HYMN LXVI MITRA-VARUṆA.


परpra मित्रयोर्वरुणयोःmitrayorvaruṇayoḥ सतोमोstomo नna एतुetu शूष्यःśūṣyaḥ |

नमस्वानnamasvān तुविजातयोःtuvijātayoḥ ||

LET our strong hymn of praise go forth, the laud of Mitra-Varuṇa,
With homage to that high-born Pair;
7.66.1

याyā धारयन्तdhārayanta देवाःdevāḥ सुदक्षाsudakṣā दक्षपितराdakṣapitarā |

असुर्यायasuryāya परमहसाpramahasā ||

The Two exceeding wise, the Sons of Dakṣa, whom the gods ordained
For lordship, excellently great.
7.66.2

ताtā नna सतिपाstipā तनूपाtanūpā वरुणvaruṇa जरितॄणामjaritṝṇām |

मित्रmitra साधयतंsādhayataṃ धियःdhiyaḥ ||

Such, Guardians of our homes and us, O Mitra-Varuṇa, fulfil
The thoughts of those who sing your praise.
7.66.3

यदद्यyadadya सूरsūra उदिते.अनागाudite.anāghā मित्रोmitro अर्यमाaryamā |

सुवातिsuvāti सविताभगःsavitābhaghaḥ ||

So when the Sun hath risen to-day, may sinless Mitra, Aryaman,
Bhaga, and Savitar sendus forth.
7.66.4

सुप्रावीरस्तुsuprāvīrastu सsa कषयःkṣayaḥ परpra नुnu यामनyāman सुदानवःsudānavaḥ |

येye नोno अंहो.अतिपिप्रतिaṃho.atipiprati ||

May this our home be guarded well forward, ye Bounteous, on the way,
Who bear us safely o’er distress.
7.66.5

उतuta सवराजोsvarājo अदितिरदब्धस्यaditiradabdhasya वरतस्यvratasya येye |

महोmaho राजानrājāna ईशतेīśate ||

And those Self-reigning, Aditi, whose statute is inviolate,
The Kings who rule a vast domain.
7.66.6

परतिprati वांvāṃ सूरsūra उदितेudite मित्रंmitraṃ गर्णीषेghṛṇīṣe वरुणमvaruṇam |

अर्यमणंरिशादसमaryamaṇaṃriśādasam ||

Soon as the Sun hath risen, to you, to Mitra-Varuṇa, I sing,
And Aryarnan who slays the foe.
7.66.7

रायाrāyā हिरण्ययाhiraṇyayā मतिरियमव्र्कायmatiriyamavṛkāya शवसेśavase |

इयंiyaṃ विप्रामेधसातयेviprāmedhasātaye ||

With wealth of gold may this my song bring unmolested power and might,
And, Brahmans, gain the sacrifice.
7.66.8

तेte सयामsyāma देवdeva वरुणvaruṇa तेte मित्रmitra सूरिभिःsūribhiḥ सहsaha |

इषंiṣaṃ सवश्चsvaśca धीमहिdhīmahi ||

May we be thine, God Varuṇa, and with our princes, Mitra, thine.
Food and Heaven's light will we obtain.
7.66.9

बहवःbahavaḥ सूरचक्षसो.अग्निजिह्वाsūracakṣaso.aghnijihvā रताव्र्धःṛtāvṛdhaḥ |

तरीणिtrīṇi येye येमुर्विदथानिyemurvidathāni धीतिभिर्विश्वानिdhītibhirviśvāni परिभूतिभिःparibhūtibhiḥ ||

Many are they who strengthen Law, Sun-eyed, with Agni for their tongue,
They who direct the three great gatherings with their thoughts, yea, all things with surpassing might.
7.66.10

विvi येye दधुःdadhuḥ शरदंśaradaṃ मासमादहर्यज्ञमक्तुंmāsamādaharyajñamaktuṃ चादcād रचमṛcam |

