HYMN CXXVII. NIGHT.


रात्रीrātrī वयख्यदायतीvyakhyadāyatī पुरुत्राpurutrā देव्यक्षभिःdevyakṣabhiḥ |

विश्वाधिviśvāadhi शरियो.अधितśriyo.adhita ||

WITH all her eyes the Goddess Night looks forth approaching many a spot:
She hath put all her glories on.
10.127.1

ओर्वप्राorvaprā अमर्त्याamartyā निवतोnivato देव्युद्वतःdevyudvataḥ |

जयोतिषाjyotiṣā बाधतेतमःbādhatetamaḥ ||

Immortal. she hath filled the waste, the Goddess hath filled height and depth:
She conquers darkness with her light.
10.127.2

निरुniru सवसारमस्क्र्तोषसंsvasāramaskṛtoṣasaṃ देव्यायतीdevyāyatī |

अपेदुapedu हासतेतमःhāsatetamaḥ ||

The Goddess as she comes hath set the Dawn her Sister in her place:
And then the darkness vanishes.
10.127.3

साsā नोno अद्यadya यस्याyasyā वयंvayaṃ निni तेte यामन्न्नविक्ष्महिyāmannnavikṣmahi |

वर्क्षेनvṛkṣena वसतिंvasatiṃ वयःvayaḥ ||

So favour us this night, O thou whose pathways we have visited
As birds their nest upon the tree.
10.127.4

निni गरामासोghrāmāso अविक्षतavikṣata निni पद्वन्तोpadvanto निni पक्षिणःpakṣiṇaḥ |

निश्येनासश्चिदर्थिनःniśyenāsaścidarthinaḥ ||

The villagers have sought their homes, and all that walks and all that flies,
Even the falcons fain for prey.
10.127.5

यावयाyāvayā वर्क्यंvṛkyaṃ वर्कंvṛkaṃ यवयyavaya सतेनमूर्म्येstenamūrmye |

अथाathā नःसुतराnaḥsutarā भवbhava ||

Keep off the she-wolf and the wolf, O Urmya, keep the thief away;
Easy be thou for us to pass.
10.127.6

उपupa माmā पेपिशतpepiśat तमःtamaḥ कर्ष्णंkṛṣṇaṃ वयक्तमस्थितvyaktamasthita |

उषuṣa रणेवयातयṛṇevayātaya ||

Clearly hath she come nigh to me who decks the dark with richest hues:
O Morning, cancel it like debts.
10.127.7

उपupa तेte गाghā इवाकरंivākaraṃ वर्णीष्वvṛṇīṣva दुहितर्दिवःduhitardivaḥ |

रात्रिrātri सतोमंनstomaṃna जिग्युषेjighyuṣe ||

These have I brought to thee like kine. O Night, thou Child of Heaven, accept
This laud as for a conqueror.
