HYMN LXXI. AGNI.


उपupa परpra जिन्वन्नुशतीरुशन्तंjinvannuśatīruśantaṃ पतिंpatiṃ नna नित्यंnityaṃ जनयःjanayaḥ सनीळाःsanīḷāḥ |

सवसारःsvasāraḥ शयावीमरुषीमजुष्रञ्चित्रमुछन्तीमुषसंśyāvīmaruṣīmajuṣrañcitramuchantīmuṣasaṃ नna गावःghāvaḥ ||

LOVING the loving One, as wives their husband, the sisters of one home have urged him forward,
Bright-coloured, even, as the cows love morning, dark, breaking forth to view, and redly beaming.
1.71.1

वीळुvīḷu चिदcid दर्ळ्हाdṛḷhā पितरोpitaro नna उक्थैरद्रिंukthairadriṃ रुजन्नङगिरसोrujannaṅghiraso रवेणraveṇa |

चक्रुर्दिवोcakrurdivo बर्हतोbṛhato गातुमस्मेghātumasme अहःahaḥ सवर्विविदुःsvarvividuḥ केतुमुस्राःketumusrāḥ ||

Our sires with lauds burst e’en the firm-set fortress, yea, the Aṅgirases, with roar, the mountain.
They made for us a way to reach high heaven, they found us day, light, day's sign, beams of morning.
1.71.2

दधन्न्र्तंdadhannṛtaṃ धनयन्नस्यdhanayannasya धीतिमादिदर्योdhītimādidaryo दिधिष्वोdidhiṣvo विभ्र्त्राःvibhṛtrāḥ |

अत्र्ष्यन्तीरपसोatṛṣyantīrapaso यन्त्यछाyantyachā देवाञdevāñ जन्मjanma परयसाprayasā वर्धयन्तीःvardhayantīḥ ||

They stablished order, made his service fruitful; then parting them among the longing faithful,
Not thirsting after aught, they come, most active, while with sweet food the race of Gods they strengthen.
1.71.3

मथीदmathīd यदींyadīṃ विभ्र्तोvibhṛto मातरिश्वाmātariśvā गर्हे-गर्हेghṛhe-ghṛhe शयेतोśyeto जेन्योjenyo भूतbhūt |

आदींādīṃ राज्ञेrājñe नna सहीयसेsahīyase सचाsacā सन्नाsannā दूत्यंdūtyaṃ भर्गवाणोbhṛghavāṇo विवायvivāya ||

Since Mātariśvan, far-diffused, hath stirred him, and he in every house grown bright and noble,
He, Bhṛgu-like I hath gone as his companion, as on commission to a greater Sovran.
1.71.4

महेmahe यतyat पित्रpitra ईंīṃ रसंrasaṃ दिवेdive करवkarava तसरतtsarat पर्शन्यश्चिकित्वानpṛśanyaścikitvān |

सर्जदस्ताsṛjadastā धर्षताdhṛṣatā दिद्युमस्मैdidyumasmai सवायांsvāyāṃ देवोdevo दुहितरिduhitari तविषिंtviṣiṃ धातdhāt ||

When man poured juice to Heaven, the mighty Father, he knew and freed himself from close embracement.
The archer boldly shot at him his arrow, and the God threw his splendour on his Daughter.
1.71.5

सवsva आā यस्तुभ्यंyastubhyaṃ दमdama आā विभातिvibhāti नमोnamo वाvā दाशादुशतोdāśāduśato अनुanu दयूनdyūn |

वर्धोvardho अग्नेaghne वयोvayo अस्यasya दविबर्हाdvibarhā यासदyāsad रायाrāyā सरथंsarathaṃ यंyaṃ जुनासिjunāsi ||

Whoso, hath flames for thee within his dwelling, or brings the worship which thou lovest daily,
Do thou of double might increase his substance: may he whom thou incitest meet with riches.
1.71.6

अग्निंaghniṃ विश्वाviśvā अभिabhi पर्क्षःpṛkṣaḥ सचन्तेsacante समुद्रंsamudraṃ नna सरवतःsravataḥ सप्तsapta यह्वीःyahvīḥ |

नna जामिभिर्विjāmibhirvi चिकितेcikite वयोvayo नोno विदाvidā देवेषुdeveṣu परमतिंpramatiṃ चिकित्वानcikitvān ||

All sacrificial viands wait on Agni as the Seven mighty Rivers seek the ocean.
Not by our brethren was our food discovered: find with the Gods care for us, thou who knowest.
1.71.7

आā यदिषेyadiṣe नर्पतिंnṛpatiṃ तेजteja आनटānaṭ छुचिchuci रेतोreto निषिक्तंniṣiktaṃ दयौरभीकेdyaurabhīke |

अग्निःaghniḥ शर्धमनवद्यंśardhamanavadyaṃ युवानंyuvānaṃ सवाध्यंsvādhyaṃ जनयतjanayat सूदयच्चsūdayacca ||

When light hath filled the Lord of men for increase, straight from the heaven descends the limpid moisture.
Agni hath brought to light and filled with spirit the youthful host blameless and well providing.
1.71.8

मनोmano नna यो.अध्वनःyo.adhvanaḥ सद्यsadya एत्येकःetyekaḥ सत्राsatrā सूरोsūro वस्वvasva ईशेīśe |

राजानाrājānā मित्रावरुणाmitrāvaruṇā सुपाणीsupāṇī गोषुghoṣu परियमम्र्तंpriyamamṛtaṃ रक्षमाणाrakṣamāṇā ||

He who like thought goes swiftly on his journey, the Sun, alone is ever Lord of riches.
The Kings with fair hands, Varuṇa and Mitra, protect the precious nectar in our cattle.
1.71.9

माmā नोno अग्नेaghne सख्याsakhyā पित्र्याणिpitryāṇi परpra मर्षिष्ठाmarṣiṣṭhā अभिabhi विदुषviduṣ कविःkaviḥ सनsan |

नभोnabho नna रूपंrūpaṃ जरिमाjarimā मिनातिmināti पुराpurā तस्याtasyā अभिशस्तेरधीहिabhiśasteradhīhi ||

O Agni, break not our ancestral friendship, Sage as thou art, endowed with deepest knowledge.
Old age, like gathering cloud, impairs the body: before that evil be come nigh protect me.
