HYMN X. INDRA.


गायन्तिghāyanti तवाtvā गायत्रिणो.अर्चन्त्यर्कमर्किणःghāyatriṇo.arcantyarkamarkiṇaḥ |

बरह्माणस्त्वाbrahmāṇastvā शतक्रतśatakrata उदud वंशमिवvaṃśamiva येमिरेyemire ||

THE chanters hymn thee, they who say the word of praise magnify thee.
The priests have raised thee up on high, O Śatakratu, like a pole.
1.10.1

यतyat सानोःsānoḥ सानुमारुहदsānumāruhad भूर्यस्पष्टbhūryaspaṣṭa कर्त्वमkartvam |

तदिन्द्रोtadindro अर्थंarthaṃ चेततिcetati यूथेनyūthena वर्ष्णिरेजतिvṛṣṇirejati ||

As up he clomb from ridge to ridge and looked upon the toilsome task,
Indra observes this wish of his, and the Rain hastens with his troop.
1.10.2

युक्ष्वाyukṣvā हिhi केशिनाkeśinā हरीharī वर्षणाvṛṣaṇā कक्ष्यप्राkakṣyaprā |

अथाathā नna इन्द्रindra सोमपाsomapā गिरामुपश्रुतिंghirāmupaśrutiṃ चरcara ||

Harness thy pair of strong bay steeds, long-maned, whose bodies fill the girths,
And, Indra, Soma-drinker, come to listen to our songs of praise.
1.10.3

एहिehi सतोमानभिstomānabhi सवराभिsvarābhi गर्णीह्याghṛṇīhyā रुवruva |

बरह्मbrahma चca नोno वसोसचेन्द्रvasosacendra यज्ञंyajñaṃ चca वर्धयvardhaya ||

Come hither, answer thou the song, sing in approval, cry aloud.
Good Indra, make our prayer succeed, and prosper this our sacrifice.
1.10.4

उक्थमिन्द्रायukthamindrāya शंस्यंśaṃsyaṃ वर्धनंvardhanaṃ पुरुनिष्षिधेpuruniṣṣidhe |

शक्रोśakro यथाyathā सुतेषुsuteṣu णोṇo रारणतrāraṇat सख्येषुsakhyeṣu चca ||

To Indra must a laud be said, to strengthen him who freely gives,
That Śakra may take pleasure in our friendship and drink-offerings.
1.10.5

तमितtamit सखित्वsakhitva ईमहेīmahe तंtaṃ रायेrāye तंtaṃ सुवीर्येsuvīrye |

सsa शक्रśakra उतuta नःnaḥ शकदिन्द्रोśakadindro वसुvasu दयमानःdayamānaḥ ||

Him, him we seek for friendship, him for riches and heroic might.
For Indra, he is Śakra, he shall aid us while he gives us wealth.
1.10.6

सुविव्र्तंsuvivṛtaṃ सुनिरजमिन्द्रsunirajamindra तवादातमिदtvādātamid यशःyaśaḥ |

गवामपव्रजंghavāmapavrajaṃ वर्धिvṛdhi कर्णुष्वkṛṇuṣva राधोrādho अद्रिवःadrivaḥ ||

Easy to turn and drive away, Indra, is spoil bestowed by thee.
Unclose the stable of the kine, and give us wealth O Thunder-armed
1.10.7

नहिnahi तवाtvā रोदसीrodasī उभेubhe रघायमाणमिन्वतःṛghāyamāṇaminvataḥ |

जेषःjeṣaḥ सवर्वतीरपःsvarvatīrapaḥ संsaṃ गाghā अस्मभ्यंasmabhyaṃ धूनुहिdhūnuhi ||

The heaven and earth contain thee not, together, in thy wrathful mood.
Win us the waters of the sky, and send us kine abundantly.
1.10.8

आश्रुत्कर्णāśrutkarṇa शरुधीśrudhī हवंhavaṃ नूnū चिदcid दधिष्वdadhiṣva मेme गिरःghiraḥ |

इन्द्रindra सतोममिमंstomamimaṃ ममmama कर्ष्वाkṛṣvā युजश्चिदन्तरमyujaścidantaram ||

Hear, thou whose ear is quick, my call; take to thee readily my songs
O Indra, let this laud of mine come nearer even than thy friend.
1.10.9

विद्माvidmā हिhi तवाtvā वर्षन्तमंvṛṣantamaṃ वाजेषुvājeṣu हवनश्रुतमhavanaśrutam |

वर्षन्तमस्यvṛṣantamasya हूमहhūmaha ऊतिंūtiṃ सहस्रसातमामsahasrasātamām ||

We know thee mightiest of all, in battles hearer of our cry.
Of thee most mighty we invoke the aid that giveth thousandfold.
1.10.10

आā तूtū नna इन्द्रindra कौशिकkauśika मन्दसानःmandasānaḥ सुतंsutaṃ पिबpiba |

नव्यमायुःप्रnavyamāyuḥpra सूsū तिरtira कर्धीkṛdhī सहस्रसांsahasrasāṃ रषिमṛṣim ||

O Indra, Son of Kuśika, drink our libation with delight.
Prolong our life anew, and cause the seer to win a thousand gifts.
1.10.11

परिpari तवाtvā गिर्वणोghirvaṇo गिरghira इमाimā भवन्तुbhavantu विश्वतःviśvataḥ |

वर्द्धायुमनुvṛddhāyumanu वर्द्धयोvṛddhayo जुष्टाjuṣṭā भवन्तुbhavantu जुष्टयःjuṣṭayaḥ ||

Lover of song, may these our songs on every side encompass thee:
Strengthening thee of lengthened life, may they be dear delights to thee.