अनाप्यंanāpyaṃ वरुणोvaruṇo मित्रोmitro अर्यमाaryamā कषत्रंkṣatraṃ राजानrājāna आशतāśata ||

They who have stablished year and month and then the day, night, sacrifice and holy verse,
Varuṇa, Mitra, Aryarnan, the Kings, have won dominion which none else may gain.
7.66.11

तदtad वोvo अद्यadya मनामहेmanāmahe सूक्तैःsūktaiḥ सूरsūra उदितेudite |

यदोहतेyadohate वरुणोvaruṇo मित्रोmitro अर्यमाaryamā यूयंyūyaṃ रतस्यṛtasya रथ्यःrathyaḥ ||

So at the rising of the Sun we think of you with hymns to-day,
Even as Varuṇa, Mitra, Aryaman deserve: ye are the charioteers of Law.
7.66.12

रतावानṛtāvāna रतजाताṛtajātā रताव्र्धोṛtāvṛdho घोरासोghorāso अन्र्तद्विषःanṛtadviṣaḥ |

तेषांवःteṣāṃvaḥ सुम्नेsumne सुछर्दिष्टमेsuchardiṣṭame नरःnaraḥ सयामsyāma येye चca सूरयःsūrayaḥ ||

True to Law, born in Law the strengtheners of Law, terrible, haters of the false,
In their felicity which gives the best defence may we men and our princes dwell.
7.66.13

उदुudu तयदtyad दर्शतंdarśataṃ वपुर्दिवvapurdiva एतिeti परतिह्वरेpratihvare |

यदीमाशुर्वहतिyadīmāśurvahati देवdeva एतशोetaśo विश्वस्मैviśvasmai चक्षसेcakṣase अरमaram ||

Uprises, on the slope of heaven, that marvel that attracts die sight
As swift celestial Etaśa bears it away, prepared for every eye to see.
7.66.14

शीर्ष्णः-शीर्ष्णोśīrṣṇaḥ-śīrṣṇo जगतस्तस्थुषसjaghatastasthuṣas पतिंpatiṃ समयाsamayā विश्वमाviśvamā रजःrajaḥ |

सप्तsapta सवसारःsvasāraḥ सुवितायsuvitāya सूर्यंsūryaṃ वहन्तिvahanti हरितोharito रथेrathe ||

Lord of each single head, of fixt and moving things, equally through the whole expanse,
The Seven sister Bays bear Sūrya on his car, to bring us wealth and happiness.
7.66.15

तच्चक्षुर्देवहितंtaccakṣurdevahitaṃ शुक्रमुच्चरतśukramuccarat |

पश्येमpaśyema शरदःśaradaḥ शतंśataṃ जीवेमjīvema शरदःśaradaḥ शतमśatam ||

A hundred autumns may we see that bright Eye, God-ordained, arise
A hundred autumns may we live.
7.66.16

काव्येभिरदाभ्याkāvyebhiradābhyā यातंyātaṃ वरुणvaruṇa दयुमतdyumat |

मित्रश्चmitraśca सोमपीतयेsomapītaye ||

Infallible through your wisdom, come hither, resplendent Varuṇa,
And Mitra, to the Soma draught.
7.66.17

दिवोdivo धामभिर्वरुणdhāmabhirvaruṇa मित्रश्चाmitraścā यातमद्रुहाyātamadruhā |

पिबतंpibataṃ सोममातुजीsomamātujī ||

Come as the laws of Heaven ordain, Varuṇa, Mitra, void of guile:
Press near and drink the Soma juice.
7.66.18

आā यातंyātaṃ मित्रावरुणाmitrāvaruṇā जुषाणावाहुतिंjuṣāṇāvāhutiṃ नराnarā |

पातंpātaṃ सोमंsomaṃ रताव्र्धाṛtāvṛdhā ||

Come, Mitra, Varuṇa, accept, Heroes, our sacrificial gift:
Drink Soma, ye who strengthen Law.
