HYMN XCVI. SOMA PAVAMANA


परpra सेनानीःsenānīḥ शूरोśūro अग्रेaghre रथानांrathānāṃ गव्यन्नेतिghavyanneti हर्षतेharṣate अस्यasya सेनाsenā |

भद्रानbhadrān कर्ण्वन्निन्द्रहवानkṛṇvannindrahavān सखिभ्यsakhibhya आā सोमोsomo वस्त्राvastrā रभसानिrabhasāni दत्तेdatte ||

IN forefront of the cars forth goes the Hero, the Leader, winning spoil: his host rejoices.
Soma endues his robes of lasting colours, and blesses, for his friends, their calls on Indra.
9.96.1

समस्यsamasya हरिंhariṃ हरयोharayo मर्जन्त्यश्वहयैरनिशितंmṛjantyaśvahayairaniśitaṃ नमोभिःnamobhiḥ |

आā तिष्ठतिtiṣṭhati रथमिन्द्रस्यrathamindrasya सखाsakhā विद्वानेनाvidvānenā सुमतिंsumatiṃ यात्यछyātyacha ||

Men decked with gold adorn his golden tendril, incessantly with steed-impelling homage.
The Friend of Indra mounts his car well-knowing, he comes thereon to meet the prayer we offer.
9.96.2

सsa नोno देवdeva देवतातेdevatāte पवस्वpavasva महेmahe सोमsoma पसरसpsarasa इन्द्रपानःindrapānaḥ |

कर्ण्वन्नपोkṛṇvannapo वर्षयनvarṣayan दयामुतेमामुरोराdyāmutemāmurorā नोno वरिवस्याvarivasyā पुनानःpunānaḥ ||

O God, for service of the Gods flow onward, for food sublime, as Indra's drink, O Soma.
Making the floods, bedewing earth and heaven, come from the vast, comfort us while we cleanse thee
9.96.3

अजीतये.अहतयेajītaye.ahataye पवस्वpavasva सवस्तयेsvastaye सर्वतातयेsarvatātaye बर्हतेbṛhate |

तदुशन्तिtaduśanti विश्वviśva इमेime सखायस्तदहंsakhāyastadahaṃ वश्मिvaśmi पवमानpavamāna सोमsoma ||

Flow for prosperity and constant Vigour, flow on for happiness and high perfection.
This is the wish of these friends assembled: this is my wish, O Soma Pavamana.
9.96.4

सोमःsomaḥ पवतेpavate जनिताjanitā मतीनांmatīnāṃ जनिताjanitā दिवोdivo जनिताjanitā पर्थिव्याःpṛthivyāḥ |

जनिताग्नेर्जनिताjanitāghnerjanitā सूर्यस्यsūryasya जनितेन्द्रस्यjanitendrasya जनितोतjanitota विष्णोःviṣṇoḥ ||

Father of holy hymns, Soma flows onward the Father of the earth, Father of heaven:
Father of Agni, Sūrya's generator, the Father who begat Indra and Viṣṇu.
9.96.5

बरह्माbrahmā देवानांdevānāṃ पदवीःpadavīḥ कवीनांkavīnāṃ रषिर्विप्राणांṛṣirviprāṇāṃ महिषोम्र्गाणामmahiṣomṛghāṇām |

शयेनोśyeno गर्ध्राणांghṛdhrāṇāṃ सवधितिर्वनानांsvadhitirvanānāṃ सोमःsomaḥ पवित्रमत्येतिpavitramatyeti रेभनrebhan ||

Brahman of Gods, the Leader of the poets, Ṛṣi of sages, Bull of savage creatures,
Falcon amid the vultures, Axe of forests, over the cleansing sieve goes Soma singing.
9.96.6

परावीविपदprāvīvipad वाचvāca ऊर्मिंūrmiṃ नna सिन्धुर्गिरःsindhurghiraḥ सोमःsomaḥ पवमानोमनीषाःpavamānomanīṣāḥ |

अन्तःantaḥ पश्यनpaśyan वर्जनेमावराण्याvṛjanemāvarāṇyā तिष्ठतिtiṣṭhati वर्षभोvṛṣabho गोषुghoṣu जाननjānan ||

He, Soma Pavamana, like a river, hath stirred the wave of voice, our songs and praises.
Beholding these inferior powers in cattle, he rests among them as a Steer well-knowing.
9.96.7

सsa मत्सरःmatsaraḥ पर्त्सुpṛtsu वन्वन्नवातःvanvannavātaḥ सहस्ररेताsahasraretā अभिabhi वाजमर्षvājamarṣa |

इन्द्रायेन्दोindrāyendo पवमानोpavamāno मनीष्यंशोरूर्मिमीरयmanīṣyaṃśorūrmimīraya गाghā इषण्यनiṣaṇyan ||

As Gladdener, Warrior never harmed in battle, with thousand genial streams, pour strength and vigour.
As thoughtful Pavamana, urge O Indu, speeding the kine, the plant's wave on to Indra.
9.96.8

