HYMN XV. AGNI.


इममूimamū षुṣu वोvo अतिथिमुषर्बुधंatithimuṣarbudhaṃ विश्वासांviśvāsāṃ विशांviśāṃ पतिम्र्ञ्जसेpatimṛñjase गिराghirā |

वेतीदvetīd दिवोdivo जनुषाjanuṣā कच्चिदाkaccidā शुचिर्ज्योकśucirjyok चिदत्तिcidatti गर्भोgharbho यदच्युतमyadacyutam ||

WITH this my song I strive to reach this guest of yours, who wakes at early morn, the Lord of all the tribes.
Each time he comes from heaven, the Pure One from of old: from ancient days the Child cats everlasting food.
6.15.1

मित्रंmitraṃ नna यंyaṃ सुधितंsudhitaṃ भर्गवोbhṛghavo दधुर्वनस्पतावीड्यमूर्ध्वशोचिषमdadhurvanaspatāvīḍyamūrdhvaśociṣam |

सsa तवंtvaṃ सुप्रीतोsuprīto वीतहव्येvītahavye अद्भुतadbhuta परशस्तिभिर्महयसेpraśastibhirmahayase दिवेdive दिवेdive ||

Whom, well-dis sed, the Blirgus stablished as a rriend, whom men must glorify, high-flaming in the wood.
As such, most friendly, thou art every day extolled in lauds by Vitahavya, O thou wondrous God.
6.15.2

सsa तवंtvaṃ दक्षस्याव्र्कोdakṣasyāvṛko वर्धोvṛdho भूरर्यःbhūraryaḥ परस्यान्तरस्यparasyāntarasya तरुषःtaruṣaḥ |

रायःrāyaḥ सूनोsūno सहसोsahaso मर्त्येष्वाmartyeṣvā छर्दिर्यछchardiryacha वीतहव्यायvītahavyāya सप्रथोsapratho भरद्वाजायbharadvājāya सप्रथःsaprathaḥ ||

Be thou the foeless helper of the skilful man, subduer of the enemy near or far away.
Bestow a wealthy home on men, O Son of Strength. Give Vitahavya riches spreading far and wide, give Bharadvāja wide-spread wealth.
6.15.3

दयुतानंdyutānaṃ वोvo अतिथिंatithiṃ सवर्णरमग्निंsvarṇaramaghniṃ होतारंhotāraṃ मनुषःmanuṣaḥ सवध्वरमsvadhvaram |

विप्रंvipraṃ नna दयुक्षवचसंdyukṣavacasaṃ सुव्र्क्तिभिर्हव्यवाहमरतिंsuvṛktibhirhavyavāhamaratiṃ देवंdevaṃ रञ्जसेṛñjase ||

Him, your refulgent guest, Agni who comes from heaven, the Herald of mankind, well-skilled in sacred rites,
Who, like a holy singer, utters heavenly words, oblation-bearer, envoy, God, I seek with hymns.
6.15.4

पावकयाpāvakayā यश्चितयन्त्याyaścitayantyā कर्पाkṛpā कषामनkṣāman रुरुचruruca उषसोuṣaso नna भानुनाbhānunā |

तूर्वनtūrvan नna यामन्नेतशस्यyāmannetaśasya नूnū रणraṇa आā योyo घर्णेghṛṇe नna तत्र्षाणोtatṛṣāṇo अजरःajaraḥ ||

Who with his purifying, eye-attracting form hath shone upon the earth as with the light of Dawn;
Who speeding on, as in the fight of Etaia, cometh, untouched by age, as one athirst in heat.
6.15.5

अग्निम-अग्निंaghnim-aghniṃ वःvaḥ समिधाsamidhā दुवस्यतduvasyata परियम-परियंpriyam-priyaṃ वोvo अतिथिंatithiṃ गर्णीषणिghṛṇīṣaṇi |

उपupa वोvo गीर्भिरम्र्तंghīrbhiramṛtaṃ विवासतvivāsata देवोdevo देवेषुdeveṣu वनतेvanate हिhi वार्यंvāryaṃ देवोdevo देवेषुdeveṣu वनतेvanate हिhi नोno दुवःduvaḥ ||

