HYMN XVI. AGNI.


मैनमग्नेmainamaghne विvi दहोdaho माभिmābhi शोचोśoco मास्यmāsya तवचंtvacaṃ चिक्षिपोcikṣipo माशरीरमmāśarīram |

यदाyadā शर्तंśṛtaṃ कर्णवोkṛṇavo जातवेदो.अथेमेनंjātavedo.athemenaṃ परहिणुतातprahiṇutāt पित्र्भ्यःpitṛbhyaḥ ||

Burn him not up, nor quite consume him, Agni: let not his body or his skin be scattered.
O Jātavedas, when thou hast matured him, then send him on his way unto the Fathers.
10.16.1

शर्तंśṛtaṃ यदाyadā करसिkarasi जातवेदो.अथेमेनंjātavedo.athemenaṃ परिpari दत्तात्पित्र्भ्यःdattātpitṛbhyaḥ |

यदाyadā गछात्यसुनीतिमेतामथाghachātyasunītimetāmathā देवानांवशनीर्भवातिdevānāṃvaśanīrbhavāti ||

When thou hast made him ready, Jātavedas, then do thou give him over to the Fathers.
When he attains unto the life that waits him, he shall become the Deities' controller.
10.16.2

सूर्यंsūryaṃ चक्षुर्गछतुcakṣurghachatu वातमात्माvātamātmā दयांdyāṃ चca गछप्र्थिवींghachapṛthivīṃ चca धर्मणाdharmaṇā |

अपोapo वाvā गछghacha यदिyadi तत्रtatra तेte हितमोषधीषुhitamoṣadhīṣu परतिprati तिष्ठाtiṣṭhā शरीरैःśarīraiḥ ||

The Sun receive thine eye, tne Wind thy spirit; go, as thy merit is, to earth or heaven.
Go, if it be thy lot, unto the waters; go, make thine home in plants with all thy members.
10.16.3

अजोajo भागस्तपसाbhāghastapasā तंtaṃ तपस्वtapasva तंtaṃ तेte शोचिस्तपतुśocistapatu तंtaṃ तेर्चिःtearciḥ |

यास्तेyāste शिवास्तन्वोśivāstanvo जातवेदस्ताभिर्वहैनंसुक्र्तामुjātavedastābhirvahainaṃsukṛtāmu लोकमlokam ||

Thy portion is the goat: with heat consume him: let thy fierce flame, thy glowing splendour, burn him
With thine auspicious forms, o Jātavedas, bear this man to the region of the pious.
10.16.4

अवava सर्जsṛja पुनरग्नेpunaraghne पित्र्भ्योpitṛbhyo यस्तyasta आहुतश्चरतिस्वधाभिःāhutaścaratisvadhābhiḥ |

अयुर्वसानayurvasāna उपupa वेतुvetu शेषःśeṣaḥ संsaṃ गछतान्तन्वाghachatāntanvā जातवेदःjātavedaḥ ||

Again, O Agni, to the Fathers send him who, offered in thee, goes with our oblations.
Wearing new life let him increase his offspring: let him rejoin a body, Jātavedas.
10.16.5

यतyat तेte कर्ष्णःkṛṣṇaḥ शकुनśakuna आतुतोदātutoda पिपीलःpipīlaḥ सर्पsarpa उतuta वाश्वापदःvāśvāpadaḥ |

अग्निषaghniṣ टदṭad विश्वादगदंviśvādaghadaṃ कर्णोतुkṛṇotu सोमश्चsomaśca योब्राह्मणानाविवेशyobrāhmaṇānāviveśa ||

What wound soe’er the dark bird hath inflicted, the emmet, or the serpent, or the jackal,
May Agni who devoureth all things heal it and Soma who hath passed into the Brahmans.
10.16.6

अग्नेर्वर्मaghnervarma परिpari गोभिर्व्ययस्वghobhirvyayasva संsaṃ परोर्णुष्वprorṇuṣva पीवसामेदसाpīvasāmedasā चca |

