HYMN XXX. INDRA.


इछन्तिichanti तवाtvā सोम्यासःsomyāsaḥ सखायःsakhāyaḥ सुन्वन्तिsunvanti सोमंsomaṃ दधतिdadhati परयांसिprayāṃsi |

तितिक्षन्तेtitikṣante अभिशस्तिंabhiśastiṃ जनानामिन्द्रjanānāmindra तवदाtvadā कश्चनkaścana हिhi परकेतःpraketaḥ ||

THE friends who offer Soma long to find thee: they pour forth Soma and present their viands.
They bear unmoved the cursing of the people, for all our wisdom comes from thee, O Indra.
3.30.1

नna तेte दूरेdūre परमाparamā चिदcid रजांस्याrajāṃsyā तुtu परpra याहिyāhi हरिवोharivo हरिभ्यामharibhyām |

सथिरायsthirāya वर्ष्णेvṛṣṇe सवनाsavanā कर्तेमाkṛtemā युक्ताyuktā गरावाणःghrāvāṇaḥ समिधानेsamidhāne अग्नौaghnau ||

Not far for thee are mid-air's loftiest regions: start hither, Lord of Bays, with thy Bay Horses.
Made for the Firm and Strong are these libations. The pressing-stones are set and fire is kindled.
3.30.2

इन्द्रःindraḥ सुशिप्रोsuśipro मघवाmaghavā तरुत्रोtarutro महाव्रातस्तुविकूर्मिर्र्घावानmahāvrātastuvikūrmirṛghāvān |

यदुग्रोyadughro धाdhā बाधितोbādhito मर्त्येषुmartyeṣu कवkva तयाtyā तेte वर्षभvṛṣabha वीर्याणिvīryāṇi ||

Fair cheeks hath Indra, Maghavan, the Victor, Lord of a great host, Stormer, strong in action.
What once thou didst in might when mortals vexed thee,—where now, O Bull, are those thy hero exploits?
3.30.3

तवंtvaṃ हिhi षमाṣmā चयावयन्नच्युतान्येकोcyāvayannacyutānyeko वर्त्राvṛtrā चरसिcarasi जिघ्नमानःjighnamānaḥ |

तवtava दयावाप्र्थिवीdyāvāpṛthivī पर्वतासो.अनुparvatāso.anu वरतायvratāya निमितेवnimiteva तस्थुःtasthuḥ ||

For, overthrowing what hath ne’er been shaken, thou goest forth alone destroying Vṛtras.
For him who followeth thy Law the mountains and heaven and earth stand as if firmly stablished.
3.30.4

उताभयेutābhaye पुरुहूतpuruhūta शरवोभिरेकोśravobhireko दर्ळ्हमवदोdṛḷhamavado वर्त्रहाvṛtrahā सनsan |

इमेime चिदिन्द्रcidindra रोदसीrodasī अपारेapāre यतyat संग्र्भ्णाsaṃghṛbhṇā मघवनmaghavan काशिरितkāśirit तेte ||

Yea, Much-invoked! in safety through thy glories alone thou speakest truth as Vṛtra's slayer.
E’en these two boundless worlds to thee, O Indra, what time thou graspest them, are but a handful.
3.30.5

परpra सूsū तta इन्द्रindra परवताpravatā हरिभ्यांharibhyāṃ परpra तेte वज्रःvajraḥ परम्र्णन्नेतुpramṛṇannetu शत्रूनśatrūn |

जहिjahi परतीचोpratīco अनूचःanūcaḥ पराचोparāco विश्वंviśvaṃ सत्यंक्र्णुहिsatyaṃkṛṇuhi विष्टमस्तुviṣṭamastu ||

Forthwith thy Bay steeds down the steep, O Indra, forth, crushing foemen, go thy bolt of thunder!
Slay those who meet thee, those who flee, who follow: make all thy promise true; be all completed.
3.30.6

यस्मैyasmai धायुरदधाdhāyuradadhā मर्त्यायाभक्तंmartyāyābhaktaṃ चिदcid भजतेbhajate गेह्यंghehyaṃ सःsaḥ |

भद्राbhadrā तta इन्द्रindra सुमतिर्घ्र्ताचीsumatirghṛtācī सहस्रदानाsahasradānā पुरुहूतpuruhūta रातिःrātiḥ ||

The man to whom thou givest as Provider enjoys domestic plenty undivided.
Blest, Indra, is thy favour dropping fatness: thy worship, Much-invoked! brings gifts in thousands.
3.30.7

सहदानुंsahadānuṃ पुरुहूतpuruhūta कषियन्तमहस्तमिन्द्रkṣiyantamahastamindra संsaṃ पिणकpiṇak कुणारुमkuṇārum |

