HYMN XXX. INDRA.


नकिरnakir इन्द्रindra तवदtvad उत्तरोuttaro नna जयायांjyāyāṃ अस्तिasti वर्त्रहनvṛtrahan |

नकिरnakir एवाevā यथाyathā तवमtvam ||

O INDRA, Vṛtra-slayer, none is better, mightier than thou:
Verily there is none like thee.
4.30.1

सत्राsatrā तेte अनुanu कर्ष्टयोkṛṣṭayo विश्वाviśvā चक्रेवcakreva वाव्र्तुःvāvṛtuḥ |

सत्राsatrā महांmahāṃ असिasi शरुतःśrutaḥ ||

Like chariot-wheels these people all together follow after thee:
Thou ever art renowned as Great.
4.30.2

विश्वेviśve चनेदcaned अनाanā तवाtvā देवासdevāsa इन्द्रindra युयुधुःyuyudhuḥ |

यदyad अहाahā नक्तमnaktam आतिरःātiraḥ ||

Not even all the gathered Gods conquered thee, Indra, in the war,
When thou didst lengthen days by night.
4.30.3

यत्रोतyatrota बाधितेभ्यशbādhitebhyaś चक्रंcakraṃ कुत्सायkutsāya युध्यतेyudhyate |

मुषायmuṣāya इन्द्रindra सूर्यमsūryam ||

When for the sake of those oppressed, and Kutsa as he battled,
Thou stolest away the Sun's car-wheel.
4.30.4

यत्रyatra देवांdevāṃ रघायतोṛghāyato विश्वांviśvāṃ अयुध्यayudhya एकeka इतit |

तवमtvam इन्द्रindra वनूंरvanūṃr अहनahan ||

When, fighting singly, Indra. thou o’ercamest all the furious Gods, thou slewest those who strove with thee.
4.30.5

यत्रोतyatrota मर्त्यायmartyāya कमkam अरिणाariṇā इन्द्रindra सूर्यमsūryam |

परावःprāvaḥ शचीभिरśacībhir एतशमetaśam ||

When also for a mortal man, Indra, thou speddest forth the Sun,
And holpest Etaśa with might.
4.30.6

किमkim आदād उतासिutāsi वर्त्रहनvṛtrahan मघवनmaghavan मन्युमत्तमःmanyumattamaḥ |

अत्राहatrāha दानुमdānum आतिरःātiraḥ ||

What? Vṛtra-slayer, art not thou, Maghavan, fiercest in thy wrath?
So hast thou quelled the demon too.
4.30.7

एतदetad घेदghed उतuta वीर्यमvīryam इन्द्रindra चकर्थcakartha पौंस्यमpauṃsyam |

सत्रियंstriyaṃ यदyad दुर्हणायुवंdurhaṇāyuvaṃ वधीरvadhīr दुहितरंduhitaraṃ दिवःdivaḥ ||

And this heroic deed of might thou, Indra, also hast achieved,
That thou didst smite to death the Dame, Heaven's Daughter, meditating ill.
4.30.8

दिवशdivaś चिदcid घाghā दुहितरमduhitaram महानmahān महीयमानामmahīyamānām |

उषासमuṣāsam इन्द्रindra समsam पिणकpiṇak ||

Thou, Indra, Mighty One, didst crush Uṣas, though Daughter of the Sky.
When lifting up herself in pride.
4.30.9

अपोषाapoṣā अनसःanasaḥ सरतsarat सम्पिष्टादsampiṣṭād अहaha बिभ्युषीbibhyuṣī |

निni यतyat सींsīṃ शिश्नथदśiśnathad वर्षाvṛṣā ||

Then from her chariot Uṣas fled, affrighted, from her ruined car.
When the strong God had shattered it.
4.30.10

एतदetad अस्याasyā अनःanaḥ शयेśaye सुसम्पिष्टंsusampiṣṭaṃ विपाश्यvipāśy आā |

ससारsasāra सीमsīm परावतःparāvataḥ ||

So there this car of Uṣas lay, broken to pieces, in Vipāś,
And she herself fled far away.
4.30.11

उतuta सिन्धुंsindhuṃ विबाल्यंvibālyaṃ वितस्थानामvitasthānām अधिadhi कषमिkṣami |

परिpari षठाṣṭhā इन्द्रindra माययाmāyayā ||

Thou, Indra, didst. with magic power resist the overflowing stream
Who spread her waters o’er the land.
4.30.12

