HYMN IV. AGNI.


कर्णुष्वkṛṇuṣva पाजःpājaḥ परसितिंprasitiṃ नna पर्थ्वींpṛthvīṃ याहिyāhi राजेवामवांrājevāmavāṃ इभेनibhena |

तर्ष्वीमtṛṣvīm अनुanu परसितिंprasitiṃ दरूणानोdrūṇāno ऽसतासि'stāsi विध्यvidhya रक्षससrakṣasas तपिष्ठैःtapiṣṭhaiḥ ||

PUT forth like a wide-spreading net thy vigour; go like a mighty King with his attendants.
Thou, following thy swift net, shootest arrows: transfix the fiends with darts that burn most fiercely.
4.4.1

तवtava भरमासbhramāsa आशुयाāśuyā पतन्त्यpatanty अनुanu सप्र्शspṛśa धर्षताdhṛṣatā शोशुचानःśośucānaḥ |

तपूंष्यtapūṃṣy अग्नेaghne जुह्वाjuhvā पतंगानpataṃghān असंदितोasaṃdito विvi सर्जsṛja विष्वगviṣvagh उल्काःulkāḥ ||

Forth go in rapid flight thy whirling weapons: follow them closely, glowing in thy fury.
Spread with thy tongue the winged flames, O Agni; unfettered, cast thy firebrands all around thee.
4.4.2

परतिprati सपशोspaśo विvi सर्जsṛja तूर्णितमोtūrṇitamo भवाbhavā पायुरpāyur विशोviśo अस्याasyā अदब्धःadabdhaḥ |

योyo नोno दूरेdūre अघशंसोaghaśaṃso योyo अन्त्यanty अग्नेaghne माकिषmākiṣ टेṭe वयथिरvyathir आā दधर्षीतdadharṣīt ||

Send thy spies forward, fleetest in thy motion; be, ne’er deceived, the guardian of this people
From him who, near or far, is bent on evil, and let no trouble sent from thee o’ercome us.
4.4.3

उदud अग्नेaghne तिष्ठtiṣṭha परत्यpraty आā तनुष्वtanuṣva नयny अमित्रांamitrāṃ ओषतातoṣatāt तिग्महेतेtighmahete |

योyo नोno अरातिंarātiṃ समिधानsamidhāna चक्रेcakre नीचाnīcā तंtaṃ धक्ष्यdhakṣy अतसंatasaṃ नna शुष्कमśuṣkam ||

Rise up, O Agni, spread thee out before us: burn down our foes, thou who hast sharpened arrows.
Him, blazing Agni! who hath worked us mischief, consume thou utterly like dried-up stubble.
4.4.4

ऊर्ध्वोūrdhvo भवbhava परतिprati विध्याध्यvidhyādhy अस्मदasmad आविषāviṣ कर्णुष्वkṛṇuṣva दैव्यान्यdaivyāny अग्नेaghne |

अवava सथिराsthirā तनुहिtanuhi यातुजूनांyātujūnāṃ जामिमjāmim अजामिमajāmim परpra मर्णीहिmṛṇīhi शत्रूनśatrūn ||

Rise, Agni, drive off those who fight against us: make manifest thine own celestial vigour.
Slacken the strong bows of the demon-driven: destroy our foemen whether kin or stranger.
4.4.5

सsa तेte जानातिjānāti सुमतिंsumatiṃ यविष्ठyaviṣṭha यya ईवतेīvate बरह्मणेbrahmaṇe गातुमghātum ऐरतairat |

विश्वान्यviśvāny अस्मैasmai सुदिनानिsudināni रायोrāyo दयुम्नान्यdyumnāny अर्योaryo विvi दुरोduro अभिabhi दयौतdyaut ||

Most Youthful God, he knoweth well thy favour who gave an impulse to this high devotion.
All fair days and magnificence of riches hast thou beamed forth upon the good man's portals.
4.4.6

सेदsed अग्नेaghne अस्तुastu सुभगःsubhaghaḥ सुदानुरsudānur यसyas तवाtvā नित्येनnityena हविषाhaviṣā यya उक्थैःukthaiḥ |

पिप्रीषतिpiprīṣati सवsva आयुषिāyuṣi दुरोणेduroṇe विश्वेदviśved अस्मैasmai सुदिनाsudinā सासदsāsad इष्टिःiṣṭiḥ ||

Blest, Agni, be the man, the liberal giver, who with his lauds and regular oblation
Is fain to please thee for his life and dwelling. May all his days be bright: be this his longing.
4.4.7

अर्चामिarcāmi तेte सुमतिंsumatiṃ घोष्यghoṣy अर्वाकarvāk संsaṃ तेte वावाताvāvātā जरतामjaratām इयंiyaṃ गीःghīḥ |

