यदक्रन्दःyadakrandaḥ परथमंprathamaṃ जायमानjāyamāna उद्यनudyan समुद्रादुतsamudrāduta वाvā पुरीषातpurīṣāt |

शयेनस्यśyenasya पक्षाpakṣā हरिणस्यhariṇasya बाहूbāhū उपस्तुत्यंupastutyaṃ महिmahi जातंjātaṃ तेte अर्वनarvan ||
WHAT time, first springing into life, thou neighedst, proceeding from the sea or upper waters,
Limbs of the deer hadst thou, and eagle pinions. O Steed, thy birth is nigh and must be lauded.

यमेनyamena दत्तंdattaṃ तरितtrita एनमायुनगिन्द्रenamāyunaghindra एणंeṇaṃ परथमोprathamo अध्यतिष्ठतadhyatiṣṭhat |

गन्धर्वोghandharvo अस्यasya रशनामग्र्भ्णातraśanāmaghṛbhṇāt सूरादश्वंsūrādaśvaṃ वसवोvasavo निरतष्टnirataṣṭa ||
This Steed which Yama gave hath Trita harnessed, and him, the first of all, hath Indra mounted.
His bridle the Gandharva grasped. O Vasus, from out the Sun ye fashioned forth the Courser.

असिasi यमोyamo अस्यादित्योasyādityo अर्वन्नसिarvannasi तरितोtrito गुह्येनghuhyena वरतेनvratena |

असिasi सोमेनsomena समयाsamayā विप्र्क्तvipṛkta आहुस्तेāhuste तरीणिtrīṇi दिविdivi बन्धनानिbandhanāni ||
Yama art thou, O Horse; thou art Āditya; Trita art thou by secret operation.
Thou art divided thoroughly from Soma. They say thou hast three bonds in heaven
that hold thee.

तरीणिtrīṇi तta आहुर्दिविāhurdivi बन्धनानिbandhanāni तरीण्यप्सुtrīṇyapsu तरीण्यन्तःtrīṇyantaḥ समुद्रेsamudre |

उतेवuteva मेme वरुणश्चन्त्स्यर्वनvaruṇaścantsyarvan यत्राyatrā तta आहुःāhuḥ परमंparamaṃ जनित्रमjanitram ||
Three bonds, they say, thou hast in heaven that bind thee, three in the waters,
three within the ocean.
To me thou seemest Varuṇa, O Courser, there where they say is thy sublimest birth-place.
1.163.4
इमाimā तेte वाजिन्नवमार्जनानीमाvājinnavamārjanānīmā शफानांśaphānāṃ सनितुर्निधानाsaniturnidhānā |

अत्राatrā तेte भद्राbhadrā रशनाraśanā अपश्यंapaśyaṃ रतस्यṛtasya याyā अभिरक्षन्तिगोपाःabhirakṣantighopāḥ ||
Here-, Courser, are the places where they groomed thee, here are the traces of thy hoofs as winner.
Here have I seen the auspicious reins that guide thee, which those who guard the holy Law keep safely.
1.163.5
आत्मानंātmānaṃ तेte मनसारादजानामवोmanasārādajānāmavo दिवाdivā पतयन्तंpatayantaṃ पतंगमpataṃgham |

शिरोśiro अपश्यंapaśyaṃ पथिभिःpathibhiḥ सुगेभिररेणुभिर्जेहमानंsughebhirareṇubhirjehamānaṃ पतत्रिpatatri ||
Thyself from far I recognized in spirit,—a Bird that from below flew through the heaven.
I saw thy head still soaring, striving upward by paths unsoiled by dust, pleasant to travel.

