HYMN CXX. AŚVINS.


काkā राधदrādhad धोत्राश्विनाdhotrāśvinā वांvāṃ कोko वांvāṃ जोषjoṣa उभयोःubhayoḥ |

कथाkathā विधात्यप्रचेताःvidhātyapracetāḥ ||

AŚVINS, what praise may win your grace? Who may be pleasing to you both?
How shall the ignorant worship you?
1.120.1

विद्वांसाविदvidvāṃsāvid दुरःduraḥ पर्छेदविद्वानित्थापरोpṛchedavidvānitthāparo अचेताःacetāḥ |

नूnū चिनcin नुnu मर्तेmarte अक्रौakrau ||

Here let the ignorant ask the means of you who know—for none beside you knoweth aught—
Not of a spiritless mortal man.
1.120.2

ताtā विद्वांसाvidvāṃsā हवामहेhavāmahe वांvāṃ ताtā नोno विद्वांसाvidvāṃsā मन्मmanma वोचेतमद्यvocetamadya |

परार्चदprārcad दयमानोdayamāno युवाकुःyuvākuḥ ||

Such as ye: are, all-wise, we call you. Ye wise, declare to us this day accepted prayer.
Loving you well your servant lauds you.
1.120.3

विvi पर्छामिpṛchāmi पाक्याpākyā नna देवानdevān वषट्क्र्तस्याद्भुतस्यvaṣaṭkṛtasyādbhutasya दस्राdasrā |

पातंpātaṃ चca सह्यसोsahyaso युवंyuvaṃ चca रभ्यसोrabhyaso नःnaḥ ||

Simply, ye Mighty Ones, I ask the Gods of that wondrous oblation hallowed by the mystic word.
Save us from what is stronger, fiercer than ourselves.
1.120.4

परpra याyā घोषेghoṣe भर्गवाणेbhṛghavāṇe नna शोभेśobhe ययाyayā वाचाvācā यजतिyajati पज्रियोpajriyo वामvām |

परैषयुर्नpraiṣayurna विद्वानvidvān ||

Forth go the hymn that shone in Ghoṣā Bhṛgu's like, the song wherewith the son of Pajra worships you,
Like some wise minister.
1.120.5

शरुतंśrutaṃ गायत्रंghāyatraṃ तकवानस्याहंtakavānasyāhaṃ चिदcid धिdhi रिरेभाश्विनाrirebhāśvinā वामvām |

आक्षीākṣī शुभसśubhas पतीpatī दनdan ||

Hear ye the song of him who hastens speedily. O Aśvins, I am he who sang your praise.
Hither, ye Lords of Splendour, hither turn your eyes.
1.120.6

युवंyuvaṃ हयास्तंhyāstaṃ महोmaho रनran युवंyuvaṃ वाvā यनyan निरततंसतमniratataṃsatam |

तानोtāno वसूvasū सुगोपाsughopā सयातंsyātaṃ पातंpātaṃ नोno वर्कादघायोःvṛkādaghāyoḥ ||

For ye were ever nigh to deal forth ample wealth, to give the wealth that ye had gathered up.
As such, ye Vasus, guard us well, and keep us safely from the wicked wolf.
1.120.7

माmā कस्मैkasmai धातमभ्यमित्रिणेdhātamabhyamitriṇe नोno माकुत्राmākutrā नोno गर्हेभ्योghṛhebhyo धेनवोdhenavo गुःghuḥ |

सतनाभुजोstanābhujo अशिश्वीःaśiśvīḥ ||

Give us not up to any man who hateth us, nor let our milch-cows stray, whose udders give us food,
Far from our homes without their calves.
1.120.8

दुहीयनduhīyan मित्रधितयेmitradhitaye युवाकुyuvāku रायेrāye चca नोno मिमीतंmimītaṃ वाजवत्यैvājavatyai |

इषेiṣe चca नोno मिमीतंmimītaṃ धेनुमत्यैdhenumatyai ||

May they who love you gain you for their Friends. Prepare ye us for opulence with strengthening food,
Prepare us for the food that floweth from our cows
1.120.9

अश्विनोरसनंaśvinorasanaṃ रथमनश्वंrathamanaśvaṃ वाजिनावतोःvājināvatoḥ |

तेनाहंtenāhaṃ भूरिbhūri चाकनcākana ||

I have obtained the horseless car of Aśvins rich in sacrifice,
And I am well content therewith.
1.120.10

अयंayaṃ समहsamaha माmā तनूह्यातेtanūhyāte जनाननुjanānanu |

सोमपेयंsomapeyaṃ सुखोsukho रथःrathaḥ ||

May it convey me evermore: may the light chariot pass from men
To men unto the Soma draught.
1.120.11

अधadha सवप्नस्यsvapnasya निर्विदे.अभुञ्जतश्चnirvide.abhuñjataśca रेवतःrevataḥ |

उभाubhā ताtā बस्रिbasri नश्यतःnaśyataḥ ||

It holdeth slumber in contempt. and the rich who enjoyeth not:
Both vanish quickly and are lost.
