HYMN XLI. VARUṆA, MITRA, ARYAMAN.


यंyaṃ रक्षन्तिrakṣanti परचेतसोpracetaso वरुणोvaruṇo मित्रोmitro अर्यमाaryamā |

नूnū चितcit सsa दभ्यतेdabhyate जनःjanaḥ ||

NE’ER is he injured whom the Gods Varuṇa, Mitra, Aryaman,
The excellently wise, protect.
1.41.1

यंyaṃ बाहुतेवbāhuteva पिप्रतिpiprati पान्तिpānti मर्त्यंmartyaṃ रिषःriṣaḥ |

अरिष्टःariṣṭaḥ सर्वsarva एधतेedhate ||

He prospers ever, free from scathe, whom they, as with full hands, enrich,
Whom they preserve from every foe.
1.41.2

विvi दुर्गाdurghā विvi दविषःdviṣaḥ पुरोpuro घनन्तिghnanti राजानrājāna एषामeṣām |

नयन्तिnayanti दुरिताduritā तिरःtiraḥ ||

The Kings drive far away from him his troubles and his enemies,
And lead him safely o’er distress.
1.41.3

सुगःsughaḥ पन्थाpanthā अन्र्क्षरanṛkṣara आदित्यासādityāsa रतंṛtaṃ यतेyate |

नात्रावखादोnātrāvakhādo अस्तिasti वःvaḥ ||

Thornless, Ādityas, is the path, easy for him who seeks the Law:
With him is naught to anger you.
1.41.4

यंyaṃ यज्ञंyajñaṃ नयथाnayathā नरnara आदित्याādityā रजुनाṛjunā पथाpathā |

परpra वःvaḥ सsa धीतयेdhītaye नशतnaśat ||

What sacrifice, Ādityas, ye Heroes guide by the path direct,—
May that come nigh unto your thought.
1.41.5

सsa रत्नंratnaṃ मर्त्योmartyo वसुvasu विश्वंviśvaṃ तोकमुतtokamuta तमनाtmanā |

अछाachā गछत्यस्त्र्तःghachatyastṛtaḥ ||

That mortal, ever unsubdued, gains wealth and every precious thing,
And children also of his own.
1.41.6

कथाkathā राधामrādhāma सखायःsakhāyaḥ सतोमंstomaṃ मित्रस्यार्यम्णःmitrasyāryamṇaḥ |

महिmahi पसरोpsaro वरुणस्यvaruṇasya ||

How, my friends, shall we prepare Aryaman's and Mitra's laud,
Glorious food of Varuṇa?
1.41.7

माmā वोvo घनन्तंghnantaṃ माmā शपन्तंśapantaṃ परतिprati वोचेvoce देवयन्तमdevayantam |

सुम्नैरिदsumnairid वva आā विवासेvivāse ||

I point not out to you a man who strikes the pious, or reviles:
Only with hymns I call you nigh.
1.41.8

चतुरश्चिदcaturaścid ददमानादdadamānād बिभीयादाbibhīyādā निधातोःnidhātoḥ |

नna दुरुक्तायduruktāya सप्र्हयेतspṛhayet ||

Let him not love to speak ill words: but fear the One who holds all four
Within his hand, until they fall.
1.41.9
