यदyad वाजिनोvājino देवजतस्यdevajatasya सप्तेःsapteḥ परवक्ष्यामोpravakṣyāmo विदथेvidathe वीर्याणिvīryāṇi ||
SLIGHT us not Varuṇa, Aryaman, or Mitra, Ṛbhukṣan, Indra, Āyu, or the Maruts,
When we declare amid the congregation the virtues of the strong Steed, God-descended.
1.162.1
यनyan निर्णिजाnirṇijā रेक्णसाrekṇasā पराव्र्तस्यprāvṛtasya रतिंratiṃ गर्भीतांghṛbhītāṃ मुखतोmukhato नयन्तिnayanti |

सुप्रनजोsupranajo मेम्यदmemyad विश्वरूपviśvarūpa इन्द्रापूष्णोःindrāpūṣṇoḥ परियमप्येतिpriyamapyeti पाथःpāthaḥ ||
What time they bear before the Courser, covered with trappings and with wealth, the grasped oblation,
The dappled goat goeth straightforward, bleating, to the place dear to Indra and to Pūṣan.
1.162.2
एषeṣa छागःchāghaḥ पुरोpuro अश्वेनaśvena वाजिनाvājinā पूष्णोpūṣṇo भागोbhāgho नीयतेnīyate विश्वदेव्यःviśvadevyaḥ |

अभिप्रियंabhipriyaṃ यतyat पुरोळाशमर्वताpuroḷāśamarvatā तवष्टेदेनंtvaṣṭedenaṃ सौश्रवसायsauśravasāya जिन्वतिjinvati ||
Dear to all Gods, this goat, the share of Pūṣan, is first led forward with the vigorous Courser,
While Tvaṣṭar sends him forward with the Charger, acceptable for sacrifice, to glory.
1.162.3
यदyad धविष्यंdhaviṣyaṃ रतुशोṛtuśo देवयानंdevayānaṃ तरिर्मानुषाःtrirmānuṣāḥ पर्यश्वंparyaśvaṃ नयन्तिnayanti |

अत्राatrā पूष्णःpūṣṇaḥ परथमोprathamo भागbhāgha एतिeti यज्ञंyajñaṃ देवेभ्यःdevebhyaḥ परतिवेदयन्नजःprativedayannajaḥ ||
When thrice the men lead round the Steed, in order, who goeth to the Gods as meet oblation,
The goat precedeth him, the share of Pūṣan, and to the Gods the sacrifice announceth.
1.162.4
होताध्वर्युरावयाhotādhvaryurāvayā अग्निमिन्धोaghnimindho गरावग्राभghrāvaghrābha उतuta शंस्ताśaṃstā सुविप्रःsuvipraḥ |

तेनtena यज्ञेनyajñena सवरंक्र्तेनsvaraṃkṛtena सविष्टेनsviṣṭena वक्षणाvakṣaṇā आप्र्णध्वमāpṛṇadhvam ||
Invoker, ministering priest, atoner, fire-kindler Soma-presser, sage, reciter,
With this well ordered sacrifice, well finished, do ye fill full the channels of the rivers.
1.162.5
यूपव्रस्काyūpavraskā उतuta येye यूपवाहाश्चषालंyūpavāhāścaṣālaṃ येye अश्वयूपायaśvayūpāya तक्षतिtakṣati |

येye चार्वतेcārvate पचनंpacanaṃ सम्भरन्त्युतोsambharantyuto तेषामभिगूर्तिर्नteṣāmabhighūrtirna इन्वतुinvatu ||
The hewers of the post and those who carry it, and those who carve the knob to deck the Horse's stake;
Those who prepare the cooking-vessels for the Steed,—may the approving help of these promote our work.
1.162.6
उपupa परागातprāghāt सुमनsuman मे.अधायिme.adhāyi मन्मmanma देवानामाशाdevānāmāśā उपupa वीतप्र्ष्ठःvītapṛṣṭhaḥ |

अन्वेनंanvenaṃ विप्राviprā रषयोṛṣayo मदन्तिmadanti देवानांdevānāṃ पुष्टेpuṣṭe चक्र्माcakṛmā सुबन्धुमsubandhum ||
Forth, for the regions of the Gods, the Charger with his smooth back is come my prayer attends him.
In him rejoice the singers and the sages. A good friend have we won for the Gods’ banquet.
1.162.7
यदyad वाजिनोvājino दामdāma सुन्दानमर्वतोsundānamarvato याyā शीर्षण्याśīrṣaṇyā रशनारज्जुरस्यraśanārajjurasya |

