HYMN VII. AGNI.


सवस्तिsvasti नोno दिवोdivo अग्नेaghne पर्थिव्याpṛthivyā विश्वायुर्धेहिviśvāyurdhehi यजथायyajathāya देवdeva |

सचेमहिsacemahi तवtava दस्मdasma परकेतैरुरुष्याpraketairuruṣyā णṇa उरुभिर्देवशंसैःurubhirdevaśaṃsaiḥ ||

O AGNI, shared by all men living bring us good luck for sacrifice from earth and heaven.
With us be thine intelligence, WonderWorker! Protect us, God, with thy far-reaching blessings.
10.7.1

इमाimā अग्नेaghne मतयस्तुभ्यंmatayastubhyaṃ जाताjātā गोभिरश्वैरभिghobhiraśvairabhi गर्णन्तिरधःghṛṇantiradhaḥ |

यदाyadā तेte मर्तोmarto अनुanu भोगमानडbhoghamānaḍ वसोvaso दधानोमतिभिःdadhānomatibhiḥ सुजातsujāta ||

These hymns brought forth for thee, O Agni, laud thee for bounteous gifts, with cattle and with horses.
Good Lord, when man from thee hath gained enjoyment, by hymns, O noblyborn, hath he obtained it.
10.7.2

अग्निंaghniṃ मन्येmanye पितरमग्निमापिमग्निंpitaramaghnimāpimaghniṃ भरातरंbhrātaraṃ सदमित्सखायमsadamitsakhāyam |

अग्नेरनीकंaghneranīkaṃ बर्हतःbṛhataḥ सपर्यंsaparyaṃ दिविdivi शुक्रंयजतंśukraṃyajataṃ सूर्यस्यsūryasya ||

Agni I deem my Kinsman and my Father, count him my Brother and my Friend for ever.
I honour as the face of lofty Agni in heaven the bright and holy light of Sūrya.
10.7.3

सिध्राsidhrā अग्नेaghne धियोdhiyo अस्मेasme सनुत्रीर्यंsanutrīryaṃ तरायसेtrāyase दमdama आनित्यहोताānityahotā |

रतवाṛtavā सsa रोहिदश्वःrohidaśvaḥ पुरुक्षुर्द्युभिरस्माहभिर्वाममस्तुpurukṣurdyubhirasmāahabhirvāmamastu ||

Effectual, Agni, are our prayers for profit. He whom, at home thou, Priest for ever, guardest
Is rich in food, drawn by red steeds, and holy: by day and night to him shall all be pleasant.
10.7.4

दयुभिर्हितंdyubhirhitaṃ मित्रमिवmitramiva परयोगंprayoghaṃ परत्नंpratnaṃ रत्विजमध्वरस्यजारमṛtvijamadhvarasyajāram |

बाहुभ्यामग्निमायवो.अजनन्तbāhubhyāmaghnimāyavo.ajananta विक्षुvikṣu होतारंhotāraṃ नयसादयन्तnyasādayanta ||

Men with their arms have generated Agni, helpful as some kind friend, adorned with splendours,
And stablished as Invoker mid the people the ancient Priest the sacrifice's lover.
10.7.5

सवयंsvayaṃ यजस्वyajasva दिविdivi देवdeva देवानdevān किंkiṃ तेte पाकःpākaḥ कर्णवदप्रचेताःkṛṇavadapracetāḥ |

यथायजyathāyaja रतुभिर्देवṛtubhirdeva देवानेवाdevānevā यजस्वतन्वंyajasvatanvaṃ सुजातsujāta ||

Worship, thyself, O God, the Gods in heaven: what, void of knowledge, shall the fool avail thee?
As thou, O God, hast worshipped Gods by seasons, so, nobly-born! to thine own self pay worship.
10.7.6

भवाbhavā नोno अग्ने.अवितोतaghne.avitota गोपाghopā भवाbhavā वयस्क्र्दुतvayaskṛduta नोवयोधाःnovayodhāḥ |

रास्वाrāsvā चca नःnaḥ सुमहोsumaho हव्यदातिंhavyadātiṃ तरास्वोतtrāsvota नस्तन्वोnastanvo अप्रयुछनaprayuchan ||

Agni, be thou our Guardian and Protector bestow upon us life and vital vigour.
Accept, O Mighty One, the gifts we offer, and with unceasing care protect our bodies.
10.7.7
