HYMN XVI. AGNI.


तवमग्नेtvamaghne यज्ञानांyajñānāṃ होताhotā विश्वेषांviśveṣāṃ हितःhitaḥ |

देवेभिर्मानुषेdevebhirmānuṣe जनेjane ||

PRIEST of all sacrifices hast thou been appointed by the Gods,
Agni, amid the race of man.
6.16.1

सsa नोno मन्द्राभिरध्वरेmandrābhiradhvare जिह्वाभिर्यजाjihvābhiryajā महःmahaḥ |

आā देवानdevān वक्षिvakṣi यक्षिyakṣi चca ||

So with thy joyous tongues for us sacrifice nobly in this rite.
Bring thou the Gods and worship them.
6.16.2

वेत्थाvetthā हिhi वेधोvedho अध्वनःadhvanaḥ पथश्चpathaśca देवाञ्जसाdevāñjasā |

अग्नेaghne यज्ञेषुyajñeṣu सुक्रतोsukrato ||

For well, O God, Disposer, thou knowest, straight on, the paths and ways,
Agni, most wise in sacrifice.
6.16.3

तवामीळेtvāmīḷe अधadha दविताdvitā भरतोbharato वाजिभिःvājibhiḥ शुनमśunam |

ईजेīje यज्ञेयतyajñeayat दिविdivi ||

Thee, too, hath Bhārata of old, with mighty men, implored for bliss.
And worshipped thee the worshipful.
6.16.4

तवमिमाtvamimā वार्याvāryā पुरुpuru दिवोदासायdivodāsāya सुन्वतेsunvate |

भरद्वाजायbharadvājāya दाशुषेdāśuṣe ||

Thou givest these abundant boons to Divodāsa pouring forth,
To Bharadvāja offering gifts.
6.16.5

तवंtvaṃ दूतोdūto अमर्त्यamartya आā वहाvahā दैव्यंdaivyaṃ जनमjanam |

शर्ण्वनśṛṇvan विप्रस्यviprasya सुष्टुतिमsuṣṭutim ||

Do thou, Immortal Messenger, bring hither the Celestial Folk;
Hearing the singer's eulogy.
6.16.6

तवामग्नेtvāmaghne सवाध्योsvādhyo मर्तासोmartāso देवdeva वीतयेvītaye |

यज्ञेषुyajñeṣu देवमीळतेdevamīḷate ||

Mortals with pious thought implore thee, Agni, God, at holy rites,
To come unto the feast of Gods.
6.16.7

तवtava परpra यक्षिyakṣi सन्द्र्शमुतsandṛśamuta करतुंkratuṃ सुदानवःsudānavaḥ |

विश्वेviśve जुषन्तjuṣanta कामिनःkāminaḥ ||

I glorify thine aspect and the might of thee the Bountilul.
All those who love shall joy in thee,
6.16.8

तवंtvaṃ होताhotā मनुर्हितोmanurhito वह्निरासाvahnirāsā विदुष्टरःviduṣṭaraḥ |

अग्नेaghne यक्षिदिवोyakṣidivo विशःviśaḥ ||

Invoker placed by Manus, thou, Agni, art near, the wisest Priest:
Pay worship to the Tribes of Heaven.
6.16.9

अग्नaghna आā याहिyāhi वीतयेvītaye गर्णानोghṛṇāno हव्यदातयेhavyadātaye |

निni होताhotā सत्सिsatsi बर्हिषिbarhiṣi ||

Come, Agni, lauded, to the feast; come to the offering of the gifts.
As Priest be seated on the grass.
6.16.10

तंtaṃ तवाtvā समिद्भिरङगिरोsamidbhiraṅghiro घर्तेनghṛtena वर्धयामसिvardhayāmasi |

बर्हच्छोचाbṛhacchocā यविष्ठ्यyaviṣṭhya ||

So, Aṅgiras, we make thee strong with fuel and with holy oil.
Blaze high, thou youngest of the Gods.
6.16.11

सsa नःnaḥ पर्थुpṛthu शरवाय्यमछाśravāyyamachā देवdeva विवाससिvivāsasi |

बर्हदग्नेbṛhadaghne सुवीर्यमsuvīryam ||

For us thou winnest, Agni, God, heroic strength exceeding great,
Far-spreading and of high renown.
6.16.12

