HYMN LV. INDRA.


दूरेdūre तनtan नामnāma गुह्यंghuhyaṃ पराचैर्यतparācairyat तवाtvā भीतेbhīte अह्वयेतांवयोधैahvayetāṃvayodhai |

उदस्तभ्नाःudastabhnāḥ पर्थिवींpṛthivīṃ दयामभीकेdyāmabhīke भरातुःपुत्रानbhrātuḥputrān मघवनmaghavan तित्विषाणःtitviṣāṇaḥ ||

FAR is that secret name by which, in terror, the worlds invoked thee and thou gavest vigour
The earth and heaven thou settest near each other, and Maghavan, madest bright thy Brother's Children.
10.55.1

महतmahat तनtan नामnāma गुह्यंghuhyaṃ पुरुस्प्र्गpuruspṛgh येनyena भूतंbhūtaṃ जनयोjanayo येनभव्यमyenabhavyam |

परत्नंpratnaṃ जातंjātaṃ जयोतिर्यदस्यjyotiryadasya परियंpriyaṃ परियाःpriyāḥ समविशन्तsamaviśanta पञ्चpañca ||

Great is that secret name and far-extending, whereby thou madest all that is and shall be.
The Five Tribes whom he loveth well have entered the light he loveth that was made aforetime.
10.55.2

आā रोदसीrodasī अप्र्णादोतapṛṇādota मध्यंmadhyaṃ पञ्चpañca देवानdevān रतुशःṛtuśaḥ सप्तsapta सप्तsapta |

चतुस्त्रिंशताcatustriṃśatā पुरुधाpurudhā विvi चष्टेcaṣṭe सरूपेणsarūpeṇa जयोतिषाविव्रतेनjyotiṣāvivratena ||

He filled the heaven and earth and all between them, Gods five times sevenfold in their proper seasons.
With four-and-thirty lights he looks around him, lights of one colour though their ways are divers.
10.55.3

यदुषyaduṣa औछःauchaḥ परथमाprathamā विभानामजनयोvibhānāmajanayo येनyena पुष्टस्यपुष्टमpuṣṭasyapuṣṭam |

यतyat तेte जामित्वमवरंjāmitvamavaraṃ परस्याparasyā महनmahan महत्यासुरत्वमेकमmahatyāasuratvamekam ||

As first among the lights, O Dawn, thou shonest, whereby thou broughtest forth the Stay of Increase,
Great art thou, matchless is thine Asura nature, who, high above, art kin to those beneath thee.
10.55.4

विधुंvidhuṃ दद्राणंdadrāṇaṃ समनेsamane बहूनांbahūnāṃ युवानंyuvānaṃ सन्तंsantaṃ पलितोजगारpalitojaghāra |

देवस्यdevasya पश्यpaśya काव्यंkāvyaṃ महित्वाद्याmahitvādyā ममारmamāra सsa हयःसमानhyaḥsamāna ||

The old hath waked the young Moon from his slumber who runs his circling course with many round him.
Behold the Gods’ high wisdom in its greatness: he who died yesterday to-day is living.
10.55.5

शाक्मनाśākmanā शाकोśāko अरुणःaruṇaḥ सुपर्णsuparṇa आā योyo महःmahaḥ शूरःसनादनीळःśūraḥsanādanīḷaḥ |

यच्चिकेतyacciketa सत्यमितsatyamit तनtan नna मोघंmoghaṃ वसुस्पार्हमुतvasuspārhamuta जेतोतjetota दाताdātā ||

Strong is the Red Bird in his strength, great Hero, who from of old hath had no nest to dwell in.
That which he knows is truth and never idle: he wins and gives the wealth desired of many.
10.55.6

ऐभिर्ददेaibhirdade वर्ष्ण्याvṛṣṇyā पौंस्यानिpauṃsyāni येभिरौक्षदyebhiraukṣad वर्त्रहत्यायवज्रीvṛtrahatyāyavajrī |

येye कर्मणःkarmaṇaḥ करियमाणस्यkriyamāṇasya मह्नmahna रतेकर्ममुदजायन्तṛtekarmamudajāyanta देवाःdevāḥ ||

Through these the Thunderer gained strong manly vigour, through whom he waxed in power to smite down Vṛtra,—
Who through the might of Indra's operation came forth as Gods in course of Law and Order.
10.55.7

युजाyujā कर्माणिkarmāṇi जनयनjanayan विश्वौजाviśvaujā अशस्तिथाaśastithā विश्वमनास्तुराषाटviśvamanāsturāṣāṭ |

पीत्वीpītvī सोमस्यsomasya दिवdiva आā वर्धानःvṛdhānaḥ शूरोśūro निर्युधाधमदniryudhādhamad दस्यूनdasyūn ||

All-strong, performing works with his companion, All-marking, rapid Victor, Curse-averter,
The Hero, waxing, after draughts of Soma, blew far from heaven the Dasyus with his weapon.
