बamba धामानिdhāmāni सहस्रमुतsahasramuta वोvo रुहःruhaḥ |

अधाशतक्रत्वोadhāśatakratvo यूयमिमंyūyamimaṃ मेme अगदंaghadaṃ कर्तkṛta ||

Ye, Mothers, have a hundred homes, yea, and a thousand are your growths.
Do ye who have a thousand powers free this my patient from disease.
10.97.2

ओषधीःoṣadhīḥ परतिprati मोदध्वंmodadhvaṃ पुष्पवतीःpuṣpavatīḥ परसूवरीःprasūvarīḥ |

अश्वािवaśvāiva सजित्वरीर्वीरुधःsajitvarīrvīrudhaḥ पारयिष्ण्वःpārayiṣṇvaḥ ||

Be glad and joyful in the Plants, both blossoming and bearing fruit,
Plants that will lead us to success like mares who conquer in the race.
10.97.3

ओषधीरितिoṣadhīriti मातरस्तदmātarastad वोvo देवीरुपdevīrupa बरुवेbruve |

सनेयमश्वंगांsaneyamaśvaṃghāṃ वासvāsa आत्मानंātmānaṃ तवtava पूरुषpūruṣa ||

Plants, by this name I speak to you, Mothers, to you the Goddesses:
Steed, cow, and garment may I win, win back thy very self, O man.
10.97.4

अश्वत्थेaśvatthe वोvo निषदनंniṣadanaṃ पर्णेparṇe वोvo वसतिषvasatiṣ कर्ताkṛtā |

गोभाजghobhāja इत्किलासथitkilāsatha यतyat सनवथsanavatha पूरुषमpūruṣam ||

The Holy Fig tree is your home, your mansion is the Parna tree:
Winners of cattle shali ye be if ye regain for me this man.
10.97.5

यत्रौषधीःyatrauṣadhīḥ समग्मतsamaghmata राजानःrājānaḥ समिताविवsamitāviva |

विप्रःvipraḥ सौच्यतेsaucyate भिषगbhiṣagh रक्षोहामीवचातनःrakṣohāmīvacātanaḥ ||

He who hath store of Herbs at hand like Kings amid a crowd of men,—
Physician is that sage's name, fiend-slayer, chaser of disease.
10.97.6

अश्वावतींaśvāvatīṃ सोमावतीमूर्जयन्तीमुदोजसमsomāvatīmūrjayantīmudojasam |

आवित्सिसर्वाāvitsisarvā ओषधीरस्माoṣadhīrasmā अरिष्टतातयेariṣṭatātaye ||

Herbs rich in Soma, rich in steeds, in nourishments, in strengthening power,—
All these have I provided here, that this man may be whole again.
10.97.7

उच्छुष्माucchuṣmā ओषधीनांoṣadhīnāṃ गावोghāvo गोष्ठादिवेरतेghoṣṭhādiverate |

धनंसनिष्यन्तीनामात्मानंdhanaṃsaniṣyantīnāmātmānaṃ तवtava पूरुषpūruṣa ||

The healing virtues of the Plants stream forth like cattle from the stall,—
Plants that shall win me store of wealth, and save thy vital breath, O man.
10.97.8

इष्क्र्तिर्नामiṣkṛtirnāma वोvo माताथोmātātho यूयंyūyaṃ सथstha निष्क्र्तीःniṣkṛtīḥ |

सीराःपतत्र्णीsīrāḥpatatṛṇī सथनsthana यदामयतिyadāmayati निषniṣ कर्थkṛtha ||

Reliever is your mother's name, and hence Restorers are ye called.
Rivers are ye with wings that fly: keep far whatever brings disease.
10.97.9

अतिati विश्वाःviśvāḥ परिष्ठाpariṣṭhā सतेनstena इवiva वरजमक्रमुःvrajamakramuḥ |

ओषधीःप्राचुच्यवुर्यतoṣadhīḥprācucyavuryat किंkiṃ चca तन्वोtanvo रपःrapaḥ ||

Over all fences have they passed, as steals a thief into the fold.
The Plants have driven from the frame whatever malady was there.
10.97.10

यदिमाyadimā वाजयन्नहमोषधीर्हस्तvājayannahamoṣadhīrhasta आदधेādadhe |

आत्मायक्ष्मस्यātmāyakṣmasya नश्यतिnaśyati पुराpurā जीवग्र्भोjīvaghṛbho यथाyathā ||

When, bringing back the vanished strength, I hold these herbs within my hand,
The spirit of disease departs ere he can seize upon the life.
10.97.11

यस्यौषधीःyasyauṣadhīḥ परसर्पथाङगम-अञ्गंprasarpathāṅgham-añghaṃ परुष-परुःparuṣ-paruḥ |

ततोयक्ष्मंtatoyakṣmaṃ विvi बाधध्वbādhadhva उग्रोughro मध्यमशीरिवmadhyamaśīriva ||

He through whose frame, O Plants, ye creep member by member, joint by joint,—
From him ye drive away disease like some strong arbiter of strife.
10.97.12