तवामग्नेtvāmaghne पुष्करादध्यथर्वाpuṣkarādadhyatharvā निरमन्थतniramanthata |

मूर्ध्नोmūrdhno विश्वस्यviśvasya वाघतःvāghataḥ ||

Agni, Atharvan brought thee forth, by rubbing, from the lotus-flower,
The head of Visva, of the Priest.
6.16.13

तमुtamu तवाtvā दध्यंंdadhyaṃṃ रषिःṛṣiḥ पुत्रputra ईधेīdhe अथर्वणःatharvaṇaḥ |

वर्त्रहणंvṛtrahaṇaṃ पुरन्दरमpurandaram ||

Thee. Vṛtra's slayer, breaker down of castles, hath Atharvan's son,
Dadhyac the Ṛṣi, lighted up.
6.16.14

तमुtamu तवाtvā पाथ्योpāthyo वर्षाvṛṣā समीधेsamīdhe दस्युहन्तममdasyuhantamam |

धनंजयंdhanaṃjayaṃ रणे-रणेraṇe-raṇe ||

The hero Pathya kindled thee the Dasyus'. most destructive foe,
Winner of spoil in every fight.
6.16.15

एह्यूehyū षुṣu बरवाणिbravāṇi ते.अग्नte.aghna इत्थेतराitthetarā गिरःghiraḥ |

एभिर्वर्धासebhirvardhāsa इन्दुभिःindubhiḥ ||

Come, here, O Agni, will I sing verily other songs to thee,
And with these drops shalt thou grow strong.
6.16.16

यत्रyatra कवkva चca तेte मनोmano दक्षंdakṣaṃ दधसdadhasa उत्तरमuttaram |

तत्राtatrā सदःsadaḥ कर्णवसेkṛṇavase ||

Where’er thy mind applies itself, vigour preeminent hast thou:
There wilt thou gain a dwelling-place.
6.16.17

नहिnahi तेte पूर्तमक्षिपदpūrtamakṣipad भुवनbhuvan नेमानांnemānāṃ वसोvaso |

अथाathā दुवोduvo वनवसेvanavase ||

Not for a moment only lasts thy bounty, good to many a one!
Our service therefore shalt thou gain.
6.16.18

आग्निरगामिāghniraghāmi भारतोbhārato वर्त्रहाvṛtrahā पुरुचेतनःpurucetanaḥ |

दिवोदासस्यdivodāsasya सत्पतिःsatpatiḥ ||

Agni, the Bhārata, hath been sought, the Vṛtra-slayer, marked of all,
Yea, Divodāsa's Hero Lord.
6.16.19

सsa हिhi विश्वातिviśvāti पार्थिवाpārthivā रयिंrayiṃ दाशनdāśan महित्वनाmahitvanā |

वन्वन्नवातोvanvannavāto अस्त्र्तःastṛtaḥ ||

For he gave riches that surpass in greatness all the things of earth,
Fighting untroubled, unsubdued.
6.16.20

सsa परत्नवनpratnavan नवीयसाग्नेnavīyasāghne दयुम्नेनdyumnena संयताsaṃyatā |

बर्हतbṛhat ततन्थभानुनाtatanthabhānunā ||

Thou, Agni, as in days of old, with recent glory, gathered light,
Hast overspread the lofty heaven.
6.16.21

परpra वःvaḥ सखायोsakhāyo अग्नयेaghnaye सतोमंstomaṃ यज्ञंyajñaṃ चca धर्ष्णुयाdhṛṣṇuyā |

अर्चगायarcaghāya चca वेधसेvedhase ||

Bring to your Agni, O my friends, boldly your laud and sacrifice:
Give the Disposer praise and song.
6.16.22

सsa हिhi योyo मानुषाmānuṣā युगाyughā सीददsīdad धोताdhotā कविक्रतुःkavikratuḥ |

दूतश्चdūtaśca हव्यवाहनःhavyavāhanaḥ ||

For as sagacious Herald he hath sat through every age of man,
Oblation-bearing messenger.
6.16.23

ताtā राजानाrājānā शुचिव्रतादित्यानśucivratādityān मारुतंmārutaṃ गणमghaṇam |

वसोvaso यक्षीहyakṣīha रोदसीrodasī ||

Bring those Two Kings whose ways are pure, Ādityas, and the Marut host,
Excellent God! and Heaven and Earth.
6.16.24

वस्वीvasvī तेte अग्नेaghne सन्द्र्ष्टिरिषयतेsandṛṣṭiriṣayate मर्त्यायmartyāya |

ऊर्जोūrjo नपादम्र्तस्यnapādamṛtasya ||

For strong and active mortal man, excellent, Agni, is the look Of thee Immortal, Son of Strength
6.16.25