यदyad वाvā घास्यghāsya परभ्र्तमास्येprabhṛtamāsye तर्णंtṛṇaṃ सर्वाsarvā ताtā तेte अपिapi देवेष्वस्तुdeveṣvastu ||
May the fleet Courser's halter and his heel-ropes, the head-stall and the girths and cords about him.
And the grass put within his mouth to bait him,—among the Gods, too, let all these be with thee.
1.162.8
यदश्वस्यyadaśvasya करविषोkraviṣo मक्षिकाशmakṣikāśa यदyad वाvā सवरौsvarau सवधितौsvadhitau रिप्तमस्तिriptamasti |

यदyad धस्तयोःdhastayoḥ शमितुर्यनśamituryan नखेषुnakheṣu सर्वाsarvā ताtā तेte अपिapi देवेष्वस्तुdeveṣvastu ||
What part of the Steed's flesh the fly hath eaten, or is left sticking to the post or hatchet,
Or to the slayer's hands and nails adhereth,—among the Gods, too, may all this be with thee.
1.162.9
यदूवध्यमुदरस्यापवातिyadūvadhyamudarasyāpavāti यya आमस्यāmasya करविषोkraviṣo गन्धोghandho अस्तिasti |

सुक्र्ताsukṛtā तच्छमितारःtacchamitāraḥ कर्ण्वन्तूतkṛṇvantūta मेधंmedhaṃ शर्तपाकंśṛtapākaṃ पचन्तुpacantu ||
Food undigested steaming from his belly, and any odour of raw flesh remaining,
This let the immolators set in order and dress the sacrifice with perfect cooking.
1.162.10
यतyat तेte गात्रादग्निनाghātrādaghninā पच्यमानादभिpacyamānādabhi शूलंśūlaṃ निहतस्यावधावतिnihatasyāvadhāvati |

माmā तदtad भूम्यामाbhūmyāmā शरिषनśriṣan माmā तर्णेषुtṛṇeṣu देवेभ्यस्तदुशद्भ्योdevebhyastaduśadbhyo रातमस्तुrātamastu ||
What from thy body which with fire is roasted, when thou art set upon the spit, distilleth,
Let not that lie on earth or grass neglected, but to the longing Gods let all be offered.
1.162.11
येye वाजिनंvājinaṃ परिपश्यन्तिparipaśyanti पक्वंpakvaṃ यya ईमाहुःīmāhuḥ सुरभिर्निर्हरेतिsurabhirnirhareti |

येye चार्वतोcārvato मांसभिक्षामुपासतmāṃsabhikṣāmupāsata उतोuto तेषामभिगूर्तिर्नteṣāmabhighūrtirna इन्वतुinvatu ||
They who observing that the Horse is ready call out and say, the smell is good; remove it;
And, craving meat, await the distribution,—may their approving help promote labour.
1.162.12
यनyan नीक्षणंnīkṣaṇaṃ मांस्पचन्याmāṃspacanyā उखायाukhāyā याyā पात्राणिpātrāṇi यूष्णासेचनानिyūṣṇaāsecanāni |

ऊष्मण्यापिधानाūṣmaṇyāpidhānā चरूणामङकाःcarūṇāmaṅkāḥ सूनाःपरिsūnāḥpari भूषन्त्यश्वमbhūṣantyaśvam ||
The trial-fork of the flesh-cooking caldron, the vessels out of which the broth is sprinkled,
The warming-pots, the covers of the dishes, hooks, carving-boards,—all these attend the Charger.
1.162.13
निक्रमणंnikramaṇaṃ निषदनंniṣadanaṃ विवर्तनंvivartanaṃ यच्चyacca पड्बीशमर्वतःpaḍbīśamarvataḥ |

यच्चyacca पपौpapau यच्चyacca घासिंghāsiṃ जघासjaghāsa सर्वाsarvā ताtā तेte अपिapi देवेष्वस्तुdeveṣvastu ||
The starting-place, his place of rest and rolling, the ropes wherewith the Charger's feet were fastened,
The water that he drank, the food he tasted,—among the Gods, too, may all these attend thee.
1.162.14
माmā तवाग्निर्ध्वनयीदtvāghnirdhvanayīd धूमगन्धिर्मोखाdhūmaghandhirmokhā भराजन्त्यभिbhrājantyabhi विक्तvikta जघ्रिःjaghriḥ |