अत्राatrā तेte रूपमुत्तममपश्यंrūpamuttamamapaśyaṃ जिगीषमाणमिषjighīṣamāṇamiṣa आā पदेगोःpadeghoḥ |

यदाyadā तेte मर्तोmarto अनुanu भोगमानळbhoghamānaḷ आदिदādid गरसिष्ठghrasiṣṭha ओषधीरजीगःoṣadhīrajīghaḥ ||
Here I beheld thy form, matchless in glory, eager to win thee food at the Cow's station.
Whene’er a man brings thee to thine enjoyment, thou swallowest the plants most greedy eater.
1.163.7
अनुanu तवाtvā रथोratho अनुanu मर्योmaryo अर्वन्ननुarvannanu गावो.अनुghāvo.anu भगःbhaghaḥ कनीनामkanīnām |

अनुanu वरातासस्तवvrātāsastava सख्यमीयुरनुsakhyamīyuranu देवाdevā ममिरेmamire वीर्यंvīryaṃ तेte ||
After thee, Courser, come the car, the bridegroom, the kine come after, and the charm of maidens.
Full companies have followed for thy friendship: the pattern of thy vigour Gods have copied.
1.163.8
हिरण्यश्र्ङगो.अयोhiraṇyaśṛṅgho.ayo अस्यasya पादाpādā मनोजवाmanojavā अवरavara इन्द्रindra आसीतāsīt |

देवाdevā इदस्यidasya हविरद्यमायनhaviradyamāyan योyo अर्वन्तंarvantaṃ परथमोprathamo अध्यतिष्ठतadhyatiṣṭhat ||
Horns made of gold hath he: his feet are iron: less fleet than he, though swift as thought, is Indra.
The Gods have come that they may taste the oblation of him who mounted, first of all, the Courser.
1.163.9
ईर्मान्तासःīrmāntāsaḥ सिलिकमध्यमासःsilikamadhyamāsaḥ संsaṃ शूरणासोśūraṇāso दिव्यासोdivyāso अत्याःatyāḥ |

हंसाhaṃsā इवiva शरेणिशोśreṇiśo यतन्तेyatante यदाक्षिषुर्दिव्यमज्ममश्वाःyadākṣiṣurdivyamajmamaśvāḥ ||
Symmetrical in flank, with rounded haunches, mettled like heroes, the Celestial Coursers
Put forth their strength, like swans in lengthened order, when they, the Steeds, have reached the heavenly causeway.
1.163.10
तवtava शरीरंśarīraṃ पतयिष्ण्वर्वनpatayiṣṇvarvan तवtava चित्तंcittaṃ वातvāta इवiva धरजीमानdhrajīmān |

तवtava शर्ङगाणिśṛṅghāṇi विष्ठिताviṣṭhitā पुरुत्रारण्येषुpurutrāraṇyeṣu जर्भुराणाjarbhurāṇā चरन्तिcaranti ||
A body formed for flight hast thou, O Charger; swift as the wind in motion is thy spirit.
Thy horns are spread abroad in all directions: they move with restless beat in wildernesses.
1.163.11
उपupa परागाच्छसनंprāghācchasanaṃ वाज्यर्वाvājyarvā देवद्रीचाdevadrīcā मनसाmanasā दीध्यानःdīdhyānaḥ |

अजःajaḥ पुरोpuro नीयतेnīyate नाभिरस्यानुnābhirasyānu पश्चातpaścāt कवयोkavayo यन्तिरेभाःyantirebhāḥ ||
The strong Steed hath come forward to the slaughter, pondering with a mind directed God-ward.
The goat who is his kin is led before him the sages and the singers follow after.
1.163.12
उपupa परागातprāghāt परमंparamaṃ यतyat सधस्थमर्वानछाsadhasthamarvānachā पितरंpitaraṃ मातरंmātaraṃ चca |

अद्याadyā देवाञdevāñ जुष्टतमोjuṣṭatamo हिhi गम्याghamyā अथाathā शास्तेśāste दाशुषेdāśuṣe वार्याणिvāryāṇi ||
The Steed is come unto the noblest mansion, is come unto his Father and his Mother.
This day shall he approach the Gods, most welcome: then he declares good gifts to him who offers.