सवश्वासsvaśvās तवाtvā सुरथाsurathā मर्जयेमास्मेmarjayemāsme कषत्राणिkṣatrāṇi धारयेरdhārayer अनुanu दयूनdyūn ||

I praise thy gracious favour: sing in answer. May this my song sing like a loved one with thee.
Lords of good steeds and cars may we adorn thee, and day by day vouchsafe thou us dominion.
4.4.8

इहiha तवाtvā भूर्यbhūry आā चरेदcared उपupa तमनtman दोषावस्तरdoṣāvastar दीदिवांसमdīdivāṃsam अनुanu दयूनdyūn |

करीळन्तसkrīḷantas तवाtvā सुमनसःsumanasaḥ सपेमाभिsapemābhi दयुम्नाdyumnā तस्थिवांसोtasthivāṃso जनानामjanānām ||

Here of free choice let each one serve thee richly, resplendent day by day at eve and morning.
So may we honour thee, content and joyous, passing beyond the glories of the people.
4.4.9

यसyas तवाtvā सवश्वःsvaśvaḥ सुहिरण्योsuhiraṇyo अग्नaghna उपयातिupayāti वसुमताvasumatā रथेनrathena |

तस्यtasya तराताtrātā भवसिbhavasi तस्यtasya सखाsakhā यसyas तta आतिथ्यमātithyam आनुषगānuṣagh जुजोषतjujoṣat ||

Whoso with good steeds and fine gold, O Agni, comes nigh thee on a car laden with treasure,
His Friend art thou, yea, thou art his Protector whose joy it is to entertain thee duly.
4.4.10

महोmaho रुजामिrujāmi बन्धुताbandhutā वचोभिसvacobhis तनtan माmā पितुरpitur गोतमादghotamād अन्वanv इयायiyāya |

तवंtvaṃ नोno अस्यasya वचसशvacasaś चिकिद्धिcikiddhi होतरhotar यविष्ठyaviṣṭha सुक्रतोsukrato दमूनाःdamūnāḥ ||

Through words and kinship I destroy the mighty: this power I have from Gotama my father.
Mark thou this speech of ours, O thou Most Youthful, Friend of the House, exceeding wise, Invoker.
4.4.11

अस्वप्नजसasvapnajas तरणयःtaraṇayaḥ सुशेवाsuśevā अतन्द्रासोatandrāso ऽवर्का'vṛkā अश्रमिष्ठाःaśramiṣṭhāḥ |

तेte पायवःpāyavaḥ सध्र्यञ्चोsadhryañco निषद्याग्नेniṣadyāghne तवtava नःnaḥ पान्त्वpāntv अमूरamūra ||

Knowing no slumber, speedy and propitious, alert and ever friendly, most unwearied,
May thy protecting powers, unerring Agni, taking their places here, combined, preserve us.
4.4.12

येye पायवोpāyavo मामतेयंmāmateyaṃ तेte अग्नेaghne पश्यन्तोpaśyanto अन्धंandhaṃ दुरितादduritād अरक्षनarakṣan |

ररक्षrarakṣa तानtān सुक्र्तोsukṛto विश्ववेदाviśvavedā दिप्सन्तdipsanta इदid रिपवोripavo नाहnāha देभुःdebhuḥ ||

Thy guardian rays, O Agni, when they saw him, preserved blind Māmateya from affliction.
Lord of all riches, he preserved the pious: the fees who fain would harm them did no mischief
4.4.13

तवयाtvayā वयंvayaṃ सधन्यसsadhanyas तवोतासtvotās तवtava परणीत्यpraṇīty अश्यामaśyāma वाजानvājān |

उभाubhā शंसाśaṃsā सूदयsūdaya सत्यतातेsatyatāte ऽनुष्ठुया'nuṣṭhuyā कर्णुह्यkṛṇuhy अह्रयाणahrayāṇa ||

Aided by thee with thee may we be wealthy, may we gain strength with thee to guide us onward.
Fulfil the words of both, O Ever Truthful: straightway do this, thou God whom power emboldens.
4.4.14

अयाayā तेte अग्नेaghne समिधाsamidhā विधेमvidhema परतिprati सतोमंstomaṃ शस्यमानंśasyamānaṃ गर्भायghṛbhāya |

दहाशसोdahāśaso रक्षसःrakṣasaḥ पाह्यpāhy अस्मानasmān दरुहोdruho निदोnido मित्रमहोmitramaho अवद्यातavadyāt ||

O Agni, with this fuel will we serve thee; accept the laud we sing to thee with favour
Destroy the cursing Rākṣasas: preserve us, O rich in friends, from guile and scorn and slander.