साकंsākaṃ यक्ष्मyakṣma परpra पतpata चाषेणcāṣeṇa किकिदीविनाkikidīvinā |

साकंवातस्यsākaṃvātasya धराज्याdhrājyā साकंsākaṃ नश्यnaśya निहाकयाnihākayā ||

Fly, Spirit of Disease, begone, with the blue jay and kingfisher.
Fly with the wind's impetuousspeed, vanish together with the storm.
10.97.13

अन्याanyā वोvo अन्यामवत्वन्यान्यस्याanyāmavatvanyānyasyā उपावतupāvata |

ताःtāḥ सर्वाःसंविदानाsarvāḥsaṃvidānā इदंidaṃ मेme परावताprāvatā वचःvacaḥ ||

Help every one the other, lend assistance each of you to each,
All of you be accordant, give furtherance to this speech of mine.
10.97.14

याःyāḥ फलिनीर्याphalinīryā अफलाaphalā अपुष्पाapuṣpā याश्चyāśca पुष्पिणीःpuṣpiṇīḥ |

बर्हस्पतिप्रसूतास्ताbṛhaspatiprasūtāstā नोno मुञ्चन्त्वंहसःmuñcantvaṃhasaḥ ||

Let fruitful Plants, and fruitless, those that blossom, and the blossomless,
Urged onward by Bṛhaspati, release us from our pain and grief;
10.97.15

मुञ्चन्तुmuñcantu माmā शपथ्यादथोśapathyādatho वरुण्यादुतvaruṇyāduta |

अथोatho यमस्यपड्बीशातyamasyapaḍbīśāt सर्वस्मादsarvasmād देवकिल्बिषातdevakilbiṣāt ||

Release me from the curse's plague and woe that comes from Varuṇa;
Free me from Yama's fetter, from sin and offence against the Gods.
10.97.16

अवपतन्तीरवदनavapatantīravadan दिवdiva ओषधयसoṣadhayas परिpari |

यंyaṃ जीवमश्नवामहैjīvamaśnavāmahai नna सsa रिष्यातिriṣyāti पूरुषःpūruṣaḥ ||

What time, descending from the sky, the Plants flew earthward, thus they spake:
No evil shall befall the man whom while he liveth we pervade,
10.97.17

याyā ओषधीःoṣadhīḥ सोमराज्ञीर्बह्वीःsomarājñīrbahvīḥ शतविचक्षणाःśatavicakṣaṇāḥ |

तासांtāsāṃ तवमस्युत्तमारंtvamasyuttamāraṃ कामायkāmāya शंśaṃ हर्देhṛde ||

Of all the many Plants whose King is, Soma, Plants of hundred forms,
Thou art the Plant most excellent, prompt to the wish, sweet to the heart.
10.97.18

याyā ओषधीःoṣadhīḥ सोमराज्ञीर्विष्ठिताःsomarājñīrviṣṭhitāḥ पर्थिवीमनुpṛthivīmanu |

बर्हस्पतिप्रसूताbṛhaspatiprasūtā अस्यैasyai संsaṃ दत्तdatta वीर्यमvīryam ||

O all ye various Herbs whose King is Soma, that o’erspread the earth,
Urged onward by Bṛhaspati, combine your virtue in this Plant.
10.97.19

माmā वोvo रिषतriṣat खनिताkhanitā यस्मैyasmai चाहंcāhaṃ खनामिkhanāmi वःvaḥ |

दविपच्चतुष्पदस्माकंdvipaccatuṣpadasmākaṃ सर्वमस्त्वनातुरमsarvamastvanāturam ||

Unharmed be he who digs you up, unharmed the man for whom I dig:
And let no malady attack biped or quadruped of ours.
10.97.20

याश्चेदमुपश्र्ण्वन्तिyāścedamupaśṛṇvanti याश्चyāśca दूरंdūraṃ परागताःparāghatāḥ |

सर्वाःsarvāḥ संगत्यsaṃghatya वीरुधो.अस्यैvīrudho.asyai संsaṃ दत्तdatta वीर्यमvīryam ||

All Plants that hear this speech, and those that have departed far away,
Come all assembled and confer your healing power upon this Herb.
10.97.21

ओषधयःoṣadhayaḥ संsaṃ वदन्तेvadante सोमेनsomena सहsaha राज्ञाrājñā |

यस्मैyasmai कर्णोतिब्राह्मणस्तंkṛṇotibrāhmaṇastaṃ राजनrājan पारयामसिpārayāmasi ||

With Soma as their Sovran Lord the Plants hold colloquy and say:
O King, we save from death the man whose cure a Brahman undertakes.
10.97.22

तवमुत्तमास्योषधेtvamuttamāsyoṣadhe तवtava वर्क्षाvṛkṣā उपस्तयःupastayaḥ |

उपस्तिरस्तुसो.अस्माकंupastirastuso.asmākaṃ योyo अस्मानभिदासतिasmānabhidāsati ||

Most excellent of all art thou, O Plant thy vassals are the trees.
Let him be subject to our power, the man who seeks to injure us.
