HYMN XLVIII. DAWN.


सहsaha वामेनvāmena नna उषोuṣo वयुछाvyuchā दुहितर्दिवःduhitardivaḥ |

सहsaha दयुम्नेनdyumnena बर्हताbṛhatā विभावरिvibhāvari रायाrāyā देविdevi दास्वतीdāsvatī ||

DAWN on us with prosperity, O Uṣas, Daughter of the Sky,
Dawn with great glory, Goddess, Lady of the Light, dawn thou with riches, Bounteous One.
1.48.1

अश्वावतीर्गोमतीर्विश्वसुविदोaśvāvatīrghomatīrviśvasuvido भूरिbhūri चयवन्तcyavanta वस्तवेvastave |

उदीरयudīraya परतिprati माmā सून्र्ताsūnṛtā उषश्चोदuṣaścoda राधोrādho मघोनामmaghonām ||

They, bringing steeds and kine, boon-givers of all wealth, have oft sped forth to lighten us.
O Uṣas, waken up for me the sounds of joy: send us the riches of the great.
1.48.2

उवासोषाuvāsoṣā उछाच्चuchācca नुnu देवीdevī जीराjīrā रथानामrathānām |

येye अस्याasyā आचरणेषुācaraṇeṣu दध्रिरेdadhrire समुद्रेsamudre नna शरवस्यवःśravasyavaḥ ||

Uṣas hath dawned, and now shall dawn, the Goddess, driver forth of cars
Which, as she cometh nigh, have fixed their thought on her, like glory-seekers on the flood.
1.48.3

उषोuṣo येye तेte परpra यामेषुyāmeṣu युञ्जतेyuñjate मनोmano दानायdānāya सूरयःsūrayaḥ |

अत्राहatrāha ततtat कण्वkaṇva एषांeṣāṃ कण्वतमोkaṇvatamo नामnāma गर्णातिghṛṇāti नर्णामnṛṇām ||

Here Kaṇva, chief of Kaṇva's race, sings forth aloud the glories of the heroes’ names,—
The. princes who, O Uṣas, as thou comest near, direct their thoughts to liberal gifts.
1.48.4

आā घाghā योषेवyoṣeva सूनर्युषाsūnaryuṣā यातिyāti परभुञ्जतीprabhuñjatī |

जरयन्तीjarayantī वर्जनंvṛjanaṃ पद्वदीयतpadvadīyata उतut पातयतिpātayati पक्षिणःpakṣiṇaḥ ||

Like a good matron Uṣas comes carefully tending everything:
Rousing all life she stirs all creatures that have feet, and makes the birds of air fly up.
1.48.5

विvi याyā सर्जतिsṛjati समनंsamanaṃ वयर्थिनःvyarthinaḥ पदांpadāṃ नna वेत्योदतीvetyodatī |

वयोvayo नकिषnakiṣ टेṭe पप्तिवांसpaptivāṃsa आसतेāsate वयुष्टौvyuṣṭau वाजिनीवतिvājinīvati ||

She sends the busy forth, each man to his pursuit: delay she knows not as she springs.
O rich in opulence, after thy dawning birds that have flown forth no longer rest.
1.48.6

एषायुक्तeṣāyukta परावतःparāvataḥ सूर्यस्योदयनादधिsūryasyodayanādadhi |

शतंśataṃ रथेभिःrathebhiḥ सुभगोषाsubhaghoṣā इयंiyaṃ विvi यात्यभिyātyabhi मानुषानmānuṣān ||

This Dawn hath yoked her steeds afar, beyond the rising of the Sun:
Borne on a hundred chariots she, auspicious Dawn, advances on her way to Men.
1.48.7

विश्वमस्याviśvamasyā नानामnānāma चक्षसेcakṣase जगज्ज्योतिषjaghajjyotiṣ कर्णोतिkṛṇoti सूनरीsūnarī |

अपapa दवेषोdveṣo मघोनीmaghonī दुहिताduhitā दिवdiva उषाuṣā उछदपuchadapa सरिधःsridhaḥ ||

To meet her glance all living creatures bend them down: Excellent One, she makes the light.
Uṣas, the Daughter of the Sky, the opulent, shines foes and enmities away.
1.48.8