Worship ye Agni, Agni, with your log of wood; praise your beloved, your beloved guest with songs.
Invite ye the Immortal hither with your hymns. A God among the Gods, he loveth what is choice, loveth our service, God mid Gods.
6.15.6

समिद्धमग्निंsamiddhamaghniṃ समिधाsamidhā गिराghirā गर्णेghṛṇe शुचिंśuciṃ पावकंpāvakaṃ पुरोpuro अध्वरेadhvare धरुवमdhruvam |

विप्रंvipraṃ होतारंhotāraṃ पुरुवारमद्रुहंpuruvāramadruhaṃ कविंkaviṃ सुम्नैरीमहेsumnairīmahe जातवेदसमjātavedasam ||

Agni inflamed with fuel in my song I sing, pure, Cleanser, steadlast, set in tront at sacrifice.
Wise Jātavedas we implore with prayers for bliss the Priest, the holy Singer, bounteous, void of guile.
6.15.7

तवांtvāṃ दूतमग्नेdūtamaghne अम्र्तंamṛtaṃ युगे-युगेyughe-yughe हव्यवाहंhavyavāhaṃ दधिरेdadhire पायुमीड्यमpāyumīḍyam |

देवासश्चdevāsaśca मर्तासश्चmartāsaśca जाग्र्विंjāghṛviṃ विभुंvibhuṃ विश्पतिंviśpatiṃ नमसाnamasā निni षेदिरेṣedire ||

Men, Agni, in each age have made thee, Deathiess One, their envoy, offering-bearer, guard adorable.
With reverence Gods and mortals have established thee, the ever-watchful, omnipresent Household Lord.
6.15.8

विभूषन्नग्नvibhūṣannaghna उभयाननुubhayānanu वरताvratā दूतोdūto देवानांdevānāṃ रजसीrajasī समीयसेsamīyase |

यतyat तेte धीतिंdhītiṃ सुमतिमाव्र्णीमहे.अधsumatimāvṛṇīmahe.adha समाsmā नस्त्रिवरूथःnastrivarūthaḥ शिवोśivo भवbhava ||

Thou, Agni, ordering the works and ways of both, as envoy of the Gods traversest both the worlds.
When we lay claim to thy regard and gracious fare, be thou to us a thriceprotecting friendly guard.
6.15.9

तंtaṃ सुप्रतीकंsupratīkaṃ सुद्र्शंsudṛśaṃ सवञ्चमविद्वांसोsvañcamavidvāṃso विदुष्टरंviduṣṭaraṃ सपेमsapema |

सsa यक्षदyakṣad विश्वाviśvā वयुनानिvayunāni विद्वानvidvān परpra हव्यमग्निरम्र्तेषुhavyamaghniramṛteṣu वोचतvocat ||

Him fair of face, rapid, and fair to look on, him very wise may we who know not follow.
Let him who knows all rules invite for worship, Agru announce our offering to the Immortals.
6.15.10

तमग्नेtamaghne पास्युतpāsyuta तंtaṃ पिपर्षिpiparṣi यस्तyasta आनटānaṭ कवयेkavaye शूरśūra धीतिमdhītim |

यज्ञस्यyajñasya वाvā निशितिंniśitiṃ वोदितिंvoditiṃ वाvā तमितtamit पर्णक्षिpṛṇakṣi शवसोतśavasota रायाrāyā ||

Him, Agni, thou deliverest and savest who brings him prayer to thee the Wise, O Hero,
The end of sacrifice or its inception; yea, thou endowest him with power and riches.
6.15.11

तवमग्नेtvamaghne वनुष्यतोvanuṣyato निni पाहिpāhi तवमुtvamu नःnaḥ सहसावन्नवद्यातsahasāvannavadyāt |

संsaṃ तवाtvā धवस्मन्वदभ्येतुdhvasmanvadabhyetu पाथःpāthaḥ संsaṃ रयिrayi सप्र्हयाय्यःसहस्रीspṛhayāyyaḥsahasrī ||

Guard us from him who would assail us, Agni; preserve us, O thou Victor, from dishonour.
Here let the place of darkening come upon thee: may wealth be ours, desirable in thousands.
6.15.12