परिpari परियःpriyaḥ कलशेkalaśe देववातdevavāta इन्द्रायindrāya सोमोsomo रण्योraṇyo मदायmadāya |

सहस्रधारःsahasradhāraḥ शतवाजśatavāja इन्दुर्वाजीindurvājī नna सप्तिःsaptiḥ समनाsamanā जिगातिjighāti ||

Dear, grateful to the Gods, on to the beaker moves Soma, sweet to Indra, to delight him.
With hundred powers, with thousand currents, Indu, like a strong car-horse, goes to the assembly.
9.96.9

सsa पूर्व्योpūrvyo वसुविज्जायमानोvasuvijjāyamāno मर्जानोmṛjāno अप्सुapsu दुदुहानोduduhāno अद्रौadrau |

अभिशस्तिपाabhiśastipā भुवनस्यbhuvanasya राजाrājā विददvidad गातुंghātuṃ बरह्मणेbrahmaṇe पूयमानःpūyamānaḥ ||

Born in old time as finder-out of treasures, drained with the stone, decking himself in waters,
Warding off curses, King of all existence, he shall find way for prayer the while they cleanse him.
9.96.10

तवयाtvayā हिhi नःnaḥ पितरःpitaraḥ सोमsoma पूर्वेpūrve कर्माणिkarmāṇi चक्रुःcakruḥ पवमानधीराःpavamānadhīrāḥ |

वन्वन्नवातःvanvannavātaḥ परिधीन्रपोर्णुparidhīnraporṇu वीरेभिरश्वैर्मघवाvīrebhiraśvairmaghavā भवाbhavā नःnaḥ ||

For our sage fathers, Soma Pavamana, of old performed, by thee, their sacred duties.
Fighting unvanquished, open the enclosures: enrich us with large gifts of steeds and heroes.
9.96.11

यथापवथाyathāpavathā मनवेmanave वयोधाvayodhā अमित्रहाamitrahā वरिवोविदvarivovid धविष्मानdhaviṣmān |

एवाevā पवस्वpavasva दरविणंdraviṇaṃ दधानdadhāna इन्द्रेindre संsaṃ तिष्ठtiṣṭha जनयायुधानिjanayāyudhāni ||

As thou didst flow for Manu Life-bestowing, Foe-queller, Comforter, rich in oblations,
Even thus flow onward now conferring riches: combine with Indra, and bring forth thy weapons.
9.96.12

पवस्वpavasva सोमsoma मधुमानmadhumān रतावापोṛtāvāpo वसानोvasāno अधिadhi सानोsāno अव्येavye |

अवava दरोणानिdroṇāni घर्तवान्तिghṛtavānti सीदsīda मदिन्तमोmadintamo मत्सरmatsara इन्द्रपानःindrapānaḥ ||

Flow onward, Soma, rich in sweets and holy,. enrobed in waters on the fleecy summit.
Settle in vessels that are full of fatness, as cheering and most gladdening drink for Indra.
9.96.13

वर्ष्टिंvṛṣṭiṃ दिवःdivaḥ शतधारःśatadhāraḥ पवस्वpavasva सहस्रसाsahasrasā वाजयुर्देववीतौvājayurdevavītau |

संsaṃ सिन्धुभिःsindhubhiḥ कलशेkalaśe वावशानःvāvaśānaḥ समुस्रियाभिःप्रतिरनsamusriyābhiḥpratiran नna आयुःāyuḥ ||

Pour, hundred-streamed, winner of thousands, mighty at the Gods’ banquet, Pour the rain of heaven,
While thou with rivers roarest in the beaker, and blent with milk prolongest our existence.
9.96.14

एषeṣa सयsya सोमोsomo मतिभिःmatibhiḥ पुनानो.अत्योpunāno.atyo नna वाजीvājī तरतीदरातीःtaratīdarātīḥ |

पयोpayo नna दुग्धमदितेरिषिरमुर्विवdughdhamaditeriṣiramurviva गातुःghātuḥ सुयमोनsuyamona वोळहाvoḷhā ||

Purified with our holy hymns, this Soma o’ertakes malignities like some strong charger,
Like fresh milk poured by Aditi, like passage in ample room, or like a docile car-horse.
9.96.15

सवायुधःsvāyudhaḥ सोत्र्भिःsotṛbhiḥ पूयमानो.अभ्यर्षpūyamāno.abhyarṣa गुह्यंghuhyaṃ चारुcāru नामnāma |

अभिabhi वाजंvājaṃ सप्तिरिवsaptiriva शरवस्याभिśravasyābhi वायुमभिvāyumabhi गाghā देवसोमdevasoma ||

Cleansed by the pressers, armed with noble weapons, stream to us the fair secret name thou bearest.
Pour booty, like a horse, for love of glory God, Soma, send us kine, and send us Vāyu.
9.96.16

