HYMN CXLII. ĀPRĪS.


समिद्धोsamiddho अग्नaghna आā वहvaha देवानद्यdevānadya यतस्रुचेyatasruce |

तन्तुंtantuṃ तनुष्वtanuṣva पूर्व्यंpūrvyaṃ सुतसोमायsutasomāya दाशुषेdāśuṣe ||

KINDLED, bring, Agni, Gods to-day for him who lifts the ladle up.
Spin out the ancient thread for him who sheds, with gifts, the Soma juice.
1.142.1

घर्तवन्तमुपghṛtavantamupa मासिmāsi मधुमन्तंmadhumantaṃ तनूनपातtanūnapāt |

यज्ञंyajñaṃ विप्रस्यviprasya मावतःmāvataḥ शशमानस्यśaśamānasya दाशुषःdāśuṣaḥ ||

Thou dealest forth, Tanūnapāt, sweet sacrifice enriched with oil,
Brought by a singer such as I who offers gifts and toils for thee.
1.142.2

शुचिःśuciḥ पावकोpāvako अद्भुतोadbhuto मध्वाmadhvā यज्ञंyajñaṃ मिमिक्षतिmimikṣati |

नराशंसःnarāśaṃsaḥ तरिराtrirā दिवोdivo देवोdevo देवेषुdeveṣu यज्ञियःyajñiyaḥ ||

He wondrous, sanctifying, bright, sprinkles the sacrifice with mead,
Thrice, Narāśaṁsa from the heavens, a God mid Gods adorable.
1.142.3

ईळितोīḷito अग्नaghna आā वहेन्द्रंvahendraṃ चित्रमिहcitramiha परियमpriyam |

इयंiyaṃ हिhi तवाtvā मतिर्ममाछाmatirmamāchā सुजिह्वsujihva वच्यतेvacyate ||

Agni, besought, bring hitherward Indra the Friend, the Wonderful,
For this my hymn of praise, O sweet of tongue, is chanted forth to thee.
1.142.4

सत्र्णानासोstṛṇānāso यतस्रुचोyatasruco बर्हिर्यज्ञेbarhiryajñe सवध्वरेsvadhvare |

वर्ञ्जेvṛñje देवव्यचस्तममिन्द्रायdevavyacastamamindrāya शर्मśarma सप्रथःsaprathaḥ ||

The ladle-holders strew trimmed grass at this well-ordered sacrifice;
A home for Indra is adorned, wide, fittest to receive the Gods.
1.142.5

विvi शरयन्तांśrayantāṃ रताव्र्धःṛtāvṛdhaḥ परयैprayai देवेभ्योdevebhyo महीःmahīḥ |

पावकासःpāvakāsaḥ पुरुस्प्र्होpuruspṛho दवारोdvāro देवीरसश्चतःdevīrasaścataḥ ||

Thrown open be the Doors Divine, unfailing, that assist the rite,
High, purifying, much-desired, so that the Gods may enter in.
1.142.6

आā भन्दमानेbhandamāne उपाकेupāke नक्तोषासाnaktoṣāsā सुपेशसाsupeśasā |

यह्वीyahvī रतश्यमातराṛtaśyamātarā सीदतांsīdatāṃ बर्हिराbarhirā सुमतsumat ||

May Night and Morning, hymned with lauds, united, fair to look upon,
Strong Mothers of the sacrifice, seat them together on the grass.
1.142.7

मन्द्रजिह्वाmandrajihvā जुगुर्वणीjughurvaṇī होताराhotārā दैव्याdaivyā कवीkavī |

यज्ञंyajñaṃ नोno यक्षतामिमंyakṣatāmimaṃ सिध्रमद्यsidhramadya दिविस्प्र्शमdivispṛśam ||

May the two Priests Divine, the sage, the sweet-voiced lovers of the hymn,
Complete this sacrifice of ours, effectual, reaching heaven to-day.
1.142.8

शुचिर्देवेष्वर्पिताśucirdeveṣvarpitā होत्राhotrā मरुत्सुmarutsu भारतीbhāratī |

इळाiḷā सरस्वतीsarasvatī महीmahī बर्हिःbarhiḥ सीदन्तुsīdantu यज्ञियाःyajñiyāḥ ||

Let Hotrā pure, set among Gods, amid the Maruts Bhāratī, Iḷā, Sarasvatī, Mahī, rest on the grass, adorable.
1.142.9

तनtan नस्तुरीपमद्भुतंnasturīpamadbhutaṃ पुरुpuru वारंvāraṃ पुरुpuru तमनाtmanā |

तवष्टापोषायtvaṣṭāpoṣāya विvi षयतुṣyatu रायेrāye नाभाnābhā नोno अस्मयुःasmayuḥ ||

May Tvaṣṭar send us genial dew abundant, wondrous, rich in gifts,
For increase and for growth of wealth, Tvaṣṭar our kinsman and our Friend.
1.142.10

अवस्र्जन्नुपavasṛjannupa तमनाtmanā देवानdevān यक्षिyakṣi वनस्पतेvanaspate |

अग्निर्हव्याaghnirhavyā सुषूदतिsuṣūdati देवोdevo देवेषुdeveṣu मेधिरःmedhiraḥ ||

Vanaspati, give forth, thyself, and call the Gods to sacrifice.
May Agni, God intelligent, speed our oblation to the Gods.
1.142.11

पूषण्वतेpūṣaṇvate मरुत्वतेmarutvate विश्वदेवायviśvadevāya वायवेvāyave |

सवाहाsvāhā गायत्रवेपसेghāyatravepase हव्यमिन्द्रायhavyamindrāya कर्तनkartana ||

To Vāyu joined with Pūṣan, with the Maruts, and the host of Gods,
To Indra who inspires the hymn cry Glory! and present the gift.
1.142.12

सवाहाक्र्तान्याsvāhākṛtānyā गह्युपghahyupa हव्यानिhavyāni वीतयेvītaye |

इन्द्राindrā गहिghahi शरुधीśrudhī हवंhavaṃ तवांtvāṃ हवन्तेhavante अध्वरेadhvare ||

Come hither to enjoy the gifts prepared with cry of Glory! Come,
O Indra, hear their calling; they invite thee to the sacrifice.
