HYMN XXVIII. INDRA, OTHERS.


यत्रyatra गरावाghrāvā पर्थुबुध्नpṛthubudhna ऊर्ध्वोūrdhvo भवतिbhavati सोतवेsotave |

उलूखलसुतानामवेदulūkhalasutānāmaved विन्द्रvindra जल्गुलःjalghulaḥ ||

THERE where the broad-based stone raised on high to press the juices out,
O Indra, drink with eager thirst the droppings which the mortar sheds.
1.28.1

यत्रyatra दवाविवdvāviva जघनाधिषवण्याjaghanādhiṣavaṇyā कर्ताkṛtā |

उलूखलसुतानामवेदulūkhalasutānāmaved विन्द्रvindra जल्गुलःjalghulaḥ ||

Where, like broad hips, to hold the juice the platters of the press are laid,
O Indra, drink with eager thirst the droppings which the mortar sheds.
1.28.2

यत्रyatra नार्यपच्यवमुपच्यवंnāryapacyavamupacyavaṃ चca शिक्षतेśikṣate |

उलूखलसुतानामवेदulūkhalasutānāmaved विन्द्रvindra जल्गुलःjalghulaḥ ||

There where the woman marks and leans the pestle's constant rise and fall,
O Indra, drink with eager thirst the droppings which the mortar sheds.
1.28.3

यत्रyatra मन्थांmanthāṃ विबध्नतेvibadhnate रश्मीनraśmīn यमितवाyamitavā इवiva |

उलूखलसुतानामवेदulūkhalasutānāmaved विन्द्रvindra जल्गुलःjalghulaḥ ||

Where, as with reins to guide a horse, they bind the churning-staff with cords,
O Indra, drink with eager thirst the droppings which the mortar sheds.
1.28.4

यच्चिदyaccid धिdhi तवंtvaṃ गर्हेग्र्हghṛheghṛha उलूखलकulūkhalaka युज्यसेyujyase |

इहiha दयुमत्तमंdyumattamaṃ वदvada यजतामिवyajatāmiva दुन्दुभिःdundubhiḥ ||

If of a truth in every house, O Mortar thou art set for work,
Here give thou forth thy clearest sound, loud as the drum of conquerors.

उतuta समsma तेte वनस्पतेvanaspate वातोvāto विvi वात्यग्रमितvātyaghramit |

अथोatho इन्द्रायindrāya पातवेpātave सुनुsunu सोममुलूखलsomamulūkhala ||

O Sovran of the Forest, as the wind blows soft in front of thee,
Mortar, for Indra press thou forth the Soma juice that he may drink.

आयजीāyajī वाजसातमाvājasātamā ताtā हयुच्चाhyuccā विजर्भ्र्तःvijarbhṛtaḥ |

हरीharī इवान्धांसिivāndhāṃsi बप्सताbapsatā ||

Best strength-givers, ye stretch wide jaws, O Sacrificial Implements,
Like two bay horses champing herbs.

ताtā नोno अद्यadya वनस्पतीvanaspatī रष्वावṛṣvāv रष्वेभिःṛṣvebhiḥ सोत्र्भिःsotṛbhiḥ |

इन्द्रायindrāya मधुमतmadhumat सुतमsutam ||

Ye Sovrans of the Forest, both swift, with swift pressers press to-day
Sweet Soma juice for Indra's drink.
1.28.8

उच्छिष्टंucchiṣṭaṃ चम्वोर्भरcamvorbhara सोमंsomaṃ पवित्रpavitra आā सर्जsṛja |

निni धेहिdhehi गोरधिghoradhi तवचिtvaci ||

Take up in beakers what remains: the Soma on the filter pour,
and on the ox-hide set the dregs.