अग्निर्होताaghnirhotā गर्हपतिःghṛhapatiḥ सsa राजाrājā विश्वाviśvā वेदveda जनिमाjanimā जातवेदःjātavedaḥ |

देवानामुतdevānāmuta योyo मर्त्यानांmartyānāṃ यजिष्ठःyajiṣṭhaḥ सsa परpra यजतांyajatāṃ रतावाṛtāvā ||

Agni, the Priest, is King, Lord of the homestead, he, Jatayedas, knows all generations.
Most skilful worshipper mid Gods and mortals, may he begin the sacrifice, the Holy.
6.15.13

अग्नेaghne यदद्यyadadya विशोviśo अध्वरस्यadhvarasya होतःhotaḥ पावकशोचेpāvakaśoce वेषveṣ टवंṭvaṃ हिhi यज्वाyajvā |

रताṛtā यजासिyajāsi महिनाmahinā विvi यदyad भूर्हव्याbhūrhavyā वहvaha यविष्ठyaviṣṭha याyā तेte अद्यadya ||

Whate’er to-day thou, bright-flamed Priest, enjoyest from the man's rite-for thou art sacrificer-
Worship, for duly dost thou spread in greatness: bear off thine ofrerings of to-day, Most Youthful.
6.15.14

अभिabhi परयांसिprayāṃsi सुधितानिsudhitāni हिhi खयोkhyo निni तवाtvā दधीतdadhīta रोदसीrodasī यजध्यैyajadhyai |

अवाavā नोno मघवनmaghavan वाजसातावग्नेvājasātāvaghne विश्वानिviśvāni दुरिताduritā तरेमtarema ताtā तरेमtarema तवावसाtavāvasā तरेमtarema ||

Look thou upon the viands duly laid for thee. Fain would he set thee here to worship Heaven and,Earth.
Help us, O liberal Agni, in the strife for spoil, so that we may o’ercome all things that trouble us, o’ercome, o’ercome them with thy help.
6.15.15

अग्नेaghne विश्वेभिःviśvebhiḥ सवनीकsvanīka देवैरूर्णावन्तंdevairūrṇāvantaṃ परथमःprathamaḥ सीदsīda योनिमyonim |

कुलायिनंkulāyinaṃ घर्तवन्तंghṛtavantaṃ सवित्रेsavitre यज्ञंyajñaṃ नयnaya यजमानायyajamānāya साधुsādhu ||

Together with all Gods, O fair-faced Agni, be seated first upon the woollined altar,
Nest-like, bedewed with oil. Bear this our worship to Savitar who sacrifices rightly.
6.15.16

इममुimamu तयमथर्ववदग्निंtyamatharvavadaghniṃ मन्थन्तिmanthanti वेधसःvedhasaḥ |

यमङकूयन्तमानयन्नमूरंyamaṅkūyantamānayannamūraṃ शयाव्याभ्यःśyāvyābhyaḥ ||

Here the arranging priests, as did Atharvan, rub this Agni forth,
Whom, not bewildered, as he moved in winding ways, they brought from gloom.
6.15.17

जनिष्वाjaniṣvā देववीतयेdevavītaye सर्वताताsarvatātā सवस्तयेsvastaye |

आā देवानdevān वक्ष्यम्र्तानvakṣyamṛtān रताव्र्धोṛtāvṛdho यज्ञंyajñaṃ देवेषुdeveṣu पिस्प्र्शःpispṛśaḥ ||

For the Gods’ banquet be thou born, for full perfection and for weal.
Bring the Immortal Gods who strengthen holy Law: so let our sacrifice reach the Gods.
6.15.18

वयमुvayamu तवाtvā गर्हपतेghṛhapate जनानामग्नेjanānāmaghne अकर्मakarma समिधाsamidhā बर्हन्तमbṛhantam |

अस्थूरिasthūri नोno गार्हपत्यानिghārhapatyāni सन्तुsantu तिग्मेनtighmena नस्तेजसाnastejasā संsaṃ शिशाधिśiśādhi ||

O Agni, Lord and Master of men's homesteads, with kindled fuel we have made thee mighty.
Let not our household gear be found defective. Sharpen us with thy penetrating splendour.
6.15.19