उतuta शुष्णस्यśuṣṇasya धर्ष्णुयाdhṛṣṇuyā परpra मर्क्षोmṛkṣo अभिabhi वेदनमvedanam |

पुरोpuro यदyad अस्यasya सम्पिणकsampiṇak ||

Valiantly didst thou seize and take the store which Śuṣṇa had amassed,
When thou didst crush his fortresses.
4.30.13

उतuta दासंdāsaṃ कौलितरमkaulitaram बर्हतःbṛhataḥ पर्वतादparvatād अधिadhi |

अवाहन्नavāhann इन्द्रindra शम्बरमśambaram ||

Thou, Indra, also smotest down Kulitara's son Śambara,
The Dāsa, from the lofty hill.
4.30.14

उतuta दासस्यdāsasya वर्चिनःvarcinaḥ सहस्राणिsahasrāṇi शतावधीःśatāvadhīḥ |

अधिadhi पञ्चpañca परधींरpradhīṃr इवiva ||

Of Dāsa Varcin's thou didst slay the hundred thousand and the five,
Crushed like the fellies, of a car.
4.30.15

उतuta तयमtyam पुत्रमputram अग्रुवःaghruvaḥ पराव्र्क्तंparāvṛktaṃ शतक्रतुःśatakratuḥ |

उक्थेष्वuktheṣv इन्द्रindra आभजतābhajat ||

So Indra, Lord of Heroes, Powers, caused the unwedded damsel's son,
The castaway, to share the lauds.
4.30.16

उतuta तयाtyā तुर्वशायदूturvaśāyadū अस्नाताराasnātārā शचीपतिःśacīpatiḥ |

इन्द्रोindro विद्वांvidvāṃ अपारयतapārayat ||

So sapient Indra, Lord of Might, brought Turvaśa and Yadu, those
Who feared the flood, in safety o’er.
4.30.17

उतuta तयाtyā सद्यsadya आर्याāryā सरयोरsarayor इन्द्रindra पारतःpārataḥ |

अर्णाचित्ररथावधीःarṇācitrarathāvadhīḥ ||

Arṇa and Citraratha, both Āryas, thou, Indra, slewest swift,
On yonder side of Sarayu,
4.30.18

अनुanu दवाdvā जहिताjahitā नयोnayo ऽनधं'ndhaṃ शरोणंśroṇaṃ चca वर्त्रहनvṛtrahan |

नna ततtat तेte सुम्नमsumnam अष्टवेaṣṭave ||

Thou, Vṛtra-slayer, didst conduct those two forlorn, the blind, the lame.
None may attain this bliss of thine.
4.30.19

शतमśatam अश्मन्मयीनामaśmanmayīnām पुरामpurām इन्द्रोindro वयvy आस्यतāsyat |

दिवोदासायdivodāsāya दाशुषेdāśuṣe ||

For Divodāsa, him who brought oblations, Indra overthrew
A hundred fortresses of stone.
4.30.20

अस्वापयदasvāpayad दभीतयेdabhītaye सहस्राsahasrā तरिंशतंtriṃśataṃ हथैःhathaiḥ |

दासानामdāsānām इन्द्रोindro माययाmāyayā ||

The thirty thousand Dāsas he with magic power and weapons sent
To slumber, for Dabhīti's sake.
4.30.21

सsa घेदghed उतासिutāsi वर्त्रहनvṛtrahan समानsamāna इन्द्रindra गोपतिःghopatiḥ |

यसyas ताtā विश्वानिviśvāni चिच्युषेcicyuṣe ||

As such, O Vṛtra-slayer, thou art general Lord of kine for all,
Thou Shaker of all things that be.
4.30.22

उतuta नूनंnūnaṃ यदyad इन्द्रियंindriyaṃ करिष्याkariṣyā इन्द्रindra पौंस्यमpauṃsyam |

अद्याadyā नकिषnakiṣ टदṭad आā मिनतminat ||

Indra, whatever deed of might thou hast this day to execute,
None be there now to hinder it.
4.30.23

वामं-वामंvāmaṃ-vāmaṃ तta आदुरेādure देवोdevo ददात्वdadātv अर्यमाaryamā |

वाममvāmam पूषाpūṣā वाममvāmam भगोbhagho वामंvāmaṃ देवःdevaḥ करूळतीkarūḷatī ||

O Watchful One, may Aryaman the God give thee all goodly things.
May Pūṣan, Bhaga, and the God Karūḷatī give all things fair.