करत्वाkratvā दाdā अस्तुastu शरेष्ठो.अद्यśreṣṭho.adya तवाtvā वन्वनvanvan सुरेक्णाःsurekṇāḥ |

मर्तmarta आनाशānāśa सुव्र्क्तिमsuvṛktim ||

Rich through his wisdom, noblest be the giver serving thee to-day:
The man hath brought his hymn of praise.
6.16.26

तेte तेte अग्नेaghne तवोताtvotā इषयन्तोiṣayanto विश्वमायुःviśvamāyuḥ |

तरन्तोtaranto अर्योaryo अरातीर्वन्वन्तोarātīrvanvanto अर्योaryo अरातीःarātīḥ ||

These, Agni, these are helped by thee, who strong and active all their lives,
O'ercome the malice of the foe, fight down the malice ofthe foe.
6.16.27

अग्निस्तिग्मेनaghnistighmena शोचिषाśociṣā यासदyāsad विश्वंviśvaṃ नयत्रिणमnyatriṇam |

अग्निर्नोवनतेaghnirnovanate रयिमrayim ||

May Agni with his pointed blaze cast down each fierce devouring fiend
May Agni win us wealth by war.
6.16.28

सुवीरंsuvīraṃ रयिमाrayimā भरbhara जातवेदोjātavedo विचर्षणेvicarṣaṇe |

जहिjahi रक्षांसिrakṣāṃsi सुक्रतोsukrato ||

O active Jātavedas, bring riches with store of hero sons:
Slay thou the demons, O Most Wise.
6.16.29

तवंtvaṃ नःnaḥ पाह्यंहसोpāhyaṃhaso जातवेदोjātavedo अघायतःaghāyataḥ |

रक्षाrakṣā णोṇo बरह्मणसbrahmaṇas कवेkave ||

Keep us, O Jātavedas, from the troubling of the man of sin:
Guard us thou Sage who knowest prayer.
6.16.30

योyo नोno अग्नेaghne दुरेवdureva आā मर्तोmarto वधायvadhāya दाशतिdāśati |

तस्मानtasmān नःnaḥ पाह्यंहसःpāhyaṃhasaḥ ||

Whatever sinner, Agni, brings oblations to procure our death,
Save us from woe that he would work.
6.16.31

तवंtvaṃ तंtaṃ देवdeva जिह्वयाjihvayā परिpari बाधस्वbādhasva दुष्क्र्तमduṣkṛtam |

मर्तोmarto योyo नोजिघांसतिnojighāṃsati ||

Drive from us with thy tongue, O God, the man who doeth evil deeds,
The mortal who would strike us dead.
6.16.32

भरद्वाजायbharadvājāya सप्रथःsaprathaḥ शर्मśarma यछyacha सहन्त्यsahantya |

अग्नेaghne वरेण्यंवसुvareṇyaṃvasu ||

Give shelter reaching far and wide to Bharadvāja, conquering Lord!
Agni, send wealth most excellent.
6.16.33

अग्निर्व्र्त्राणिaghnirvṛtrāṇi जङघनदjaṅghanad दरविणस्युर्विपन्ययाdraviṇasyurvipanyayā |

समिद्धःsamiddhaḥ शुक्रśukra आहुतःāhutaḥ ||

May Agni slay the Vṛtras,—fain for riches, through the lord of song,
Served with oblation, kindled, bright.
6.16.34

गर्भेgharbhe मातुःmātuḥ पितुषpituṣ पिताpitā विदिद्युतानोvididyutāno अक्षरेakṣare |

सीदन्न्र्तस्यsīdannṛtasya योनिमाyonimā ||

His Father's Father, shining in his Mother's everlasting side,
Set on the seat of holy Law.
6.16.35

बरह्मbrahma परजावदाprajāvadā भरbhara जातवेदोjātavedo विचर्षणेvicarṣaṇe |

अग्नेaghne यदyad दीदdīd अयदayad दिविdivi ||

O active Jātavedas, bring devotion that wins progeny, Agni, that it may shine to heaven.
6.16.36

उपupa तवाtvā रण्वसन्द्र्शंraṇvasandṛśaṃ परयस्वन्तःprayasvantaḥ सहस्क्र्तsahaskṛta |

