HYMN XXXIII. RUDRA.


आā तेte पितर्मरुतांpitarmarutāṃ सुम्नमेतुsumnametu माmā नःnaḥ सूर्यस्यsūryasya सन्द्र्षोsandṛṣo युयोथाःyuyothāḥ |

अभिabhi नोno वीरोvīro अर्वतिarvati कषमेतkṣameta परpra जायेमहिjāyemahi रुद्रrudra परजाभिःprajābhiḥ ||

FATHER of Maruts, let thy bliss approach us: exclude us not from looking on the sunlight.
Gracious to our fleet courser be the Hero may we transplant us, Rudra, in our children.
2.33.1

तवादत्तेभीtvādattebhī रुद्रrudra शन्तमेभिःśantamebhiḥ शतंśataṃ हिमाhimā अशीयaśīya भेषजेभिःbheṣajebhiḥ |

वयस्मदvyasmad दवेषोdveṣo वितरंvitaraṃ वयंहोvyaṃho वयमीवाश्चातयस्वाvyamīvāścātayasvā विषूचीःviṣūcīḥ ||

With the most saving medicines which thou givest, Rudra, may I attain a hundred winters.
Far from us banish enmity and hatred, and to all quarters maladies and trouble.
2.33.2

शरेष्ठोśreṣṭho जातस्यjātasya रुद्रrudra शरियासिśriyāsi तवस्तमस्तवसांtavastamastavasāṃ वज्रबाहोvajrabāho |

पर्षिparṣi णःṇaḥ पारमंहसःpāramaṃhasaḥ सवस्तिsvasti विश्वाviśvā अभीतीabhītī रपसोrapaso युयोधिyuyodhi ||

Chief of all born art thou in glory, Rudra, armed with the thunder, mightiest of the mighty.
Transport us over trouble to well-being repel thou from us all assaults of mischief.
2.33.3

माmā तवाtvā रुद्रrudra चुक्रुधामाcukrudhāmā नमोभिर्माnamobhirmā दुष्टुतीduṣṭutī वर्षभvṛṣabha मासहूतीmāsahūtī |

उनun नोno वीरानर्पयvīrānarpaya भेषजेभिर्भिषक्तमंbheṣajebhirbhiṣaktamaṃ तवाtvā भिषजांbhiṣajāṃ शर्णोमिśṛṇomi ||

Let us not anger thee with worship, Rudra, ill praise, Strong God! or mingled invocation.
Do thou with strengthening balms incite our heroes: I hear thee famed as best of all physicians.
2.33.4

हवीमभिर्हवतेhavīmabhirhavate योyo हविर्भिरवhavirbhirava सतोमेभीstomebhī रुद्रंrudraṃ दिषीयdiṣīya |

रदूदरःṛdūdaraḥ सुहवोsuhavo माmā नोno अस्यैasyai बभ्रुःbabhruḥ सुशिप्रोsuśipro रीरधनrīradhan मनायैmanāyai ||

May I with praise-songs win that Rudra's favour who is adored with gifts and invocations.
Ne’er may the tawny God, fair-checked, and gracious, swifthearing, yield us to this evil purpose.
2.33.5

उनun माmā ममन्दmamanda वर्षभोvṛṣabho मरुत्वानmarutvān तवक्षीयसाtvakṣīyasā वयसाvayasā नाधमानमnādhamānam |

घर्णीवghṛṇīva छायामरपाchāyāmarapā अशीयाaśīyā विवासेयंvivāseyaṃ रुद्रस्यrudrasya सुम्नमsumnam ||

The Strong, begirt by Maruts, hath refreshed me, with most invigorating food, imploring.
As he who finds a shade in fervent sunlight may I, uninjured, win the bliss of Rudra.
2.33.6

कवkva सयsya तेte रुद्रrudra मर्ळयाकुर्हस्तोmṛḷayākurhasto योyo अस्तिasti भेषजोbheṣajo जलाषःjalāṣaḥ |

अपभर्ताapabhartā रपसोrapaso दैव्यस्याभीdaivyasyābhī नुnu माmā वर्षभvṛṣabha चक्षमीथाःcakṣamīthāḥ ||

Where is that gracious hand of thine, O Rudra, the hand that giveth health and bringeth comfort,
Remover of the woe that Gods have sent us? O Strong One, look thou on me with compassion.
2.33.7

परpra बभ्रवेbabhrave वर्षभायvṛṣabhāya शवितीचेśvitīce महोmaho महींmahīṃ सुष्टुतिमीरयामिsuṣṭutimīrayāmi |

