HYMN CXXXI. INDRA.


अपapa पराचprāca इन्द्रindra विश्वानमित्रानपापाचोviśvānamitrānapāpāco अभिभूतेabhibhūte नुदस्वnudasva |

अपोदीचोapodīco अपapa शूराधराचśūrādharāca उरौurau यथाyathā तवtava शर्मन्मदेमśarmanmadema ||

DRIVE all our enemies away, O Indra, the western, mighty Conqueror, and the eastern.
Hero, drive off our northern foes and southern, that we in thy wide shelter may be joyful.
10.131.1

कुविदङगkuvidaṅgha यवमन्तोyavamanto यवंyavaṃ चिदcid यथाyathā दान्त्यनुपूर्वंवियूयdāntyanupūrvaṃviyūya |

इहेहैषांihehaiṣāṃ कर्णुहिkṛṇuhi भोजनानिbhojanāni येye बर्हिषोनमोव्र्क्तिंbarhiṣonamovṛktiṃ नna जग्मुःjaghmuḥ ||

What then? As men whose fields are full of barley reap the ripe corn removing it in order,
So bring the food of those men, bring it hither, who went not to prepare the grass for worship.
10.131.2

नहिnahi सथूर्यsthūry रतुथाṛtuthā यातमस्तिyātamasti नोतnota शरवोśravo विविदेसंगमेषुvividesaṃghameṣu |

गव्यन्तghavyanta इन्द्रंindraṃ सख्यायsakhyāya विप्राviprā अश्वायन्तोव्र्षणंaśvāyantovṛṣaṇaṃ वाजयन्तःvājayantaḥ ||

Men come not with one horse at sacred seasons; thus they obtain no honour in assemblies.
Sages desiring herds of kine and horses strengthen the mighty Indra for his friendship.
10.131.3

युवंyuvaṃ सुराममश्विनाsurāmamaśvinā नमुचावासुरेnamucāvāsure सचाsacā |

विपिपानाशुभसvipipānāśubhas पतीpatī इन्द्रंindraṃ कर्मस्वावतमkarmasvāvatam ||

Ye, Aśvins, Lords of Splendour, drank full draughts of grateful Soma juice,
And aided Indra in his work with Namuci of Asura birth.
10.131.4

पुत्रमिवputramiva पितरावश्विनोभेन्द्रावथुःpitarāvaśvinobhendrāvathuḥ काव्यैर्दंसनाभिःkāvyairdaṃsanābhiḥ |

यतyat सुरामंsurāmaṃ वयपिबःvyapibaḥ शचीभिःśacībhiḥ सरस्वतीत्वाsarasvatītvā मघवन्नभिष्णकmaghavannabhiṣṇak ||

As parents aid a son, both Aśvins, Indra, aided thee with their wondrous Powers and wisdom.
When thou, with might. hadst drunk the draught that gladdens, Sarasvatī, O Maghavan, refreshed thee.
10.131.5

इन्द्रःindraḥ सुत्रामाsutrāmā सववानवोभिःsvavānavobhiḥ सुम्र्ळीकोsumṛḷīko भवतुविश्ववेदाःbhavatuviśvavedāḥ |

बाधतांbādhatāṃ दवेषोdveṣo अभयंabhayaṃ कर्णोतुkṛṇotu सुवीर्यस्यपतयःsuvīryasyapatayaḥ सयामsyāma ||

Indra is strong to save, rich in assistance may he, possessing all, be kind and gracious.
May he disperse our foes and give us safety, and may we be the lords of hero vigou r.
10.131.6

तस्यtasya वयंvayaṃ सुमतौsumatau यज्ञियस्यापिyajñiyasyāpi भद्रेbhadre सौमनसेsaumanase सयामsyāma |

सsa सुत्रामाsutrāmā सववानिन्द्रोsvavānindro अस्मेasme आराच्चिदārāccid दवेषःdveṣaḥ सनुतर्युयोतुsanutaryuyotu ||

May we enjoy his favour, his the Holy may we enjoy his blessed loving kindness.
May this rich Indra, as our good Protector, drive off and keep afar all those who hate us.
10.131.7
