HYMN LVI. HEAVEN AND EARTH.


महीmahī दयावाप्र्थिवीdyāvāpṛthivī इहiha जयेष्ठेjyeṣṭhe रुचाrucā भवतांbhavatāṃ शुचयद्भिरśucayadbhir अर्कैःarkaiḥ |

यतyat सींsīṃ वरिष्ठेvariṣṭhe बर्हतीbṛhatī विमिन्वनviminvan रुवदruvad धोक्षाdhokṣā पप्रथानेभिरpaprathānebhir एवैःevaiḥ ||

MAY mighty Heaven and Earth, most meet for honour, be present here with light and gleaming splendours;
When, fixing them apart, vast, most extensive, the Steer roars loudly in far-reaching courses.
4.56.1

देवीdevī देवेभिरdevebhir यजतेyajate यजत्रैरyajatrair अमिनतीaminatī तस्थतुरtasthatur उक्षमाणेukṣamāṇe |

रतावरीṛtāvarī अद्रुहाadruhā देवपुत्रेdevaputre यज्ञस्यyajñasya नेत्रीnetrī शुचयद्भिरśucayadbhir अर्कैःarkaiḥ ||

The Goddesses with Gods, holy with holy, the Two stand pouring out their rain, exhaustless:
Faithful and guileless, having Gods for children, leaders of sacrifice with shining splendours.
4.56.2

सsa इतit सवपाsvapā भुवनेष्वbhuvaneṣv आसāsa यya इमेime दयावाप्र्थिवीdyāvāpṛthivī जजानjajāna |

उर्वीurvī गभीरेghabhīre रजसीrajasī सुमेकेsumeke अवंशेavaṃśe धीरःdhīraḥ शच्याśacyā समsam ऐरतairat ||

Sure in the worlds he was a skilful Craftsman, he who produced these Twain the Earth and Heaven.
Wise, with his power he brought both realms, together spacious and deep, well-fashioned, unsupported.
4.56.3

नूnū रोदसीrodasī बर्हद्भिरbṛhadbhir नोno वरूथैःvarūthaiḥ पत्नीवद्भिरpatnīvadbhir इषयन्तीiṣayantī सजोषाःsajoṣāḥ |

उरूचीurūcī विश्वेviśve यजतेyajate निni पातंpātaṃ धियाdhiyā सयामsyāma रथ्यःrathyaḥ सदासाःsadāsāḥ ||

O Heaven and Earth, with one accord promoting, with high protection as of Queens, our welfare,
Far-reaching, universal, holy, guard us. May we, car-borne, through song be victors ever.
4.56.4

परpra वामvām महिmahi दयवीdyavī अभ्यabhy उपस्तुतिमupastutim भरामहेbharāmahe |

शुचीśucī उपupa परशस्तयेpraśastaye ||

To both of you, O Heaven and Earth, we bring our lofty song of praise,
Pure Ones! to glorify you both.
4.56.5

पुनानेpunāne तन्वाtanvā मिथःmithaḥ सवेनsvena दक्षेणdakṣeṇa राजथःrājathaḥ |

ऊह्याथेūhyāthe सनादsanād रतमṛtam ||

Ye sanctify each other's form, by your own proper might ye rule,
And from of old observe the Law.
4.56.6

महीmahī मित्रस्यmitrasya साधथसsādhathas तरन्तीtarantī पिप्रतीpipratī रतमṛtam |

परिpari यज्ञंyajñaṃ निni षेदथुःṣedathuḥ ||

Furthering and fulfilling, ye, O Mighty, perfect Mitra's Law.
Ye sit around our sacrifice.
