HYMN XII. INDRA.


योyo जातjāta एवeva परथमोprathamo मनस्वानmanasvān देवोdevo देवानdevān करतुनाkratunā पर्यभूषतparyabhūṣat |

यस्यyasya शुष्मादśuṣmād रोदसीrodasī अभ्यसेतांabhyasetāṃ नर्म्णस्यnṛmṇasya मह्नाmahnā सsa जनासjanāsa इन्द्रःindraḥ ||

HE who, just born, chief God of lofty spirit by power and might became the Gods’ protector,
Before whose breath through greatness of his valour the two worlds trembled, He, O men, is Indra.
2.12.1

यःyaḥ पर्थिवींpṛthivīṃ वयथमानामद्रंहदvyathamānāmadṛṃhad यःyaḥ पर्वतानparvatān परकुपितानरम्णातprakupitānaramṇāt |

योyo अन्तरिक्षंantarikṣaṃ विममेvimame वरीयोvarīyo योyo दयामस्तभ्नातdyāmastabhnāt सsa जनासjanāsa इन्द्रःindraḥ ||

He who fixed fast and firm the earth that staggered, and set at rest the agitated mountains,
Who measured out the air's wide middle region and gave the heaven support, He, men, is Indra.
2.12.2

योyo हत्वाहिमरिणातhatvāhimariṇāt सप्तsapta सिन्धूनsindhūn योyo गाghā उदाजदपधाudājadapadhā वलस्यvalasya |

योyo अश्मनोरन्तरग्निंaśmanorantaraghniṃ जजानjajāna संव्र्कsaṃvṛk समत्सुsamatsu स.s. ज.j. इ.i. ||

Who slew the Dragon, freed the Seven Rivers, and drove the kine forth from the cave of Vala,
Begat the fire between two stones, the spoiler in warriors’ battle, He, O men, is Indra.
2.12.3

येनेमाyenemā विश्वाviśvā चयवनाcyavanā कर्तानिkṛtāni योyo दासंdāsaṃ वर्णमधरंगुहाकःvarṇamadharaṃghuhākaḥ |

शवघ्नीवśvaghnīva योyo जिगीवानjighīvān लक्षमाददर्यःlakṣamādadaryaḥ पुष्टानिpuṣṭāni स.s. ज.j. इ.i. ||

By whom this universe was made to tremble, who chased away the humbled brood of demons,
Who, like a gambler gathering his winnings seized the foe's riches, He, O men, is Indra.
2.12.4

यंyaṃ समाsmā पर्छन्तिpṛchanti कुहkuha सेतिseti घोरमुतेमाहुर्नैषोghoramutemāhurnaiṣo अस्तीत्येनमastītyenam |

सोso अर्यःaryaḥ पुष्तीर्विजpuṣtīrvija इवाivā मिनातिmināti शरदस्मैśradasmai धत्तस.dhattas. ज.j. इ.i. ||

Of whom, the Terrible, they ask, Where is He? or verily they say of him, He is not.
He sweeps away, like birds, the foe's possessions. Have faith in him, for He, O men, is Indra.
2.12.5

योyo रध्रस्यradhrasya चोदिताcoditā यःyaḥ कर्शस्यkṛśasya योyo बरह्मणोbrahmaṇo नाधमानस्यकीरेःnādhamānasyakīreḥ |

युक्तग्राव्णोyuktaghrāvṇo यो.अविताyo.avitā सुशिप्रःsuśipraḥ सुतसोमस्यsutasomasya स.s. ज.j. इ.i. ||

Stirrer to action of the poor and lowly, of priest, of suppliant who sings his praises;
Who, fair-faced, favours him who presses Soma with stones made ready, He, O men, is Indra.
2.12.6

यस्याश्वासःyasyāśvāsaḥ परदिशिpradiśi यस्यyasya गावोghāvo यस्यyasya गरामाghrāmā यस्यyasya विश्वेviśve रथासःrathāsaḥ |

यःyaḥ सूर्यंsūryaṃ यya उषसंuṣasaṃ जजानjajāna योyo अपांapāṃ नेताnetā स.s. ज.j. इ.i. ||

He under whose supreme control are horses, all chariots, and the villages, and cattle;
He who gave being to the Sun and Morning, who leads the waters, He, O men, is Indra.
2.12.7

यंyaṃ करन्दसीkrandasī संयतीsaṃyatī विह्वयेतेvihvayete परे.अवरpare.avara उभयाubhayā अमित्राःamitrāḥ |

