HYMN III. AGNI.


आā वोvo राजानमrājānam अध्वरस्यadhvarasya रुद्रंrudraṃ होतारंhotāraṃ सत्ययजंsatyayajaṃ रोदस्योःrodasyoḥ |

अग्निमaghnim पुराpurā तनयित्नोरtanayitnor अचित्तादacittād धिरण्यरूपमdhiraṇyarūpam अवसेavase कर्णुध्वमkṛṇudhvam ||

WIN, to assist you, Rudra, Lord of worship, Priest of both worlds, effectual
Sacrificer,
Agni, invested with his golden colours, before the thunder strike and lay you senseless.
4.3.1

अयंayaṃ योनिशyoniś चक्र्माcakṛmā यंyaṃ वयंvayaṃ तेte जायेवjāyeva पत्यpatya उशतीuśatī सुवासाःsuvāsāḥ |

अर्वाचीनःarvācīnaḥ परिवीतोparivīto निni षीदेमाṣīdemā उu तेte सवपाकsvapāka परतीचीःpratīcīḥ ||

This shrine have we made ready for thy coming, as the fond dame attires her for her husband.
Performer of good work, sit down before us, invested while these flames incline to meet thee.
4.3.2

आश्र्ण्वतेāśṛṇvate अद्र्पितायadṛpitāya मन्मmanma नर्चक्षसेnṛcakṣase सुम्र्ळीकायsumṛḷīkāya वेधःvedhaḥ |

देवायdevāya शस्तिमśastim अम्र्तायamṛtāya शंसśaṃsa गरावेवghrāveva सोताsotā मधुषुदmadhuṣud यमyam ईळेīḷe ||

A hymn, O Priest, to him who hears, the gentle, to him who looks on men, exceeding gracious,
A song of praise sing to the God Immortal, whom the stone, presser of the sweet juice, worships.
4.3.3

तवंtvaṃ चिनcin नःnaḥ शम्याśamyā अग्नेaghne अस्याasyā रतस्यṛtasya बोध्यbodhy रतचितṛtacit सवाधीःsvādhīḥ |

कदाkadā तta उक्थाukthā सधमाद्यानिsadhamādyāni कदाkadā भवन्तिbhavanti सख्याsakhyā गर्हेghṛhe तेte ||

Even as true knower of the Law, O Agni, to this our solemn rite he thou attentive.
When shall thy songs of festival be sung thee? When is thy friendship shown within our dwelling?
4.3.4

कथाkathā हha तदtad वरुणायvaruṇāya तवमtvam अग्नेaghne कथाkathā दिवेdive गर्हसेgharhase कनkan नna आगःāghaḥ |

कथाkathā मित्रायmitrāya मीळ्हुषेmīḷhuṣe पर्थिव्यैpṛthivyai बरवःbravaḥ कदkad अर्यम्णेaryamṇe कदkad भगायbhaghāya ||

Why this complaint to Varuṇa, O Agni? And why to Heaven? for what is our transgression?
How wilt thou speak to Earth and bounteous Mitra? What wilt thou say to Aryaman and Bhaga?
4.3.5

कदkad धिष्ण्यासुdhiṣṇyāsu वर्धसानोvṛdhasāno अग्नेaghne कदkad वातायvātāya परतवसेpratavase शुभंयेśubhaṃye |

परिज्मनेparijmane नासत्यायnāsatyāya कषेkṣe बरवःbravaḥ कदkad अग्नेaghne रुद्रायrudrāya नर्घ्नेnṛghne ||

What, when thou blazest on the lesser altars, what to the mighty Wind who comes to bless us,
True, circumambient? what to Earth, O Agni, what wilt thou say to man-destroying Rudra?
4.3.6

कथाkathā महेmahe पुष्टिम्भरायpuṣṭimbharāya पूष्णेpūṣṇe कदkad रुद्रायrudrāya सुमखायsumakhāya हविर्देhavirde |

कदkad विष्णवviṣṇava उरुगायायurughāyāya रेतोreto बरवःbravaḥ कदkad अग्नेaghne शरवेśarave बर्हत्यैbṛhatyai ||

How to great Pūṣan who promotes our welfare,—to honoured Rudra what, who gives oblations?
What sin of ours to the far-striding Viṣṇu, what, Agni, wilt thou tell the Lofty Arrow.
4.3.7

कथाkathā शर्धायśardhāya मरुतामmarutām रतायṛtāya कथाkathā सूरेsūre बर्हतेbṛhate पर्छ्यमानःpṛchyamānaḥ |

परतिprati बरवोbravo ऽदितये'ditaye तुरायturāya साधाsādhā दिवोdivo जातवेदशjātavedaś चिकित्वानcikitvān ||

What wilt thou tell the truthful band of Maruts, how answer the great Sun when thou art questioned?
Before the Free, before the Swift, defend us: fulfil heaven's work, all-knowing Jātavedas.
4.3.8

