HYMN CXXXIII. INDRA.


उभेubhe पुनामिpunāmi रोदसीrodasī रतेनṛtena दरुहोdruho दहामिdahāmi संsaṃ महीरनिन्द्राःmahīranindrāḥ |

अभिव्लग्यabhivlaghya यत्रyatra हताhatā अमित्राamitrā वैलस्थानंvailasthānaṃ परिpari तर्ळ्हाtṛḷhā अशेरनaśeran ||

WITH sacrifice I purge both earth and heaven: I burn up great she-fiends who serve not Indra,
Where throttled by thy hand the foes were slaughtered, and in the pit of death lay pierced and mangled.
1.133.1

अभिव्लग्याabhivlaghyā चिदद्रिवःcidadrivaḥ शीर्षाśīrṣā यातुमतीनामyātumatīnām |

छिन्धिchindhi वटूरिणाvaṭūriṇā पदाpadā महावटूरिणाmahāvaṭūriṇā पदाpadā ||

O thou who castest forth the stones crushing the sorceresses’ heads,
Break them with thy wide-spreading foot, with thy wide-spreading mighty foot.
1.133.2

अवासांavāsāṃ मघवञmaghavañ जहिjahi शर्धोśardho यातुमतीनामyātumatīnām |

वैलस्थानकेvailasthānake अर्मकेarmake महावैलस्थेmahāvailasthe अर्मकेarmake ||

Do thou, O Maghavan, beat off these sorceresses' daring strength.
Cast them within the narrow pit. within the deep and narrow pit.
1.133.3

यासांyāsāṃ तिस्रःtisraḥ पञ्चाशतो.अभिव्लङगैरपावपःpañcāśato.abhivlaṅghairapāvapaḥ |

ततtat सुतेsute मनायतिmanāyati तकतtakat सुsu तेte मनायतिmanāyati ||

Of whom thou hast ere now destroyed thrice-fifty with thy fierce attacks.
That deed they count a glorious deed, though small to thee, a glorious deed.
1.133.4

पिशङगभ्र्ष्टिमम्भ्र्णंpiśaṅghabhṛṣṭimambhṛṇaṃ पिशाचिमिन्द्रpiśācimindra संsaṃ मर्णmṛṇa |

सर्वंरक्षोsarvaṃrakṣo निni बर्हयbarhaya ||

O Indra, crush and bray to bits the fearful fiery-weaponed fiend:
Strike every demon to the ground.

अवर्महavarmaha इन्द्रindra दाद्र्हिdādṛhi शरुधीśrudhī नःnaḥ शुशोचśuśoca हिhi दयौःdyauḥ कषानkṣāna भीषानद्रिवोbhīṣānadrivo घर्णानghṛṇān नna भीषानद्रिवःbhīṣānadrivaḥ | शुष्मिन्तमोśuṣmintamo हिhi शुष्मिभिर्वधैरुग्रेभिरीयसेśuṣmibhirvadhairughrebhirīyase |

अपूरुषघ्नोapūruṣaghno अप्रतीतapratīta शूरśūra सत्वभिस्त्रिसप्तैःsatvabhistrisaptaiḥ शूरśūra सत्वभिःsatvabhiḥ ||

Tear down the mighty ones. O Indra, hear thou us. For heaven hath glowed like earth in fear, O Thunder-armed, as dreading fierce heat, Thunder-armed!
Most Mighty mid the Mighty Ones thou speedest with strong bolts of death,
Not slaying men, unconquered Hero with the brave, O Hero, with the thrice-seven brave.

वनोतिvanoti हिhi सुन्वनsunvan कषयंkṣayaṃ परीणसःparīṇasaḥ सुन्वानोsunvāno हिhi षमाṣmā यजत्यवyajatyava दविषोdviṣo देवानामवdevānāmava दविषःdviṣaḥ | सुन्वानsunvāna इतit सिषासतिsiṣāsati सहस्राsahasrā वाज्यव्र्तःvājyavṛtaḥ |

सुन्वानायेन्द्रोsunvānāyendro ददात्याभुवंdadātyābhuvaṃ रयिंrayiṃ ददात्याभुवमdadātyābhuvam ||

The pourer of libations gains the home of wealth, pouring his gift conciliates hostilities, yea, the hostilities of Gods.
Pouring, he strives, unchecked and strong, to win him riches thousandfold.
Indra gives lasting wealth to him who pours forth gifts, yea, wealth he gives that long shall last.