शिशुंśiśuṃ जज्ञानंjajñānaṃ हर्यतंharyataṃ मर्जन्तिmṛjanti शुम्भन्तिśumbhanti वह्निंvahniṃ मरुतोmaruto गणेनghaṇena |

कविर्गीर्भिःkavirghīrbhiḥ काव्येनाkāvyenā कविःkaviḥ सनsan सोमःsomaḥ पवित्रमत्येतिpavitramatyeti रेभनrebhan ||

They deck him at his birth, the lovely Infant, the Maruts with their troop adorn the Car-horse.
By songs a Poet and a Sage by wisdom, Soma joes singing through the cleansing filter.
9.96.17

रषिमनाṛṣimanā यya रषिक्र्तṛṣikṛt सवर्षाःsvarṣāḥ सहस्रणीथःsahasraṇīthaḥ पदवीःpadavīḥ कवीनामkavīnām |

तर्तीयंtṛtīyaṃ धामdhāma महिषःmahiṣaḥ सिषासनsiṣāsan सोमोsomo विराजमनुराजतिvirājamanurājati षटुपṣṭup ||

Light-winner, Ṛṣi-mindcd, Ṛṣi-maker, hymned in a thousand hymns, Leader of sages,
A Steer who strives to gain his third form, Soma is, like Virāj, resplendent as a Singer.
9.96.18

चमूषच्छ्येनःcamūṣacchyenaḥ शकुनोśakuno विभ्र्त्वाvibhṛtvā गोविन्दुर्द्रप्सghovindurdrapsa आयुधानिबिभ्रतāyudhānibibhrat |

अपामूर्मिंapāmūrmiṃ सचमानःsacamānaḥ समुद्रंsamudraṃ तुरीयंturīyaṃ धाममहिषोdhāmamahiṣo विवक्तिvivakti ||

Hawk seated in the bowls, Bird wide-extended, the Banner seeking kine and wielding weapons,
Following close the sea, the wave of waters, the great Bull tells his fourth form and declares it.
9.96.19

मर्योmaryo नna शुभ्रस्तन्वंśubhrastanvaṃ मर्जानो.अत्योmṛjāno.atyo नna सर्त्वाsṛtvā सनयेsanaye धनानामdhanānām |

वर्षेवvṛṣeva यूथाyūthā परिpari कोशमर्षनkośamarṣan कनिक्रदच्चम्वोराविवेशkanikradaccamvorāviveśa ||

Like a fair youth who decorates his body, a courser rushing to the gain of riches,
A steer to herds, so, flowing to the pitcher, he with a roar hath passed into the beakers.
9.96.20

पवस्वेन्दोpavasvendo पवमानोpavamāno महोभिःmahobhiḥ कनिक्रदतkanikradat परिpari वाराण्यर्षvārāṇyarṣa |

करीळञ्चम्वोराkrīḷañcamvorā विशviśa पूयमानpūyamāna इन्द्रंindraṃ तेte रसोraso मदिरोmadiro ममत्तुmamattu ||

Flow on with might as Pavamana, Indu flow loudly roaring through the fleecy filter.
Enter the beakers sporting, as they cleanse thee, and let thy gladdening juice make Indra joyful.
9.96.21

परास्यprāsya धाराdhārā बर्हतीरस्र्ग्रन्नक्तोbṛhatīrasṛghrannakto गोभिःghobhiḥ कलशानाkalaśānā विवेशviveśa |

सामsāma कर्ण्वनkṛṇvan सामन्योsāmanyo विपश्चितvipaścit करन्दन्नेत्यभिkrandannetyabhi सख्युर्नsakhyurna जामिमjāmim ||

His streams have been effused in all their fulness, and he hath entered, balmed with milk, the goblets.
Singing his psalm, well-skilled in song, a Chanter, be comes as ’twere to his friend's sister roaring.
9.96.22

अपघ्नन्नेषिapaghnanneṣi पवमानpavamāna शत्रूनśatrūn परियांpriyāṃ नna जारोjāro अभिगीतabhighīta इन्दुःinduḥ |

सीदनsīdan वनेषुvaneṣu शकुनोśakuno नna पत्वाpatvā सोमःsomaḥ पुनानःpunānaḥ कलशेषुkalaśeṣu सत्ताsattā ||

Chasing our foes thou comest, Pavamana Indu, besting, as lover to his darling.
As a bird flies and settles in the forest, thus Soma settles, purified, in goblets.
9.96.23

आā तेte रुचःrucaḥ पवमानस्यpavamānasya सोमsoma योषेवyoṣeva यन्तिyanti सुदुघाःsudughāḥ सुधाराःsudhārāḥ |

हरिरानीतःharirānītaḥ पुरुवारोpuruvāro अप्स्वचिक्रदतapsvacikradat कलशेkalaśe देवयूनामdevayūnām ||

With full stream and abundant milk, O Soma, thy beams come, like a woman, as they cleanse thee.
He, gold-hued, rich in boons, brought to the waters, hath roared within the goblet of the pious.
9.96.24
