HYMN XVII. VARIOUS DEITIES.


तवष्टाtvaṣṭā दुहित्रेduhitre वहतुंvahatuṃ कर्णोतीतीदंkṛṇotītīdaṃ विश्वंviśvaṃ भुवनंसमेतिbhuvanaṃsameti |

यमस्यyamasya माताmātā पर्युह्यमानाparyuhyamānā महोmaho जायाjāyā विवस्वतोननाशvivasvatonanāśa ||

TVASTAR prepares the bridal of his Daughter: all the world hears the tidings and assembles.
But Yama's Mother, Spouse of great Vivasvān, vanished as she was carried to her dwelling.
10.17.1

अपागूहन्नम्र्तांapāghūhannamṛtāṃ मर्त्येभ्यःmartyebhyaḥ कर्त्वीkṛtvī सवर्णामददुर्विवस्वतेsavarṇāmadadurvivasvate |

उताश्विनावभरदutāśvināvabharad यतyat तदसीदजहादुtadasīdajahādu दवामिथुनाdvāmithunā सरण्यूःsaraṇyūḥ ||

From mortal men they hid the Immortal Lady, made one like her and gave her to Vivasvān.
Saranyu brought to him the Aśvin brothers, and then deserted both twinned pairs of children.
10.17.2

पूषाpūṣā तवेतश्च्यावयतुtvetaścyāvayatu परpra विद्वाननष्टपशुर्भुवनस्यvidvānanaṣṭapaśurbhuvanasya गोपाःghopāḥ |

सsa तवैतेभ्यःtvaitebhyaḥ परिpari ददतdadat पित्र्भ्यो.अग्निर्देवेभ्यःpitṛbhyo.aghnirdevebhyaḥ सुविदत्रियेभ्यःsuvidatriyebhyaḥ ||

Guard of the world, whose cattle ne’er are injured, may Pūṣan bear thee hence, for he hath knowledge.
May he consign thee to these Fathers' keeping, and to the gracious Gods let Agni give thee.
10.17.3

आयुर्विश्वायुःāyurviśvāyuḥ परिpari पासतिpāsati तवाtvā पूषाpūṣā तवाtvā पातुpātu परपथेपुरस्तातprapathepurastāt |

यत्रसतेyatrasate सुक्र्तोsukṛto यत्रyatra तेte ययुस्तत्रyayustatra तवादेवःtvādevaḥ सविताsavitā दधातुdadhātu ||

May Āyu, giver of all life, protect thee, and bear thee forward on the distant pathway.
Thither let Savitar the God transport thee, where dwell the pious who have passed-before thee.
10.17.4

पूषेमाpūṣemā आशाāśā अनुanu वेदveda सर्वाःsarvāḥ सोso अस्मानभयतमेननेषतasmānabhayatamenaneṣat |

सवस्तिदाsvastidā आघ्र्णिःāghṛṇiḥ सर्ववीरो.अप्रयुछनsarvavīro.aprayuchan पुरpura एतुप्रजाननetuprajānan ||

Pūṣan knows all these realms: may he conduct us by ways that are most free from fear and danger.
Giver of blessings, glowing, all-heroic, may he, thewise and watchful, go before us.
10.17.5

परपथेprapathe पथमजनिष्टpathamajaniṣṭa पूषाpūṣā परपथेprapathe दिवःdivaḥ परपथेप्र्थिव्याःprapathepṛthivyāḥ |

उभेubhe अभिabhi परियतमेpriyatame सधस्थेsadhasthe आā चca पराparā चचरतिcacarati परजाननprajānan ||

Pūṣan was born to move on distant pathways, on the road far from earth and far from heaven.
To both most wonted places of assembly he travels and returns with perfect knowledge.
10.17.6

सरस्वतींsarasvatīṃ देवयन्तोdevayanto हवन्तेhavante सरस्वतीमध्वरेsarasvatīmadhvare तायमानेtāyamāne |

सरस्वतींsarasvatīṃ सुक्र्तोsukṛto अह्वयन्तahvayanta सरस्वतीsarasvatī दाशुषेdāśuṣe वार्यंvāryaṃ दातdāt ||