रतेनṛtena रतंṛtaṃ नियतमniyatam ईळīḷa आā गोरghor आमाāmā सचाsacā मधुमतmadhumat पक्वमpakvam अग्नेaghne |

कर्ष्णाkṛṣṇā सतीsatī रुशताruśatā धासिनैषाdhāsinaiṣā जामर्येणjāmaryeṇa पयसाpayasā पीपायpīpāya ||

I crave the cow's true gift arranged by Order: though raw, she hath the sweet ripe juice, O Agni.
Though she is black of hue with milk she teemeth, nutritious, brightly shining, all-sustaining.
4.3.9

रतेनṛtena हिhi षमाṣmā वर्षभशvṛṣabhaś चिदcid अक्तःaktaḥ पुमांpumāṃ अग्निःaghniḥ पयसाpayasā पर्ष्ठ्य्नpṛṣṭhyna |

अस्पन्दमानोaspandamāno अचरदacarad वयोधाvayodhā वर्षाvṛṣā शुक्रंśukraṃ दुदुहेduduhe पर्श्निरpṛśnir ऊधःūdhaḥ ||

Agni the Bull, the manly, hath been sprinkled with oil upon his back, by Law eternal.
He who gives vital power goes on unswerving. Pṛśni the Bull hath milked the pure wiiite udder.
4.3.10

रतेनाद्रिंṛtenādriṃ वयvy असनasan भिदन्तःbhidantaḥ समsam अङगिरसोaṅghiraso नवन्तnavanta गोभिःghobhiḥ |

शुनंśunaṃ नरःnaraḥ परिpari षदन्नṣadann उषासमuṣāsam आविःāviḥ सवरsvar अभवजabhavaj जातेjāte अग्नौaghnau ||

By Law the Aṅgirases cleft the rock asunder, and sang their hymns together with the cattle.
Bringing great bliss the men encompassed Morning: light was apparent at the birth of Agni.
4.3.11

रतेनṛtena देवीरdevīr अम्र्ताamṛtā अम्र्क्ताamṛktā अर्णोभिरarṇobhir आपोāpo मधुमद्भिरmadhumadbhir अग्नेaghne |

वाजीvājī नna सर्गेषुsargheṣu परस्तुभानःprastubhānaḥ परpra सदमsadam इतit सरवितवेsravitave दधन्युःdadhanyuḥ ||

By Law the Immortal Goddesses the Waters, with meath-rich waves, O Agni, and uninjured,
Like a strong courser lauded in his running, sped to flow onward swiftly and for ever.
4.3.12

माmā कस्यkasya यक्षंyakṣaṃ सदमsadam इदid धुरोdhuro गाghā माmā वेशस्यveśasya परमिनतोpraminato मापेःmāpeḥ |

माmā भरातुरbhrātur अग्नेaghne अन्र्जोरanṛjor रणंṛṇaṃ वेरver माmā सख्युरsakhyur दक्षंdakṣaṃ रिपोरripor भुजेमbhujema ||

Go never to the feast of one who harms us, the treacherous neighbour or unworthy kinsman.
Punish us not for a false brother's trespass. Let us not feel the might of friend or foeman.
4.3.13

रक्षाrakṣā णोṇo अग्नेaghne तवtava रक्षणेभीrakṣaṇebhī रारक्षाणःrārakṣāṇaḥ सुमखsumakha परीणानःprīṇānaḥ |

परतिprati षफुरṣphura विvi रुजruja वीड्वvīḍv अंहोaṃho जहिjahi रक्षोrakṣo महिmahi चिदcid वाव्र्धानमvāvṛdhānam ||

O Agni, keep us safe with thy protection, loving us, honoured God! and ever guarding.
Beat thou away,
destroy
severe affliction slay e’en the demon when he waxes mighty.
4.3.14

एभिरebhir भवbhava सुमनाsumanā अग्नेaghne अर्कैरarkair इमानimān सप्र्शspṛśa मन्मभिःmanmabhiḥ शूरśūra वाजानvājān |

उतuta बरह्माण्यbrahmāṇy अङगिरोaṅghiro जुषस्वjuṣasva संsaṃ तेte शस्तिरśastir देववाताdevavātā जरेतjareta ||

Through these our songs of praise be gracious, Agni; moved by our prayers, O Hero, touch our viands.
Accept, O Aṅgiras, these our devotions, and let the praise which Gods desire address thee.
4.3.15

एताetā विश्वाviśvā विदुषेviduṣe तुभ्यंtubhyaṃ वेधोvedho नीथान्यnīthāny अग्नेaghne निण्याniṇyā वचांसिvacāṃsi |

निवचनाnivacanā कवयेkavaye काव्यान्यkāvyāny अशंसिषमaśaṃsiṣam मतिभिरmatibhir विप्रvipra उक्थैःukthaiḥ ||

To thee who knowest, Agni, thou Disposer, all these wise secret speeches have I uttered,
Sung to thee, Sage, the charming words of wisdom, to thee, O Singer, with. my thoughts and Praises.