अभिabhi वर्त्रंvṛtraṃ वर्धमानंvardhamānaṃ पियारुमपादमिन्द्रpiyārumapādamindra तवसाtavasā जघन्थjaghantha ||

Thou, Indra, Much-invoked! didst crush to pieces Kunaru handless fiend who dwelt with Danu.
Thou with might, Indra, smotest dead the scorner, the footless Vṛtra as he waxed in vigour.
3.30.8

निni सामनामिषिरामिन्द्रsāmanāmiṣirāmindra भूमिंbhūmiṃ महीमपारांmahīmapārāṃ सदनेsadane ससत्थsasattha |

अस्तभ्नादastabhnād दयांdyāṃ वर्षभोvṛṣabho अन्तरिक्षमर्षन्त्वापस्त्वयेहantarikṣamarṣantvāpastvayeha परसूताःprasūtāḥ ||

Thou hast established in her seat, O Indra, the level earth, vast, vigorous, unbounded.
The Bull hath propped the heaven and air's mid-region. By thee sent onward let the floods flow hither.
3.30.9

अलात्र्णोalātṛṇo वलvala इन्द्रindra वरजोvrajo गोःghoḥ पुराpurā हन्तोर्भयमानोhantorbhayamāno वयारvyāra |

सुगानsughān पथोpatho अक्र्णोनakṛṇon निरजेniraje गाःghāḥ परावनprāvan वाणीःvāṇīḥ पुरुहूतंpuruhūtaṃ धमन्तीःdhamantīḥ ||

He who withheld the kine, in silence I yielded in fear before thy blow, O Indra.
He made paths easy to drive forth the cattle. Loud-breathing praises helped the Much-invoked One.
3.30.10

एकोeko दवेdve वसुमतीvasumatī समीचीsamīcī इन्द्रindra आā पप्रौpaprau पर्थिवीमुतpṛthivīmuta दयामdyām |

उतान्तरिक्षादभिutāntarikṣādabhi नःnaḥ समीकsamīka इषोiṣo रथीःrathīḥ सयुजःsayujaḥ शूरśūra वाजानvājān ||

Indra alone filled full the earth and heaven, the Pair who meet together, rich in treasures.
Yea, bring thou near us from the air's mid-region strength, on thy car, and wholesome food, O Hero.
3.30.11

दिशःdiśaḥ सूर्योsūryo नna मिनातिmināti परदिष्टाpradiṣṭā दिवे-दिवेdive-dive हर्यश्वप्रसूताःharyaśvaprasūtāḥ |

संsaṃ यदानळyadānaḷ अध्वनadhvana आदिदश्वैर्विमोचनंādidaśvairvimocanaṃ कर्णुतेkṛṇute ततtat तवस्यtvasya ||

Sūrya transgresses not the ordered limits set daily by the Lord of Tawny Coursers.
When to the goal he comes, his journey ended, his Steeds he looses: this is Indra's doing.
3.30.12

दिद्र्क्षन्तdidṛkṣanta उषसोuṣaso यामन्नक्तोर्विवस्वत्याyāmannaktorvivasvatyā महिmahi चित्रमनीकमcitramanīkam |

विश्वेviśve जानन्तिjānanti महिनाmahinā यदागादिन्द्रस्यyadāghādindrasya कर्मkarma सुक्र्तापुरूणिsukṛtāpurūṇi ||

Men gladly in the course of night would look on the broad bright front of the refulgent Morning;
And all acknowledge, when she comes in glory, the manifold and goodly works of Indra.
3.30.13

महिmahi जयोतिर्निहितंjyotirnihitaṃ वक्षणास्वामाvakṣaṇāsvāmā पक्वंpakvaṃ चरतिcarati बिभ्रतीbibhratī गौःghauḥ |

विश्वंviśvaṃ सवाद्मsvādma सम्भ्र्तमुस्रियायांsambhṛtamusriyāyāṃ यतyat सीमिन्द्रोsīmindro अदधादadadhād भोजनायbhojanāya ||

A mighty splendour rests upon her bosom: bearing ripe milk the Cow, unripe, advances.
All sweetness is collected in the Heifer, sweetness which Indra made for our enjoyment.
3.30.14

इन्द्रindra दर्ह्यdṛhya यामकोशाyāmakośā अभूवनabhūvan यज्ञायyajñāya शिक्षśikṣa गर्णतेghṛṇate सखिभ्यःsakhibhyaḥ |

दुर्मायवोdurmāyavo दुरेवाdurevā मर्त्यासोmartyāso निषङगिणोniṣaṅghiṇo रिपवोripavo हन्त्वासःhantvāsaḥ ||