समानंsamānaṃ चिदcid रथमातस्थिवांसाrathamātasthivāṃsā नानाnānā हवेतेhavete स.s. ज.j. इ.i. ||

To whom two armies cry in close encounter, both enemies, the stronger and the weaker;
Whom two invoke upon one chariot mounted, each for himself, He, O ye men, is Indra.
2.12.8

यस्मानyasmān नna रतेṛte विजयन्तेvijayante जनासोjanāso यंyaṃ युध्यमानाyudhyamānā अवसेavase हवन्तेhavante |

योyo विश्वस्यviśvasya परतिमानंpratimānaṃ बभूवbabhūva योyo अच्युतच्युतacyutacyut स.s. ज.j. इ.i. ||

Without whose help our people never conquer; whom, battling, they invoke to give them succour;
He of whom all this world is but the copy, who shakes things moveless, He, O men, is Indra.
2.12.9

यःyaḥ शश्वतोśaśvato मह्येनोmahyeno दधानानमन्यमानाञ्छर्वाdadhānānamanyamānāñcharvā जघानjaghāna |

यःyaḥ शर्धतेśardhate नानुददातिnānudadāti शर्ध्यांśṛdhyāṃ योyo दस्योर्हन्तास.dasyorhantās. ज.j. इ.i. ||

He who hath smitten, ere they knew their danger, with his hurled weapon many grievous sinners;
Who pardons not his boldness who provokes him, who slays the Dasyu, He, O men, is Indra.
2.12.10

यःyaḥ शम्बरंśambaraṃ पर्वतेषुparvateṣu कषियन्तंkṣiyantaṃ चत्वारिंश्यांcatvāriṃśyāṃ शरद्यन्वविन्दतśaradyanvavindat |

ओजायमानंojāyamānaṃ योyo अहिंahiṃ जघानjaghāna दानुंdānuṃ शयानंस.śayānaṃs. ज.j. इ.i. ||

He who discovered in the fortieth autumn Śambara as he dwelt among the mountains;
Who slew the Dragon putting forth his vigour, the demon lying there, He, men, is Indra.
2.12.11

यःyaḥ सप्तरश्मिर्व्र्षभस्तुविष्मानवास्र्जतsaptaraśmirvṛṣabhastuviṣmānavāsṛjat सर्तवेsartave सप्तसिन्धूनsaptasindhūn |

योyo रौहिणमस्फुरदrauhiṇamasphurad वज्रबाहुर्द्यामारोहन्तंस.vajrabāhurdyāmārohantaṃs. ज.j. इ.i. ||

Who with seven guiding reins, the Bull, the Mighty, set free the Seven great Floods to flow at pleasure;
Who, thunder-armed, rent Rauhiṇa in pieces when scaling heaven, He, O ye men, is Indra.
2.12.12

दयावाdyāvā चिदस्मैcidasmai पर्थिवीpṛthivī नमेतेnamete शुष्माच्चिदस्यśuṣmāccidasya पर्वताparvatā भयन्तेbhayante |

यःyaḥ सोमपाsomapā निचितोnicito वज्रबाहुर्योvajrabāhuryo वज्रहस्तःvajrahastaḥ स.s. ज.j. इ.i. ||

Even the Heaven and Earth bow down before him, before his very breath the mountains tremble.
Known as the Soma-drinker, armed with thunder, who wields the bolt, He, O ye men, is Indra.
2.12.13

यःyaḥ सुन्वन्तमवतिsunvantamavati यःyaḥ पचन्तंpacantaṃ यःyaḥ शंसन्तंśaṃsantaṃ यःyaḥ शशमानमूतीśaśamānamūtī |

यस्यyasya बरह्मbrahma वर्धनंvardhanaṃ यस्यyasya सोमोsomo यस्येदंyasyedaṃ राधःrādhaḥ स.s. ज.j. इ.i. ||

Who aids with favour him who pours the Soma and him who brews it, sacrificer, singer.
Whom prayer exalts, and pouring forth of Soma, and this our gift, He, O ye men, Is Indra.
2.12.14

यःyaḥ सुन्वतेsunvate पचतेpacate दुध्रdudhra आā चिदcid वाजंvājaṃ दर्दर्षिdardarṣi सsa किलासिkilāsi सत्यःsatyaḥ |

वयंvayaṃ तta इन्द्रindra विश्वहviśvaha परियासःpriyāsaḥ सुवीरासोsuvīrāso विदथमाvidathamā वदेमvadema ||

Thou verily art fierce and true who sendest strength to the man who brews and pours libation.
So may we evermore, thy friends, O Indra, speak loudly to the synod with our heroes.
