HYMN XXXVIII. MARUTS.


कदkad धdha नूनंnūnaṃ कधप्रियःkadhapriyaḥ पिताpitā पुत्रंputraṃ नna हस्तयोःhastayoḥ |

दधिध्वेdadhidhve वर्क्तबर्हिषःvṛktabarhiṣaḥ ||

WHAT now? When will ye take us by both hands, as a dear sire his son,
Gods, for whom sacred grass is clipped?
1.38.1

कवkva नूनंnūnaṃ कदkad वोvo अर्थंarthaṃ गन्ताghantā दिवोdivo नna पर्थिव्याःpṛthivyāḥ |

कवkva वोvo गावोghāvo नna रण्यन्तिraṇyanti ||

Now whither? To what goal of yours go ye in heaven, and not on earth?
Where do your cows disport themselves?
1.38.2

कवkva वःvaḥ सुम्नाsumnā नव्यांसिnavyāṃsi मरुतःmarutaḥ कवkva सुविताsuvitā |

कवkv विश्वानिviśvāni सौभगाsaubhaghā ||

Where are your newest favours shown? Where, Maruts, your prosperity?
Where all your high felicities?
1.38.3

यदyad यूयमyūyam पर्श्निमातरोpṛśnimātaro मर्तासःmartāsaḥ सयातनsyātana |

सतोताstotā वोvo अम्र्तःamṛtaḥ सयातsyāt ||

If, O ye Maruts, ye the Sons whom Pṛśni bore, were mortal, and
Immortal he who sings your praise.
1.38.4

माmā वोvo मर्गोmṛgho नna यवसेyavase जरिताjaritā भूदbhūd अजोष्यःajoṣyaḥ |

पथाpathā यमस्यyamasya गादghād उपupa ||

Then never were your praiser loathed like a wild beast in pasture-land,
Nor should he go on Yama's path.
1.38.5

मोmo षुṣu णःṇaḥ परा-पराparā-parā निर्र्तिरnirṛtir दुर्हणाdurhaṇā वधीतvadhīt |

पदीष्टpadīṣṭa तर्ष्णयाtṛṣṇayā सहsaha ||

Let not destructive plague on plague hard to be conquered, strike its down:
Let each, with drought, depart from us.
1.38.6

सत्यंsatyaṃ तवेषाtveṣā अमवन्तोamavanto धन्वञdhanvañ चिदcid आā रुद्रियासःrudriyāsaḥ |

मिहंmihaṃ कर्ण्वन्त्यkṛṇvanty अवातामavātām ||

Truly, they the fierce and mighty Sons of Rudra send their windless
Rain e’en on the desert places.
1.38.7

वाश्रेवvāśreva विद्युनvidyun मिमातिmimāti वत्संvatsaṃ नna माताmātā सिषक्तिsiṣakti |

यदyad एषांeṣāṃ वर्ष्टिरvṛṣṭir असर्जिasarji ||

Like a cow the lightning lows and follows, motherlike, her youngling,
When their rain-flood hath been loosened.
1.38.8

दिवाdivā चितcit तमःtamaḥ कर्ण्वन्तिkṛṇvanti पर्जन्येनोदवाहेनparjanyenodavāhena |

यतyat पर्थिवींpṛthivīṃ वयुन्दन्तिvyundanti ||

When they inundate the earth they spread forth darkness e’en in day time,
With the water-laden rain-cloud.
1.38.9

अधadha सवनानsvanān मरुतांmarutāṃ विश्वमviśvam आā सद्मsadma पार्थिवमpārthivam |

अरेजन्तarejanta परpra मानुषाःmānuṣāḥ ||

O Maruts, at your voice's sound this earthly habitation shakes,
And each man reels who dwells therein.
1.38.10

मरुतोmaruto वीळुपाणिभिशvīḷupāṇibhiś चित्राcitrā रोधस्वतीरrodhasvatīr अनुanu |

यातेमyātem अखिद्रयामभिःakhidrayāmabhiḥ ||

O Maruts, with your strong-hoofed steeds, unhindered in their courses, haste
Along the bright embanked streams.
1.38.11

सथिराsthirā वःvaḥ सन्तुsantu नेमयोnemayo रथाrathā अश्वासaśvāsa एषामeṣām |

सुसंस्क्र्ताsusaṃskṛtā अभीशवःabhīśavaḥ ||

Firm be the fellies of your wheels, steady your horses and your cars,
And may your reins be fashioned well.
1.38.12

अछाachā वदाvadā तनाtanā गिराghirā जरायैjarāyai बरह्मणसbrahmaṇas पतिमpatim |

अग्निमaghnim मित्रंmitraṃ नna दर्शतमdarśatam ||

Invite thou hither with this song, for praise, Agni the Lord of Prayer,
Him who is fair as Mitra is.
1.38.13

मिमीहिmimīhi शलोकमślokam आस्यपर्जन्यāsyaparjanya इवiva ततनःtatanaḥ |

गायghāya गायत्रमghāyatram उक्थ्यमukthyam ||

Form in thy mouth the hymn of praise expand thee like, a rainy cloud
Sing forth the measured eulogy.
1.38.14

वन्दस्वvandasva मारुतंmārutaṃ गणंghaṇaṃ तवेषमtveṣam पनस्युमpanasyum अर्किणमarkiṇam |

अस्मेasme वर्द्धाvṛddhā असन्नasann इहiha ||

Sing glory to the Marut host, praiseworthy, tuneful, vigorous:
Here let the Strong Ones dwell with us.