Barring the way they come. Be firm, O Indra; aid friends to sacrifice and him who singeth.
These must be slain by thee, malignant mortals, armed with ill arts, our quiverbearing foemen.
3.30.15

संsaṃ घोषःghoṣaḥ शर्ण्वे.अवमैरमित्रैर्जहीśṛṇve.avamairamitrairjahī नयेष्वशनिंnyeṣvaśaniṃ तपिष्ठामtapiṣṭhām |

वर्श्चेमधस्तादvṛścemadhastād विvi रुजाrujā सहस्वsahasva जहिjahi रक्षोrakṣo मघवनmaghavan रन्धयस्वrandhayasva ||

A cry is beard from enemies most near us: against them send thy fiercest-flaming weapon.
Rend them from under, crush them and subdue them. Slay, Maghavan, and make the fiends our booty.
3.30.16

उदud वर्हvṛha रक्षःrakṣaḥ सहमूलमिन्द्रsahamūlamindra वर्श्चाvṛścā मध्यंmadhyaṃ परत्यग्रंश्र्णीहिpratyaghraṃśṛṇīhi |

आā कीवतःkīvataḥ सललूकंsalalūkaṃ चकर्थcakartha बरह्मद्विषेbrahmadviṣe तपुषिंtapuṣiṃ हेतिमस्यhetimasya ||

Root up the race of Rākṣasas, O Indra rend it in front and crush it in the middle.
How long hast thou bebaved as one who wavers? Cast thy hot dart at him who hates devotion:
3.30.17

सवस्तयेsvastaye वाजिभिश्चvājibhiśca परणेतःpraṇetaḥ संsaṃ यनyan महीरिषmahīriṣa आसत्सिपूर्वीःāsatsipūrvīḥ |

रायोrāyo वन्तारोvantāro बर्हतःbṛhataḥ सयामास्मेsyāmāsme अस्तुastu भगbhagha इन्द्रप्रजावानindraprajāvān ||

When borne by strong Steeds for our weal, O Leader, thou seatest thee at many noble viands.
May we be winners of abundant riches. May Indra be our wealth with store of children.
3.30.18

आā नोno भरbhara भगमिन्द्रbhaghamindra दयुमन्तंdyumantaṃ निni तेte देष्णस्यdeṣṇasya धीमहिdhīmahi पररेकेprareke |

ऊर्वūrva इवiva पप्रथेpaprathe कामोkāmo अस्मेasme तमाtamā पर्णpṛṇa वसुपतेvasupate वसूनामvasūnām ||

Bestow on us resplendent wealth. O Indra let us enjoy thine overflow of bounty.
Wide as a sea our longing hath expanded, fulfil it, O thou Treasure-Lord of treasures.
3.30.19

इमंimaṃ कामंkāmaṃ मन्दयाmandayā गोभिरश्वैश्चन्द्रवताghobhiraśvaiścandravatā राधसाrādhasā पप्रथश्चpaprathaśca |

सवर्यवोsvaryavo मतिभिस्तुभ्यंmatibhistubhyaṃ विप्राviprā इन्द्रायindrāya वाहःकुशिकासोvāhaḥkuśikāso अक्रनakran ||

With kine and horses satisfy this longing with very splendid bounty skill extend it.
Seeking the light, with hymns to thee, O Indra, Kuśikas have brought their gift, the singers.
3.30.20

आā नोno गोत्राghotrā दर्द्र्हिdardṛhi गोपतेghopate गाःghāḥ समस्मभ्यंsamasmabhyaṃ सनयोsanayo यन्तुyantu वाजाःvājāḥ |

दिवक्षाdivakṣā असिasi वर्षभvṛṣabha सत्यशुष्मो.अस्मभ्यंsatyaśuṣmo.asmabhyaṃ सुsu मघवनmaghavan बोधिbodhi गोदाःghodāḥ ||

Lord of the kine, burst the kine's stable open: cows shall be ours, and strength that wins the booty.
Hero, whose might is true, thy home is heaven: to us, O Maghavan, grant gifts of cattle.
3.30.21

शुनंśunaṃ हुवेमhuvema मघवानमिन्द्रमस्मिनmaghavānamindramasmin भरेbhare नर्तमंnṛtamaṃ वाजसातौvājasātau |

शर्ण्वन्तमुग्रमूतयेśṛṇvantamughramūtaye समत्सुsamatsu घनन्तंghnantaṃ वर्त्राणिvṛtrāṇi संजितंsaṃjitaṃ धनानामdhanānām ||

Call we on Maghavan, auspicious Indra, best Hero in this fight where spoil is gathered,
The Strong who listens, who gives aid in battles, who slays the Vṛtras, wins and gathers riches.
3.30.22