नमस्याnamasyā कल्मलीकिनंkalmalīkinaṃ नमोभिर्ग्र्णीमसिnamobhirghṛṇīmasi तवेषंtveṣaṃ रुद्रस्यrudrasya नामnāma ||

To him the strong, great, tawny, fair-complexioned, I utter forth a mighty hymn of praises.
We serve the brilliant God with adorations, we glorify, the splendid name of Rudra.
2.33.8

सथिरेभिरङगैःsthirebhiraṅghaiḥ पुरुरूपpururūpa उग्रोughro बभ्रुःbabhruḥ शुक्रेभिःśukrebhiḥ पिपिशेहिरण्यैःpipiśehiraṇyaiḥ |

ईशानादस्यīśānādasya भुवनस्यbhuvanasya भूरेर्नbhūrerna वाvā उu योषदyoṣad रुद्रादसुर्यमrudrādasuryam ||

With firm limbs, multiform, the strong, the tawny adorns himself with bright gold decorations:
The strength of Godhead ne’er departs from Rudra, him who is Sovran of this world, the mighty.
2.33.9

अर्हनarhan बिभर्षिbibharṣi सायकानिsāyakāni धन्वार्हनdhanvārhan निष्कंniṣkaṃ यजतंyajataṃ विश्वरूपमviśvarūpam |

अर्हन्निदंarhannidaṃ दयसेdayase विश्वमभ्वंviśvamabhvaṃ नna वाvā ओजीयोojīyo रुद्रrudra तवदस्तिtvadasti ||

Worthy, thou carriest thy bow and arrows, worthy, thy manyhued and honoured necklace.
Worthy, thou cuttest here each fiend to pieces: a mightier than thou there is not, Rudra.
2.33.10

सतुहिstuhi शरुतंśrutaṃ गर्तसदंghartasadaṃ युवानंyuvānaṃ मर्गंmṛghaṃ नna भीममुपहत्नुमुग्रमbhīmamupahatnumughram |

मर्लाmṛlā जरित्रेjaritre रुद्रrudra सतवानो.अन्यंstavāno.anyaṃ तेte अस्मनasman निni वपन्तुvapantu सेनाःsenāḥ ||

Praise him the chariot-borne, the young, the famous, fierce, slaying like a dread beast of the forest.
O Rudra, praised, be gracious to the singer. let thy hosts spare us and smite down another.
2.33.11

कुमारश्चितkumāraścit पितरंpitaraṃ वन्दमानंvandamānaṃ परतिprati नानामnānāma रुद्रोपयन्तमrudropayantam |

भूरेर्दातारंbhūrerdātāraṃ सत्पतिंsatpatiṃ गर्णीषेghṛṇīṣe सतुतस्त्वंstutastvaṃ भेषजाbheṣajā रास्यस्मेrāsyasme ||

I bend to thee as thou approachest, Rudra, even as a boy before the sire who greets him.
I praise thee Bounteous Giver, Lord of heroes: give medicines to us as thou art lauded.
2.33.12

याyā वोvo भेषजाbheṣajā मरुतःmarutaḥ शुचीनिśucīni याyā शन्तमाśantamā वर्षणोvṛṣaṇo याyā मयोभुmayobhu |

यानिyāni मनुरव्र्णीताmanuravṛṇītā पिताpitā नस्ताnastā शंśaṃ चca योश्चरुद्रस्यyoścarudrasya वश्मिvaśmi ||

Of your pure medicines, O potent Maruts, those that are wholesomest and health-bestowing,
Those which our father Manu hath selected, I crave from. Rudra for our gain and welfare.
2.33.13

परिpari णोṇo हेतीhetī रुद्रस्यrudrasya वर्ज्याःvṛjyāḥ परिpari तवेषस्यtveṣasya दुर्मतिर्महीगातdurmatirmahīghāt |

अवava सथिराsthirā मघवद्भ्यस्तनुष्वmaghavadbhyastanuṣva मीढ्वस्तोकायmīḍhvastokāya तनयायtanayāya मर्ळmṛḷa ||

May Rudra's missile turn aside and spare us, the great wrath of the impetuous One avoid us.
Turn, Bounteous God, thy strong bow from our princes, and be thou gracious to our seed and offspring.
2.33.14

एवाevā बभ्रोbabhro वर्षभvṛṣabha चेकितानcekitāna यथाyathā देवdeva नna हर्णीषेhṛṇīṣe नna हंसिhaṃsi |

हवनश्रुनhavanaśrun नोno रुद्रेहrudreha बोधिbodhi बर्हदbṛhad व.v. व.v. स.s. ||

O tawny Bull, thus showing forth thy nature, as neither to be wroth, O God, nor slay us.
Here, Rudra, listen to our invocation. Loud may we speak, with heroes, in assembly.
