HYMN XXVI. INDRA.


अहमaham मनुरmanur अभवंabhavaṃ सूर्यशsūryaś चाहंcāhaṃ कक्षीवांkakṣīvāṃ रषिरṛṣir अस्मिasmi विप्रःvipraḥ |

अहंahaṃ कुत्समkutsam आर्जुनेयंārjuneyaṃ नयny ॠञ्जेṝñje ऽहं'haṃ कविरkavir उशनाuśanā पश्यताpaśyatā माmā ||

I WAS aforetime Manu, I was Sūrya: I am the sage Kakṣīvān, holy singer.
Kutsa the son of Ārjuni I master. I am the sapient Uśanā behold me.
4.26.1

अहमaham भूमिमbhūmim अददामadadām आर्यायाहंāryāyāhaṃ वर्ष्टिंvṛṣṭiṃ दाशुषेdāśuṣe मर्त्यायmartyāya |

अहमaham अपोapo अनयंanayaṃ वावशानाvāvaśānā ममmama देवासोdevāso अनुanu केतमketam आयनāyan ||

I have bestowed the earth upon the Ārya, and rain upon the man who brings oblation.
I guided forth the loudly-roaring waters, and the Gods moved according to my pleasure.
4.26.2

अहमaham पुरोpuro मन्दसानोmandasāno वयvy ऐरंairaṃ नवnava साकंsākaṃ नवतीःnavatīḥ शम्बरस्यśambarasya |

शततमंśatatamaṃ वेश्यंveśyaṃ सर्वताताsarvatātā दिवोदासमdivodāsam अतिथिग्वंatithighvaṃ यदyad आवमāvam ||

In the wild joy of Soma I demolished Śambara's forts, ninety-and-nine, together;
And, utterly, the hundredth habitation, when helping Divodāsa Atithigva.
4.26.3

परpra सुsu षṣa विभ्योvibhyo मरुतोmaruto विरvir अस्तुastu परpra शयेनःśyenaḥ शयेनेभ्यśyenebhya आशुपत्वाāśupatvā |

अचक्रयाacakrayā यतyat सवधयाsvadhayā सुपर्णोsuparṇo हव्यमhavyam भरनbharan मनवेmanave देवजुष्टमdevajuṣṭam ||

Before all birds be ranked this Bird, O Maruts; supreme of falcons be this fleet-winged Falcon,
Because, strong- pinioned, with no car to bear him, he brought to Manu the Godloved oblation.
4.26.4

भरदbharad यदिyadi विरvir अतोato वेविजानःvevijānaḥ पथोरुणाpathoruṇā मनोजवाmanojavā असर्जिasarji |

तूयंtūyaṃ ययौyayau मधुनाmadhunā सोम्येनोतsomyenota शरवोśravo विविदेvivide शयेनोśyeno अत्रatra ||

When the Bird brought it, hence in rapid motion sent on the wide path fleet as thought he hurried.
Swift he returned with sweetness of the Soma, and hence the Falcon hath acquired his glory.
4.26.5

रजीपीṛjīpī शयेनोśyeno ददमानोdadamāno अंशुमaṃśum परावतःparāvataḥ शकुनोśakuno मन्द्रमmandram मदमmadam |

सोममsomam भरदbharad दाद्र्हाणोdādṛhāṇo देवावानdevāvān दिवोdivo अमुष्मादamuṣmād उत्तरादuttarād आदायādāya ||

Bearing the stalk, the Falcon speeding onward, Bird bringing from afar the draught that gladdens,
Friend of the Gods, brought, grasping fast, the Soma which be bad taken from yon loftiest heaven.
4.26.6

आदायādāya शयेनोśyeno अभरतabharat सोमंsomaṃ सहस्रंsahasraṃ सवांsavāṃ अयुतंayutaṃ चca साकमsākam |

अत्राatrā पुरंधिरpuraṃdhir अजहादajahād अरातीरarātīr मदेmade सोमस्यsomasya मूराmūrā अमूरःamūraḥ ||

The Falcon took and brought the Soma, bearing thousand libations with him, yea, ten thousand.
The Bold One left Malignities behind him, wise, in wild joy of Soma, left the foolish.