The pious call Sarasvatī, they worship Sarasvatī while sacrifice proceedeth.
The pious called Sarasvatī aforetime. Sarasvatī send bliss to him who giveth.
10.17.7

सरस्वतिsarasvati याyā सरथंsarathaṃ ययथyayatha सवधाभिर्देविsvadhābhirdevi पित्र्भिर्मदन्तीpitṛbhirmadantī |

आसद्यास्मिनāsadyāsmin बर्हिषिbarhiṣi मादयस्वानमीवाmādayasvānamīvā इषiṣa आधेह्यस्मेādhehyasme ||

Sarasvatī, who camest with the Fathers, with them rejoicing thee in our oblations,
Seated upon this sacred grass be joyful, and give us strengthening food that brings no sickness.
10.17.8

सरस्वतींsarasvatīṃ यांyāṃ पितरोpitaro हवन्तेhavante दक्षिणाdakṣiṇā यज्ञमभिनक्षमाणाःyajñamabhinakṣamāṇāḥ |

सहस्रार्घमिळोsahasrārghamiḷo अत्रatra भागंbhāghaṃ रायस्पोषंrāyaspoṣaṃ यजमानेषुyajamāneṣu धेहिdhehi ||

Thou, called on as Sarasvatī by Fathers who come right forward to our solemn service,
Give food and wealth to present sacrificers, a portion, worth a thousand, of refreshment.
10.17.9

अपोapo अस्मानasmān मातरःmātaraḥ शुन्धयन्तुśundhayantu घर्तेनghṛtena नोno घर्तप्वःghṛtapvaḥ पुनन्तुpunantu |

विश्वंviśvaṃ हिhi रिप्रंripraṃ परवहन्तिpravahanti देविरुदिदाभ्यःdevirudidābhyaḥ शुचिरापूतśucirāpūta एमिemi ||

The Mother Floods shall make us bright and shining, cleansers of holy oil, with oil shall cleanse us:
For, Goddesses, they bear off all defilement: I, rise up from them purified and brightened.
10.17.10

दरप्सश्चस्कन्दdrapsaścaskanda परथमाननुprathamānanu दयूनिमंdyūnimaṃ चca योनिमनुyonimanu यश्चyaśca पुर्वःpurvaḥ |

समानंsamānaṃ योनिमनुyonimanu संचरन्तंsaṃcarantaṃ दरप्संdrapsaṃ जुहोम्यनुjuhomyanu सप्तsapta होत्राःhotrāḥ ||

Through days of earliest date the Drop descended on this place and on that which was before it.
I offer up, throughout the seven oblations, the Drop which still to one same place is moving.
10.17.11

यस्तेyaste दरप्सdrapsa सकन्दतिskandati यस्तेyaste अंशुर्बाहुच्युतोaṃśurbāhucyuto धिषणायाुपस्थातdhiṣaṇāyāupasthāt |

अध्वर्योर्वाadhvaryorvā परिpari वाvā यःyaḥ पवित्रातpavitrāt तंtaṃ तेte जुहोमिमनसाjuhomimanasā वषट्क्र्तमvaṣaṭkṛtam ||

The Drop that falls, thy stalk which arms have shaken, which from the bosom of the press hath fallen,
Or from the Adhvaryu's purifying filter, I offer thee with heart and cry of Vaṣaṭ!
10.17.12

यस्तेyaste दरप्सdrapsa सकन्नोskanno यस्तेyaste अंशुरवश्चaṃśuravaśca यःyaḥ परःस्रुचाparaḥsrucā |

अयंayaṃ देवोdevo बर्हस्पतिःbṛhaspatiḥ संsaṃ तंtaṃ सिञ्चतुsiñcatu राधसेrādhase ||

That fallen Drop of thine, the stalk which from the ladle fell away,
This present God Bṛhaspati shall pour it forth to make us rich.
10.17.13

पयस्वतीरोषधयःpayasvatīroṣadhayaḥ पयस्वनpayasvan मामकंmāmakaṃ वचःvacaḥ |

अपाम्पयस्वदितapāmpayasvadit पयस्तेनpayastena माmā सहsaha शुन्धतśundhata ||

The plants of earth are rich in milk, and rich in milk is this my speech;
And rich in milk the essence of the Waters: make me pure therewith.