उषuṣa आā भाहिbhāhi भानुनाbhānunā चन्द्रेणcandreṇa दुहितर्दिवःduhitardivaḥ |

आवहन्तीāvahantī भूर्यस्मभ्यंbhūryasmabhyaṃ सौभगंsaubhaghaṃ वयुछन्तीvyuchantī दिविष्टिषुdiviṣṭiṣu ||

Shine on us with thy radiant light, O Uṣas, Daughter of the Sky,
Bringing to us great store of high felicity, and beaming on our solemn rites.
1.48.9

विश्वस्यviśvasya हिhi पराणनंprāṇanaṃ जीवनंjīvanaṃ तवेtve विvi यदुछसिyaduchasi सूनरिsūnari |

साsā नोno रथेनrathena बर्हताbṛhatā विभावरिvibhāvari शरुधिśrudhi चित्रामघेcitrāmaghe हवमhavam ||

For in thee is each living creature's breath and life, when, Excellent! thou dawnest forth.
Borne on thy lofty car, O Lady of the Light, hear, thou of wondrous wealth, our call.
1.48.10

उषोuṣo वाजंvājaṃ हिhi वंस्वvaṃsva यश्चित्रोyaścitro मानुषेmānuṣe जनेjane |

तेनाtenā वहvaha सुक्र्तोsukṛto अध्वरानुपadhvarānupa येye तवाtvā गर्णन्तिghṛṇanti वह्नयःvahnayaḥ ||

O Uṣas, win thyself the strength which among men is wonderful.
Bring thou thereby the pious unto holy rites, those who as priests sing praise to thee.
1.48.11

विश्वानviśvān देवानाdevānā वहvaha सोमपीतये.अन्तरिक्षादुषस्त्वमsomapītaye.antarikṣāduṣastvam |

सास्मासुsāsmāsu धाdhā गोमदश्वावदुक्थ्यमुषोghomadaśvāvadukthyamuṣo वाजंvājaṃ सुवीर्यमsuvīryam ||

Bring from the firmament, O Uṣas, all the Gods, that they may drink our Soma juice,
And, being what thou art, vouchsafe us kine and steeds, strength meet for praise and hero might.
1.48.12

यस्याyasyā रुशन्तोruśanto अर्चयःarcayaḥ परतिprati भद्राbhadrā अद्र्क्षतadṛkṣata |

साsā नोno रयिंrayiṃ विश्ववारंviśvavāraṃ सुपेशसमुषाsupeśasamuṣā ददातुdadātu सुग्म्यमsughmyam ||

May Uṣas whose auspicious rays are seen resplendent round about,
Grant us great riches, fair in form, of all good things, wealth which light labour may attain.
1.48.13

येye चिदcid धिdhi तवांtvāṃ रषयःṛṣayaḥ पूर्वpūrva ऊतयेūtaye जुहूरे.अवसेjuhūre.avase महिmahi |

साsā नna सतोमानभिstomānabhi गर्णीहिghṛṇīhi राधसोषःrādhasoṣaḥ शुक्रेणśukreṇa शोचिषाśociṣā ||

Mighty One, whom the Ṛṣis of old time invoked for their protection and their help,
O Uṣas, graciously answer our songs of praise with bounty and with brilliant light.
1.48.14

उषोuṣo यदद्यyadadya भानुनाbhānunā विvi दवारावdvārāv रणवोṛṇavo दिवःdivaḥ |

परpra नोno यछतादव्र्कंyachatādavṛkaṃ पर्थुpṛthu छर्दिःchardiḥ परpra देविdevi गोमतीरिषःghomatīriṣaḥ ||

Uṣas, as thou with light to day hast opened the twin doors of heaven,
So grant thou us a dwelling wide and free from foes. O Goddess, give us food with kine.
1.48.15

संsaṃ नोno रायाrāyā बर्हताbṛhatā विश्वपेशसाviśvapeśasā मिमिक्ष्वाmimikṣvā समिळाभिराsamiḷābhirā |

संsaṃ दयुम्नेनdyumnena विश्वतुरोषोviśvaturoṣo महिmahi संsaṃ वाजैर्वाजिनीवतिvājairvājinīvati ||

Bring us to wealth abundant, sent in every shape, to plentiful refreshing food,
To all-subduing splendour, Uṣas, Mighty One, to strength, thou rich in spoil and wealth.
