परpra यदyad इत्थाitthā परावतःparāvataḥ शोचिरśocir नna मानमmānam अस्यथasyatha |

कस्यkasya करत्वाkratvā मरुतःmarutaḥ कस्यkasya वर्पसाvarpasā कंkaṃ याथyātha कंkaṃ हha धूतयःdhūtayaḥ ||
WHEN thus, like flame, from far away, Maruts, ye cast your measure forth,
To whom go Ye, to whom, O shakers of the earth, moved by whose wisdom, whose design?
1.39.1
सथिराsthirā वःvaḥ सन्त्वsantv आयुधाāyudhā पराणुदेparāṇude वीळूvīḷū उतuta परतिष्कभेpratiṣkabhe |

युष्माकमyuṣmākam अस्तुastu तविषीtaviṣī पनीयसीpanīyasī माmā मर्त्यस्यmartyasya मायिनःmāyinaḥ ||
Strong let your weapons be to drive away your foes, firm for resistance let them be.
Yea, passing glorious must be your warrior might, not as a guileful mortal's strength.
1.39.2
पराparā हha यतyat सथिरंsthiraṃ हथhatha नरोnaro वर्तयथाvartayathā गुरुghuru |

विvi याथनyāthana वनिनःvaninaḥ पर्थिव्याpṛthivyā वयvy आशाःāśāḥ पर्वतानामparvatānām ||
When what is strong ye overthrow, and whirl about each ponderous thing,
Heroes, your course is through the forest trees of earth, and through the fissures of the rocks.
1.39.3
नहिnahi वःvaḥ शत्रुरśatrur विविदेvivide अधिadhi दयविdyavi नna भूम्यांbhūmyāṃ रिशादसःriśādasaḥ |

युष्माकमyuṣmākam अस्तुastu तविषीtaviṣī तनाtanā युजाyujā रुद्रासोrudrāso नूnū चिदcid आध्र्षेādhṛṣe ||
Consumers of your foes, no enemy of yours is found in heaven or on the earth:
Ye Rudras, may the strength, held in this bond, be yours, to bid defiance even now.
1.39.4
परpra वेपयन्तिvepayanti पर्वतानparvatān विvi विञ्चन्तिviñcanti वनस्पतीनvanaspatīn |

परोpro आरतārata मरुतोmaruto दुर्मदाdurmadā इवiva देवासःdevāsaḥ सर्वयाsarvayā विशाviśā ||
They make the mountains rock and reel, they rend the forest-kings apart.
Onward, ye Maruts, drive, like creatures drunk with wine, ye, Gods with all your company.
1.39.5
उपोupo रथेषुratheṣu पर्षतीरpṛṣatīr अयुग्ध्वमayughdhvam परष्टिरpraṣṭir वहतिvahati रोहितःrohitaḥ |

आā वोvo यामायyāmāya पर्थिवीpṛthivī चिदcid अश्रोदaśrod अबीभयन्तabībhayanta मानुषाःmānuṣāḥ ||
Ye to your chariot have yoked the spotted deer: a red deer, as a leader, draws.
Even the Earth herself listened as ye came near, and men were sorely terrified.
1.39.6
आā वोvo मक्षूmakṣū तनायtanāya कंkaṃ रुद्राrudrā अवोavo वर्णीमहेvṛṇīmahe |

गन्ताghantā नूनंnūnaṃ नोno ऽवसा'vasā यथाyathā पुरेत्थाpuretthā कण्वायkaṇvāya बिभ्युषेbibhyuṣe ||
O Rudras, quickly we desire your succour for this work of ours.
Come to us with your aid as in the days of old, so now for frightened Kaṇva's sake.
1.39.7
युष्मेषितोyuṣmeṣito मरुतोmaruto मर्त्येषितmartyeṣita आā योyo नोno अभ्वabhva ईषतेīṣate |

विvi तंtaṃ युयोतyuyota शवसाśavasā वयvy ओजसाojasā विvi युष्माकाभिरyuṣmākābhir ऊतिभिःūtibhiḥ ||
Should any monstrous foe, O Maruts, sent by you or sent by mortals threaten us,
Tear ye him from us with your power and with your might, and with the succours that are yours.
1.39.8
असामिasāmi हिhi परयज्यवःprayajyavaḥ कण्वंkaṇvaṃ ददdada परचेतसःpracetasaḥ |

असामिभिर्मरुतasāmibhirmaruta आā नna ऊतिभिर्गन्ताūtibhirghantā वर्ष्तिंvṛṣtiṃ नna विद्युतःvidyutaḥ ||
For ye, the worshipful and wise, have guarded Kaṇva perfectly.
O Maruts, come to us with full protecting help, as lightning flashes seek the rain.
1.39.9
असाम्योजोasāmyojo बिभ्र्थाbibhṛthā सुदानवो.असामिsudānavo.asāmi धूतयःdhūtayaḥ शवःśavaḥ |

रषिद्विषेṛṣidviṣe मरुतःmarutaḥ परिमन्यवparimanyava इषुंiṣuṃ नna सर्जतsṛjata दविषमdviṣam ||
Whole strength have ye, O Bounteous Ones; perfect, earth-shakers, is your might.
Maruts, against the poet's wrathful enemy send ye an enemy like a dart.