अग्नेaghne सस्र्ज्महेsasṛjmahe गिरःghiraḥ ||

O Child of Strength, to thee whose look is lovely we with dainty food,
O Agni, have poured forth our songs.
6.16.37

उपupa छायामिवchāyāmiva घर्णेरगन्मghṛṇeraghanma शर्मśarma तेte वयमvayam |

अग्नेaghne हिरण्यसन्द्र्शःhiraṇyasandṛśaḥ ||

To thee for shelter are we come, as to the shade from fervent heat
Agni, who glitterest like gold.
6.16.38

यya उग्रughra इवiva शर्यहाśaryahā तिग्मश्र्ङगोtighmaśṛṅgho नna वंसगःvaṃsaghaḥ |

अग्नेaghne पुरोpuro रुरोजिथrurojitha ||

Mighty as one who slays with shafts, or like a bull with sharpened horn,
Agni, thou breakest down the forts.
6.16.39

आā यंyaṃ हस्तेhaste नna खादिनंkhādinaṃ शिशुंśiśuṃ जातंjātaṃ नna बिभ्रतिbibhrati |

विशामग्निंviśāmaghniṃ सवध्वरमsvadhvaram ||

Whom, like an infant newly born, devourer, in their arms they bear,
Men's Agni, skilled in holy rites.
6.16.40

परpra देवंdevaṃ देववीतयेdevavītaye भरताbharatā वसुवित्तममvasuvittamam |

आā सवेsve योनौyonau निni षीदतुṣīdatu ||

Bear to the banquet of the Gods the God best finder-out of wealth,
Let him he seated in his place.
6.16.41

आā जातंjātaṃ जातवेदसिjātavedasi परियंpriyaṃ शिशीतातिथिमśiśītātithim |

सयोनsyona आā गर्हपतिमghṛhapatim ||

In Jātavedas kindle ye the dear guest who hath now appeared
In a soft place, the homestead's Lord.
6.16.42

अग्नेaghne युक्ष्वाyukṣvā हिhi येye तवाश्वासोtavāśvāso देवdeva साधवःsādhavaḥ |

अरंaraṃ वहन्तिvahanti मन्यवेmanyave ||

Harness, O Agni, O thou God, thy steeds which are most excellent:
They bear thee as thy spirit wills.
6.16.43

अछाachā नोno याह्याyāhyā वहाभिvahābhi परयांसिprayāṃsi वीतयेvītaye |

आā देवानdevān सोमपीतयेsomapītaye ||

Come hither, bring the Gods to us to taste the sacrificial feast,
To drink the draught of Soma juice.
6.16.44

उदग्नेudaghne भारतbhārata दयुमदजस्रेणdyumadajasreṇa दविद्युततdavidyutat |

शोचाśocā विvi भाह्यजरbhāhyajara ||

O Agni of the Bharatas, blaze high with everlasting might,
Shine forth and gleam, Eternal One.
6.16.45

वीतीvītī योyo देवंdevaṃ मर्तोmarto दुवस्येदग्निमीळीताध्वरेduvasyedaghnimīḷītādhvare हविष्मानhaviṣmān |

होतारंhotāraṃ सत्ययजंsatyayajaṃ रोदस्योरुत्तानहस्तोrodasyoruttānahasto नमसाnamasā विवासेतvivāset ||

The mortal man who serves the God with banquet, and, bringing gifts at sacrifice, lauds Agni,
May well attract, with prayer and hands uplifted, the Priest of Heaven and Earth, true Sacrificer.
6.16.46

आā तेte अग्नaghna रचाṛcā हविर्ह्र्दाhavirhṛdā तष्टंtaṣṭaṃ भरामसिbharāmasi |

तेte तेte भवन्तूक्षणbhavantūkṣaṇa रषभासोṛṣabhāso वशाvaśā उतuta ||

Agni, we bring thee, with our hymn, oblation fashioned in the heart.
Let these be oxen unto thee, let these be bulls and kine to thee.
6.16.47

अग्निंaghniṃ देवासोdevāso अग्रियमिन्धतेaghriyamindhate वर्त्रहन्तममvṛtrahantamam |

येनाyenā वसून्याभ्र्ताvasūnyābhṛtā तर्ळ्हाtṛḷhā रक्षांसिrakṣāṃsi वाजिनाषुvājināṣu यज्ञियमyajñiyam ||

The Gods enkindle Agni, best slayer of Vṛtra, first in rank,
The Mighty, One who brings us wealth and crushes down the Rākṣasas.
