HYMN XIII. AGNI


सुसमिद्धोsusamiddho नna आā वहvaha देवानग्नेdevānaghne हविष्मतेhaviṣmate |

होतःhotaḥ पावकpāvaka यक्षिyakṣi चca ||

AGNI, well-kindled, bring the Gods for him who offers holy gifts.
Worship them, Purifier, Priest.
1.13.1

मधुमन्तंmadhumantaṃ तनूनपादtanūnapād यज्ञंyajñaṃ देवेषुdeveṣu नःnaḥ कवेkave |

अद्याadyā कर्णुहिkṛṇuhi वीतयेvītaye ||

Son of Thyself, present, O Sage, our sacrifice to the Gods today.
Sweet to the taste, that they may feast.
1.13.2

नराशंसमिहnarāśaṃsamiha परियमस्मिनpriyamasmin यज्ञyajña उपupa हवयेhvaye |

मधुजिह्वंहविष्क्र्तमmadhujihvaṃhaviṣkṛtam ||

Dear Narāśaṁsa, sweet of tongue, the giver of oblations, I
Invoke to this our sacrifice.
1.13.3

अग्नेaghne सुखतमेsukhatame रथेrathe देवानीळितdevānīḷita आā वहvaha |

असिasi होताhotā मनुर्हितःmanurhitaḥ ||

Agni, on thy most easy car, glorified, hither bring the Gods:
Manu appointed thee as Priest.
1.13.4

सत्र्णीतstṛṇīta बर्हिरानुषगbarhirānuṣagh घर्तप्र्ष्ठंghṛtapṛṣṭhaṃ मनीषिणःmanīṣiṇaḥ |

यत्राम्र्तस्यyatrāmṛtasya चक्षणमcakṣaṇam ||

Strew, O ye wise, the sacred grass that drips with oil, in order due,
Where the Immortal is beheld.
1.13.5

विvi शरयन्तांśrayantāṃ रताव्र्धोṛtāvṛdho दवारोdvāro देवीरसश्चतःdevīrasaścataḥ |

अद्याadyā नूनंnūnaṃ चca यष्टवेyaṣṭave ||

Thrown open be the Doors Divine, unfailing, that assist the rite,
For sacrifice this day and now.
1.13.6

नक्तोषासाnaktoṣāsā सुपेशसास्मिनsupeśasāsmin यज्ञyajña उपupa हवयेhvaye |

इदंidaṃ नोno बर्हिरासदेbarhirāsade ||

I call the lovely Night and Dawn to seat them on the holy grass
At this our solemn sacrifice.
1.13.7

ताtā सुजिह्वाsujihvā उपupa हवयेhvaye होताराhotārā दैव्याdaivyā कवीkavī |

यज्ञंyajñaṃ नोno यक्षतामिममyakṣatāmimam ||

The two Invokers I invite, the wise, divine and sweet of tongue,
To celebrate this our sacrifice.
1.13.8

इळाiḷā सरस्वतीsarasvatī महीmahī तिस्रोtisro देवीर्मयोभुवःdevīrmayobhuvaḥ |

बर्हिःbarhiḥ सीदन्त्वस्रिधःsīdantvasridhaḥ ||

Iḷā, Sarasvatī, Mahī, three Goddesses who bring delight,
Be seated, peaceful, on the grass.
1.13.9

इहiha तवष्टारमग्रियंtvaṣṭāramaghriyaṃ विश्वरूपमुपviśvarūpamupa हवयेhvaye |

अस्माकमस्तुकेवलःasmākamastukevalaḥ ||

Tvaṣṭar I call, the earliest born, the wearer of all forms at will:
May he be ours and ours alone.
1.13.10

अवava सर्जाsṛjā वनस्पतेvanaspate देवdeva देवेभ्योdevebhyo हविःhaviḥ |

परpra दातुरस्तुdāturastu चेतनमcetanam ||

God, Sovran of the Wood, present this our oblation to the Gods,
And let the giver be renowned.
1.13.11

सवाहाsvāhā यज्ञंyajñaṃ कर्णोतनेन्द्रायkṛṇotanendrāya यज्वनोyajvano गर्हेghṛhe |

तत्रtatra देवानुपdevānupa हवयेhvaye ||

With Svāhā pay the sacrifice to Indra in the offerer's house:
Thither I call the Deities.