इष्टंiṣṭaṃ वीतमभिगूर्तंvītamabhighūrtaṃ वषट्क्र्तंvaṣaṭkṛtaṃ तंtaṃ देवासःdevāsaḥ परतिprati गर्भ्णन्त्यश्वमghṛbhṇantyaśvam ||
Let not the fire, smoke-scented, make thee crackle, nor glowing caldron smell and break to pieces.
Offered, beloved, approved, and consecrated,—such Charger do the Gods accept with favour.
1.162.15
यदश्वायyadaśvāya वासvāsa उपस्त्र्णन्त्यधीवासंupastṛṇantyadhīvāsaṃ याyā हिरण्यान्यस्मैhiraṇyānyasmai |

सन्दानमर्वन्तंsandānamarvantaṃ पड्बीशंpaḍbīśaṃ परियाpriyā देवेष्वाdeveṣvā यामयन्तिyāmayanti ||
The robe they spread upon the Horse to clothe him, the upper covering and the golden trappings,
The halters which restrain the Steed, the heel-ropes,—all these, as grateful to the Gods, they offer.
1.162.16
यतyat तेte सादेsāde महसाmahasā शूक्र्तस्यśūkṛtasya पार्ष्ण्याpārṣṇyā वाvā कशयाkaśayā वाvā तुतोदtutoda |

सरुचेवsruceva ताtā हविषोhaviṣo अध्वरेषुadhvareṣu सर्वाsarvā ताtā तेte बरह्मणासूदयामिbrahmaṇāsūdayāmi ||
If one, when seated, with excessive urging hath with his heel or with his whip distressed thee,
All these thy woes, as with the oblations' ladle at sacrifices, with my prayer I banish.
1.162.17
चतुस्त्रिंशदcatustriṃśad वाजिनोvājino देवबन्धोर्वङकरीरश्वस्यdevabandhorvaṅkrīraśvasya सवधितिःसमेतिsvadhitiḥsameti |

अछिद्राachidrā गात्राghātrā वयुनाvayunā कर्णोतkṛṇota परुष-परुरनुघुष्यparuṣ-paruranughuṣya विvi शस्तśasta ||
The four-and-thirty ribs of the. Swift Charger, kin to the Gods, the slayer's hatchet pierces.
Cut ye with skill, so that the parts be flawless, and piece by piece declaring them dissect them.
1.162.18
एकस्त्वष्तुरश्वस्याekastvaṣturaśvasyā विशस्ताviśastā दवाdvā यन्ताराyantārā भवतस्तथर्तुःbhavatastathaṛtuḥ |

याyā तेte गात्राणांghātrāṇāṃ रतुथाṛtuthā कर्णोमिkṛṇomi ता-ताtā-tā पिण्डनांpiṇḍanāṃ परpra जुहोम्यग्नौjuhomyaghnau ||
Of Tvaṣṭar's Charger there is one dissector,—this is the custom-two there are who guide him.
Such of his limbs as I divide in order, these, amid the balls, in fire I offer.
1.162.19
माmā तवाtvā तपतtapat परियpriya आत्मापियन्तंātmāpiyantaṃ माmā सवधितिस्तन्वsvadhitistanva आā तिष्ठिपतtiṣṭhipat तेte |

माmā तेte गर्ध्नुरविशस्तातिहायghṛdhnuraviśastātihāya छिद्राchidrā गात्रण्यसिनाghātraṇyasinā मिथूmithū कःkaḥ ||
Let not thy dear soul burn thee as thou comest, let not the hatchet linger in thy body.
Let not a greedy clumsy immolator, missing the joints, mangle thy limbs unduly.
1.162.20
नna वाvā उu एतनetan मरियसेmriyase नna रिष्यसिriṣyasi देवानिदेषिdevānideṣi पथिभिःpathibhiḥ सुगेभिःsughebhiḥ |

हरीharī तेte युञ्जाyuñjā पर्षतीpṛṣatī अभूतामुपास्थादabhūtāmupāsthād वाजीvājī धुरिdhuri रासभस्यrāsabhasya ||
No, here thou diest not, thou art not injured: by easy paths unto the Gods thou goest.
Both Bays, both spotted mares are now thy fellows, and to the ass's pole is yoked the Charger.
1.162.21
सुगव्यंsughavyaṃ नोno वाजीvājī सवश्व्यंsvaśvyaṃ पुंसःpuṃsaḥ पुत्रानुतputrānuta विश्वापुषंviśvāpuṣaṃ रयिमrayim |

अनागास्त्वंanāghāstvaṃ नोno अदितिःaditiḥ कर्णोतुkṛṇotu कषत्रंkṣatraṃ नोno अश्वोaśvo वनतांvanatāṃ हविष्मानhaviṣmān ||
May this Steed bring us all-sustaining riches, wealth in good kine, good horses, manly offspring.
Freedom from sin may Aditi vouchsafe us: the Steed with our oblations gain us lordship!
