HYMN XX. AGNI.


भद्रंbhadraṃ नोno अपिapi वातयvātaya मनःmanaḥ ||

SEND unto us a good and happy mind.
10.20.1

अग्निमीळेaghnimīḷe भुजांbhujāṃ यविष्ठंyaviṣṭhaṃ शासाśāsā मित्रंmitraṃ दुर्धरीतुमdurdharītum |

यस्यyasya धर्मनdharman सवरेनीःsvarenīḥ सपर्यन्तिsaparyanti मातुरूधःmāturūdhaḥ ||

1 worship Agni, Youthfullest of Gods, resistless, Friend of laws;
Under whose guard and heavenly light the Spotted seek the Mother's breast:
10.20.2

यमासाyamāsā कर्पनीळंkṛpanīḷaṃ भासाकेतुंbhāsāketuṃ वर्धयन्तिvardhayanti |

भराजतेश्रेणिदनbhrājateśreṇidan ||

Whom with their mouth they magnify, bannered with flame and homed in light.
He glitters with his row of teeth.
10.20.3

अर्योaryo विशांviśāṃ गातुरेतिghātureti परpra यदानडyadānaḍ दिवोdivo अन्तानantān |

कविरभ्रंkavirabhraṃ दिद्यानःdidyānaḥ ||

Kind, Furtherer of men, he comes, when he hath reached the ends of heaven,
Sage, giving splendour to the clouds.
10.20.4

जुषदjuṣad धव्याdhavyā मानुषस्योर्ध्वस्तस्थावmānuṣasyordhvastasthāv रभ्वाṛbhvā यज्ञेyajñe |

मिन्वनminvan सद्मsadma पुरpura एतिeti ||

To taste man's offerings, he, the Strong, hath risen erect at sacrifice:
Fixing his dwelling he proceeds.
10.20.5

सsa हिhi कषेमोkṣemo हविर्यज्ञःhaviryajñaḥ शरुष्टीदस्यśruṣṭīdasya गातुरेतिghātureti |

अग्निंaghniṃ देवाdevā वाशीमन्तमvāśīmantam ||

Here are oblation, worship, rest: rapidly comes his furtherance.
To sword-armed Agni come the Gods.
10.20.6

यज्ञासाहंyajñāsāhaṃ दुवduva इषे.अग्निंiṣe.aghniṃ पूर्वस्यpūrvasya शेवस्यśevasya |

अद्रेःसूनुमायुमाहुःadreḥsūnumāyumāhuḥ ||

With service for chief bliss I seek the Lord of Sacrifice, Agni, whom
They call the Living, Son of Cloud.
10.20.7

नरोnaro येye केke चास्मदाcāsmadā विश्वेतviśvet तेte वामvāma आā सयुःsyuḥ |

अग्निंहविषाaghniṃhaviṣā वर्धन्तःvardhantaḥ ||

Blest evermore be all the men who come from us, who magnify
Agni with sacrificial gifts.
10.20.8

कर्ष्णःkṛṣṇaḥ शवेतो.अरुषोśveto.aruṣo यामोyāmo अस्यasya बरध्नbradhna रज्रṛjra उतuta शोणोयशस्वानśoṇoyaśasvān |

हिरण्यरूपंhiraṇyarūpaṃ जनिताjanitā जजानjajāna ||

The path he treads is black and white and red, and striped, and brown, crimson, and glorious.
His sire begat him bright with hues of gold.
10.20.9

एवाevā तेte अग्नेaghne विमदोvimado मनीषामूर्जोmanīṣāmūrjo नपादम्र्तेभिःसजोषाःnapādamṛtebhiḥsajoṣāḥ |

गिरghira आā वक्षतvakṣat सुमतीरियानsumatīriyāna इषमूर्जंसुक्षितिंiṣamūrjaṃsukṣitiṃ विश्वमाभाःviśvamābhāḥ ||

Thus with his thoughts, O Son of Strength, O Agni, hath Vimada, accordant with the Immortals,
Offered thee hymns, soliciting thy favour. Thou hast brought all food, strength, a prosperous dwelling.
