HYMN LX. MITRA-VARUṆA.


यदद्यyadadya सूर्यsūrya बरवो.अनागाbravo.anāghā उद्यनudyan मित्रायmitrāya वरुणायvaruṇāya सत्यमsatyam |

वयंvayaṃ देवत्रादितेdevatrādite सयामsyāma तवtava परियासोpriyāso अर्यमनaryaman गर्णन्तःghṛṇantaḥ ||

WHEN thou, O Sun, this day, arising sinless, shalt speak the truth to Varuṇa and Mitra,
O Aditi, may all the Deities love us, and thou, O Aryaman, while we are singing.
7.60.1

एषeṣa सयsya मित्रावरुणाmitrāvaruṇā नर्चक्षाnṛcakṣā उभेubhe उदेतिudeti सूर्योsūryo अभिabhi जमनjman |

विश्वस्यviśvasya सथातुर्जगतश्चsthāturjaghataśca गोपाghopā रजुṛju मर्तेषुmarteṣu वर्जिनाvṛjinā चपश्यनcapaśyan ||

Looking on man, O Varuṇa and Mitra, this Sun ascendeth up by both the pathways,
Guardian of all things fixt, of all that moveth, beholding good and evil acts of mortals.
7.60.2

अयुक्तayukta सप्तsapta हरितःharitaḥ सधस्थादsadhasthād याyā ईंīṃ वहन्तिvahanti सूर्यंsūryaṃ घर्ताचीःghṛtācīḥ |

धामानिdhāmāni मित्रावरुणाmitrāvaruṇā युवाकुःyuvākuḥ संsaṃ योyo यूथेवyūtheva जनिमानिjanimāni चष्टेcaṣṭe ||

He from their home hath yoked the Seven gold Coursers who, dropping oil and fatness, carry Sūrya.
Yours, Varuṇa and Mitra, he surveyeth the worlds and living creatures like a herdsman.
7.60.3

उदud वांvāṃ पर्क्षासोpṛkṣāso मधुमन्तोmadhumanto अस्थुराasthurā सूर्योsūryo अरुहच्छुक्रमर्णःaruhacchukramarṇaḥ |

यस्माyasmā आदित्याādityā अध्वनोadhvano रदन्तिradanti मित्रोmitro अर्यमाaryamā वरुणःसजोषाःvaruṇaḥsajoṣāḥ ||

Your coursers rich in store of sweets have mounted: to the bright ocean Sūrya hath ascended,
For whom the Ādityas make his pathway ready, Aryaman, Mitra, Varuṇa, accordant.
7.60.4

इमेime चेतारोcetāro अन्र्तस्यanṛtasya भूरेर्मित्रोbhūrermitro अर्यमाaryamā वरुणोvaruṇo हिhi सन्तिsanti |

इमima रतस्यṛtasya वाव्र्धुर्दुरोणेvāvṛdhurduroṇe शग्मासःśaghmāsaḥ पुत्राputrā अदितेरदब्धाःaditeradabdhāḥ ||

For these, even Aryaman, Varuṇa and Mitra, are the chastisers of all guile and falsehood.
These, Aditi's Sons, infallible and mighty, have waxen in the home of law Eternal.
7.60.5

इमेime मित्रोmitro वरुणोvaruṇo दूळभासो.अचेतसंdūḷabhāso.acetasaṃ चिच्चितयन्तिciccitayanti दक्षैःdakṣaiḥ |

अपिapi करतुंkratuṃ सुचेतसंsucetasaṃ वतन्तस्तिरश्चिदंहःvatantastiraścidaṃhaḥ सुपथानयन्तिsupathānayanti ||

These, Mitra, Varuṇa whom none deceiveth, with great power quicken even the fool to wisdom,
And, wakening, moreover, thoughtful insight, lead it by easy paths o’er grief and trouble.
7.60.6

इमेime दिवोdivo अनिमिषाanimiṣā पर्थिव्याश्चिकित्वांसोpṛthivyāścikitvāṃso अचेतसंacetasaṃ नयन्तिnayanti |

परव्राजेpravrāje चिनcin नद्योnadyo गाधमस्तिghādhamasti पारंpāraṃ नोno अस्यasya विष्पितस्यviṣpitasya पर्षनparṣan ||

They ever vigilant, with eyes that close not, caring for heaven and earth, lead on the thoughtless.
Even in the river's bed there is a shallow. across this broad expanse may they conduct us.
7.60.7

यदyad गोपावददितिःghopāvadaditiḥ शर्मśarma भद्रंbhadraṃ मित्रोmitro यछन्तिyachanti वरुणःvaruṇaḥ सुदासेsudāse |

तस्मिन्नाtasminnā तोकंtokaṃ तनयंtanayaṃ दधानाdadhānā माmā कर्मkarma देवहेळनंdevaheḷanaṃ तुरासःturāsaḥ ||

When Aditi and Varuṇa and Mitra, like guardians, give Sudās their friendly shelter,
Granting him sons and lineal succession, let us not, bold ones! move the Gods to anger.
7.60.8

अवava वेदिंvediṃ होत्राभिर्यजेतhotrābhiryajeta रिपःripaḥ काश्चिदkāścid वरुणध्रुतःvaruṇadhrutaḥ सःsaḥ |

परिpari दवेषोभिरर्यमाdveṣobhiraryamā वर्णक्तूरुंvṛṇaktūruṃ सुदासेsudāse वर्षणाvṛṣaṇā उu लोकमlokam ||

May he with ofierings purify the altar from any stains of Varuṇa's reviler.
Aryaman save us us all those who hate us: give room and freedom to Sudās, ye Mighty.
7.60.9

सस्वश्चिदsasvaścid धिdhi सम्र्तिस्त्वेष्येषामपीच्येनsamṛtistveṣyeṣāmapīcyena सहसाsahasā सहन्तेsahante |

युष्मदyuṣmad भियाbhiyā वर्षणोvṛṣaṇo रेजमानाrejamānā दक्षस्यdakṣasya चिनcin महिनाmahinā मर्ळताmṛḷatā नःnaḥ ||

Hid from our eyes is their resplendent meeting: by their mysterious might they hold dominion.
Heroes! we cry trembling in fear before you, even in the greatness of your power have mercy.
7.60.10

योyo बरह्मणेbrahmaṇe सुमतिमायजातेsumatimāyajāte वाजस्यvājasya सातौsātau परमस्यparamasya रायःrāyaḥ |

सीक्षन्तsīkṣanta मन्युंmanyuṃ मघवानोmaghavāno अर्यarya उरुuru कषयायkṣayāya चक्रिरेcakrire सुधातुsudhātu ||

He who wins favour for his prayer by worship, that he may gain him strength and highest riches,
That good man's mind the Mighty Ones will follow: they have brought comfort to his spacious dwelling.
7.60.11

इयंiyaṃ देवdeva पुरोहितिर्युवभ्यांpurohitiryuvabhyāṃ यज्ञेषुyajñeṣu मित्रावरुणावकारिmitrāvaruṇāvakāri |

विश्वानिviśvāni दुर्गाdurghā पिप्र्तंpipṛtaṃ तिरोtiro नोno यूयंyūyaṃ पातpāta ...... ||

This priestly task, Gods! Varuṇa and Mitra! hath been performed for you at sacrifices.
Convey us safely over every peril. Preserve us evermore, ye Gods, with blessings.