नेतnet तवाtvā धर्ष्णुर्हरसाdhṛṣṇurharasā जर्ह्र्षाणोjarhṛṣāṇo दध्र्ग्विधक्ष्यनdadhṛghvidhakṣyan पर्यङखयातेparyaṅkhayāte ||

Shield thee with flesh against the flames of Agni, encompass thee about with fat and marrow,
So will the Bold One, eager to attack thee with fierce glow fail to girdle and consume thee.
10.16.7

इममग्नेimamaghne चमसंcamasaṃ माmā विvi जिह्वरःjihvaraḥ परियोpriyo देवानामुतसोम्यानामdevānāmutasomyānām |

एषeṣa यश्चमसोyaścamaso देवपानस्तस्मिनdevapānastasmin देवाdevā अम्र्तामादयन्तेamṛtāmādayante ||

Forbear, O Agni, to upset this ladle: the Gods and they who merit Soma love it.
This ladle, this which serves the Gods to drink from, in this the Immortal Deities rejoice them.
10.16.8

करव्यादमग्निंkravyādamaghniṃ परpra हिणोमिhiṇomi दूरंdūraṃ यमराज्ञोyamarājño गछतुरिप्रवाहःghachaturipravāhaḥ |

इहैवायमितरोihaivāyamitaro जातवेदाjātavedā देवेभ्योdevebhyo हव्यंवहतुhavyaṃvahatu परजाननprajānan ||

1 send afar flesh eating Agni, bearing off stains may he depart to Yama's subjects.
But let this other Jātavedas carry oblation to the Gods, for he is skilful.
10.16.9

योyo अग्निःaghniḥ करव्यातkravyāt परविवेशpraviveśa वोvo गर्हमिमंghṛhamimaṃ पश्यन्नितरंजातवेदसमpaśyannitaraṃjātavedasam |

तंtaṃ हरामिharāmi पित्र्यज्ञायpitṛyajñāya देवंdevaṃ सsa घर्ममिन्वातgharmaminvāt परमेparame सधस्थेsadhasthe ||

I choose as God for Father-worship Agni, flesh-eater, who hath past within your dwelling,
While looking on this other Jātavedas. Let him light flames in the supreme assembly.
10.16.10

योyo अग्निःaghniḥ करव्यवाहनःkravyavāhanaḥ पितॄनpitṝn यक्षदyakṣad रताव्र्धःṛtāvṛdhaḥ |

परेदुहव्यानिpreduhavyāni वोचतिvocati देवेभ्यश्चdevebhyaśca पित्र्भ्यpitṛbhya आā ||

With offerings meet let Agni bring the Fathers who support the Law.
Let him announce oblations paid to Fathers and to Deities.
10.16.11

उशन्तस्त्वाuśantastvā निni धीमह्युशन्तःdhīmahyuśantaḥ समिधीमहिsamidhīmahi |

उशन्नुशतuśannuśata आā वहvaha पितॄनpitṝn हविषेhaviṣe अत्तवेattave ||

Right gladly would we set thee down, right gladly make thee burn and glow.
Gladly bring yearning Fathers nigh to cat the food of sacrifice.
10.16.12

यंyaṃ तवमग्नेtvamaghne समदहस्तमुsamadahastamu निर्वापयाnirvāpayā पुनःpunaḥ |

कियाम्ब्वत्रkiyāmbvatra रोहतुrohatu पाकदूर्वाpākadūrvā वयल्कशाvyalkaśā ||

Cool, Agni, and again refresh the spot which thou hast scorched and burnt.
Here let the water-lily grow, and tender grass and leafy herb.
10.16.13

शीतिकेśītike शीतिकावतिśītikāvati हलादिकेhlādike हलादिकावतिhlādikāvati |

मण्डूक्याmaṇḍūkyā सुसंsusaṃ गमghama इमंimaṃ सवग्निंsvaghniṃ हर्षयharṣaya ||

O full of coolness, thou cool Plant, full of fresh moisture, freshening Herb,
Come hither with the female frog: fill with delight this Agni here.
