HYMN XI. INDRA.


इन्द्रंindraṃ विश्वाviśvā अवीव्र्धनavīvṛdhan समुद्रव्यचसंsamudravyacasaṃ गिरःghiraḥ |

रथीतमंरथीनांrathītamaṃrathīnāṃ वाजानांvājānāṃ सत्पतिंsatpatiṃ पतिमpatim ||

ALL sacred songs have magnified Indra expansive as the sea,
The best of warriors borne on cars, the Lord, the very Lord of strength.
1.11.1

सख्येsakhye तta इन्द्रindra वाजिनोvājino माmā भेमbhema शवससśavasas पतेpate |

तवामभिtvāmabhi परणोनुमोpraṇonumo जेतारमपराजितमjetāramaparājitam ||

Strong in thy friendship, Indra, Lord of power and might, we have no fear.
We glorify with praises thee, the never-conquered conqueror.
1.11.2

पूर्वीरिन्द्रस्यpūrvīrindrasya रातयोrātayo नna विvi दस्यन्त्यूतयःdasyantyūtayaḥ |

यदीyadī वाजस्यvājasya गोमतghomata सतोत्र्भ्योstotṛbhyo मंहतेmaṃhate मघमmagham ||

The gifts of Indra from of old, his saving succours, never fail,
When to the praise-singers he gives the boon of substance rich in kine.
1.11.3

पुरांpurāṃ भिन्दुर्युवाbhinduryuvā कविरमितौजाkaviramitaujā अजायतajāyata |

इन्द्रोindro विश्वस्यकर्मणोviśvasyakarmaṇo धर्ताdhartā वज्रीvajrī पुरुष्टुतःpuruṣṭutaḥ ||

Crusher of forts, the young, the wise, of strength unmeasured, was he born
Sustainer of each sacred rite, Indra, the Thunderer, much-extolled.
1.11.4

तवंtvaṃ वलस्यvalasya गोमतो.अपावरद्रिवोghomato.apāvaradrivo बिलमbilam |

तवांtvāṃ देवाdevā अबिभ्युषस्तुज्यमानासabibhyuṣastujyamānāsa आविषुःāviṣuḥ ||

Lord of the thunder, thou didst burst the cave of Vala rich in cows.
The Gods came pressing to thy side, and free from terror aided thee,

तवाहंtavāhaṃ शूरśūra रातिभिःrātibhiḥ परत्यायंpratyāyaṃ सिन्धुमावदनsindhumāvadan |

उपातिष्ठन्तupātiṣṭhanta गिर्वणोghirvaṇo विदुषviduṣ टेṭe तस्यtasya कारवःkāravaḥ ||

I, Hero, through thy bounties am come to the flood addressing thee.
Song-lover, here the singers stand and testify to thee thereof.
1.11.6

मायाभिरिन्द्रmāyābhirindra मायिनंmāyinaṃ तवंtvaṃ शुष्णमवातिरःśuṣṇamavātiraḥ |

विदुषviduṣ टेṭe तस्यtasya मेधिरास्तेषांmedhirāsteṣāṃ शरवांस्युतśravāṃsyut तिरtira ||

The wily Śuṣṇa, Indra! thou o’erthrewest with thy wondrous powers.
The wise beheld this deed of thine: now go beyond their eulogies.
1.11.7

इन्द्रमीशानमोजसाभिindramīśānamojasābhi सतोमाstomā अनूषतanūṣata |

सहस्रंsahasraṃ यस्यyasya रातयrātaya उतuta वाvā सन्तिsanti भूयसीःbhūyasīḥ ||

Our songs of praise have glorified Indra who ruleth by his might,
Whose precious gifts in thousands come, yea, even more abundantly.
