HYMN CXL. AGNI.


अग्नेaghne तवtava शरवोśravo वयोvayo महिmahi भराजन्तेbhrājante अर्चयोarcayo विभावसोvibhāvaso |

बर्हद्भानोbṛhadbhāno शवसाśavasā वाजमुक्थ्यंvājamukthyaṃ दधासिdadhāsi दाशुषेdāśuṣe कवेkave ||

AGNI, life-power and fame are thine: thy fires blaze mightily, thou rich in wealth of beams!
Sage, passing bright, thou givest to the worshipper, with strength, the food that merits laud.
10.140.1

पावकवर्चाःpāvakavarcāḥ शुक्रवर्चाśukravarcā अनूनवर्चाanūnavarcā उदियर्षिudiyarṣi भानुनाbhānunā |

पुत्रोputro मातराmātarā विचरन्नुपावसिvicarannupāvasi पर्णक्षिpṛṇakṣi रोदसीrodasī उभेubhe ||

With brilliant, purifying sheen, with perfect sheen thou liftest up thyself in light.
Thou, visiting both thy Mothers, aidest them as Son: thou joinest close the earth and heaven.
10.140.2

ऊर्जोūrjo नपाज्जातवेदःnapājjātavedaḥ सुशस्तिभिर्मन्दस्वsuśastibhirmandasva धीतिभिर्हितःdhītibhirhitaḥ |

तवेtve इषःiṣaḥ संsaṃ दधुर्भूरिवर्पसश्चित्रोतयोdadhurbhūrivarpasaścitrotayo वामजाताःvāmajātāḥ ||

O Jātavedas, Son of Strength, rejoice ihyself, gracious, in our fair hymns and songs.
In thee are treasured various forms of strengthening food, born nobly and of wondrous help.
10.140.3

इरज्यन्नग्नेirajyannaghne परथयस्वprathayasva जन्तुभिरस्मेjantubhirasme रायोrāyo अमर्त्यamartya |

सदर्शतस्यsadarśatasya वपुषोvapuṣo विvi राजसिrājasi पर्णक्षिpṛṇakṣi सानसिंsānasiṃ करतुमkratum ||

Agni, spread forth, as Ruler, over living things: give wealth to us, Immortal God.
Thou shinest out from beauty fair to look upon: thou leadest us to conquering power.
10.140.4

इष्कर्तारमध्वरस्यiṣkartāramadhvarasya परचेतसंpracetasaṃ कषयन्तंkṣayantaṃ राधसोrādhaso महःmahaḥ |

रातिंrātiṃ वामस्यvāmasya सुभगांsubhaghāṃ महीमिषंmahīmiṣaṃ दधासिdadhāsi सानसिंरयिमsānasiṃrayim ||

To him, the wise, who orders sacrifice, who hath great riches un der his control,
Thou givest blest award of good, and plenteous food, givest him wealth that conquers all.
10.140.5

रतावानंṛtāvānaṃ महिषंmahiṣaṃ विश्वदर्शतमग्निंviśvadarśatamaghniṃ सुम्नायsumnāya दधिरेपुरोdadhirepuro जनाःjanāḥ |

शरुत्कर्णंśrutkarṇaṃ सप्रथस्तमंsaprathastamaṃ तवाtvā गिराghirā दैव्यम्मानुषाdaivyammānuṣā युगाyughā ||

The men have set before them them for their welfare Agni, strong, visible to all, the Holy.
Thee, Godlike One, with ears to hear, most famous, men's generations magnify with praise-songs.
