HYMN LIII. INDRA.


नयूnyū षुṣu वाचंvācaṃ परpra महेmahe भरामहेbharāmahe गिरghira इन्द्रायindrāya सदनेsadane विवस्वतःvivasvataḥ |

नूnū चिदcid धिdhi रत्नंratnaṃ ससतामिवाविदनsasatāmivāvidan नna दुष्टुतिर्द्रविणोदेषुduṣṭutirdraviṇodeṣu शस्यतेśasyate ||

WE will present fair praise unto the Mighty One, our hymns to Indra in Vivasvān's dwelling-place;
For he hath ne’er found wealth in those who seem to sleep: those who give wealth to men accept no paltry praise.
1.53.1

दुरोduro अश्वस्यaśvasya दुरdura इन्द्रindra गोरसिghorasi दुरोduro यवस्यyavasya वसुनvasuna इनसinas पतिःpatiḥ |

शिक्षानरःśikṣānaraḥ परदिवोpradivo अकामकर्शनःakāmakarśanaḥ सखाsakhā सखिभ्यस्तमिदंsakhibhyastamidaṃ गर्णीमसिghṛṇīmasi ||

Giver of horses, Indra, giver, thou, of kine, giver of barley, thou art Lord and guard of wealth:
Man's helper from of old, not disappointing hope, Friend of our friends, to thee as such we sing this praise.
1.53.2

शचीवśacīva इन्द्रindra पुरुक्र्दpurukṛd दयुमत्तमdyumattama तवेदिदमभितश्चेकितेtavedidamabhitaścekite वसुvasu |

अतःataḥ संग्र्भ्याभिभूतsaṃghṛbhyābhibhūta आā भरbhara माmā तवायतोtvāyato जरितुःjarituḥ काममूनयीःkāmamūnayīḥ ||

Indra, most splendid, powerful, rich in mighty deeds, this treasure spread around is known to be thine own.
Gather therefrom, O Conqueror, and bring to us: fail not the hope of him who loves and sings to thee.
1.53.3

एभिर्द्युभिःebhirdyubhiḥ सुमनाsumanā एभिरिन्दुभिर्निरुन्धानोebhirindubhirnirundhāno अमतिंamatiṃ गोभिरश्विनाghobhiraśvinā |

इन्द्रेणindreṇa दस्युंdasyuṃ दरयन्तdarayanta इन्दुभिर्युतद्वेषसःसमिषाindubhiryutadveṣasaḥsamiṣā रभेमहिrabhemahi ||

Well pleased with these bright flames and with these Soma drops, take thou away our poverty with seeds and kine.
With Indra scattering the Dasyu through these drops, freed from their hate may we obtain abundant food.
1.53.4

समिन्द्रsamindra रायाrāyā समिषाsamiṣā रभेमहिrabhemahi संsaṃ वाजेभिःvājebhiḥ पुरुश्चन्द्रैरभिद्युभिःpuruścandrairabhidyubhiḥ |

संsaṃ देव्याdevyā परमत्याpramatyā वीरशुष्मयाvīraśuṣmayā गोग्रयाश्वावत्याghoaghrayāśvāvatyā रभेमहिrabhemahi ||

Let us obtain, O Indra, plenteous wealth and food, with strength exceeding glorious, shining to the sky:
May we obtain the Goddess Providence, the strength of heroes, special source of cattle, rich in steeds.
1.53.5

तेte तवाtvā मदाmadā अमदनamadan तानिtāni वर्ष्ण्याvṛṣṇyā तेte सोमासोsomāso वर्त्रहत्येषुvṛtrahatyeṣu सत्पतेsatpate |

यतyat कारवेkārave दशdaśa वर्त्राण्यप्रतिvṛtrāṇyaprati बर्हिष्मतेbarhiṣmate निni सहस्राणिsahasrāṇi बर्हयःbarhayaḥ ||

These our libations strength-inspiring, Soma draughts, gladdened thee in the fight with Vṛtra, Hero Lord,
What time thou slewest for the singer with trimmed grass ten thousand Vṛtras, thou resistless in thy might.
1.53.6

युधाyudhā युधमुपyudhamupa घेदेषिghedeṣi धर्ष्णुयाdhṛṣṇuyā पुराpurā पुरंpuraṃ समिदंsamidaṃ हंस्योजसाhaṃsyojasā |

नम्याnamyā यदिन्द्रyadindra सख्याsakhyā परावतिparāvati निबर्हयोnibarhayo नमुचिंnamuciṃ नामnāma मायिनमmāyinam ||

Thou goest on from fight to fight intrepidly, destroying castle after castle here with strength.
Thou, Indra, with thy friend who makes the foe bow down, slewest from far away the guileful Namuci.
1.53.7

तवंtvaṃ करञ्जमुतkarañjamuta पर्णयंparṇayaṃ वधीस्तेजिष्ठयातिथिग्वस्यवर्तनीvadhīstejiṣṭhayātithighvasyavartanī |

तवंtvaṃ शताśatā वङगर्दस्याभिनतvaṅghṛdasyābhinat पुरो.अनानुदःpuro.anānudaḥ परिषूताpariṣūtā रजिश्वनाṛjiśvanā ||

Thou hast struck down in death Karañja, Parṇaya, in Atithigva's very glorious going forth.
Unyielding, when Ṛjiśvan compassed them with siege, thou hast destroyed the hundred forts of Vaṅgṛida.
1.53.8

तवमेताञtvametāñ जनराज्ञोjanarājño दविर्दशाबन्धुनाdvirdaśābandhunā सुश्रवसोपजग्मुषःsuśravasopajaghmuṣaḥ |

षष्टिंṣaṣṭiṃ सहस्राsahasrā नवतिंnavatiṃ नवnava शरुतोśruto निni चक्रेणcakreṇa रथ्याrathyā दुष्पदाव्र्णकduṣpadāvṛṇak ||

With all-outstripping chariot-wheel, O Indra, thou far-famed, hast overthrown the twice ten Kings of men,
With sixty thousand nine-and-ninety followers, who came in arms to fight with friendless Suśravas.
1.53.9

तवमाविथtvamāvitha सुश्रवसंsuśravasaṃ तवोतिभिस्तवtavotibhistava तरामभिरिन्द्रtrāmabhirindra तूर्वयाणमtūrvayāṇam |

तवमस्मैtvamasmai कुत्समतिथिग्वमायुंkutsamatithighvamāyuṃ महेmahe राज्ञेrājñe यूनेyūne अरन्धनायःarandhanāyaḥ ||

Thou hast protected Suśravas with succour, and Tūrvayāṇa with thine aid, O Indra.
Thou madest Kutsa, Atithigva, Āyu, subject unto this King, the young, the mighty.
1.53.10

यya उद्र्चीन्द्रudṛcīndra देवगोपाःdevaghopāḥ सखायस्तेsakhāyaste शिवतमाśivatamā असामasāma |

तवांtvāṃ सतोषामstoṣāma तवयाtvayā सुवीराsuvīrā दराघीयdrāghīya आयुःāyuḥ परतरंprataraṃ दधानाःdadhānāḥ ||

May we protected by the Gods hereafter remain thy very prosperous friends, O Indra.
Thee we extol, enjoying through thy favour life long and joyful and with store of heroes.
