HYMN XXXII. INDRA.


आā तूtū नna इन्द्रindra वर्त्रहन्नvṛtrahann अस्माकमasmākam अर्धमardham आā गहिghahi |

महानmahān महीभिरmahībhir ऊतिभिःūtibhiḥ ||

O THOU who slewest Vṛtra, come, O Indra, hither to our side,
Mighty One with thy mighty aids.
4.32.1

भर्मिशbhṛmiś चिदcid घासिghāsi तूतुजिरtūtujir आā चित्रcitra चित्रिणीष्वcitriṇīṣv आā |

चित्रंcitraṃ कर्णोष्यkṛṇoṣy ऊतयेūtaye ||

Swift and impetuous art thou, wondrous amid the well-dressed folk:
Thou doest marvels for our help.
4.32.2

दभ्रेभिशdabhrebhiś चिचcic छशीयांसंchaśīyāṃsaṃ हंसिhaṃsi वराधन्तमvrādhantam ओजसाojasā |

सखिभिरsakhibhir येye तवेtve सचाsacā ||

Even with the weak thou smitest down him
who is stronger, with thy strength
The mighty, with the Friends thou hast.
4.32.3

वयमvayam इन्द्रindra तवेtve सचाsacā वयंvayaṃ तवाभिtvābhi नोनुमःnonumaḥ |

अस्मां-अस्मांasmāṃ-asmāṃ इदid उदud अवava ||

O Indra, we are close to thee; to thee we sing aloud our songs:
Help and defend us, even us.
4.32.4

सsa नशnaś चित्राभिरcitrābhir अद्रिवोadrivo ऽनवद्याभिर'navadyābhir ऊतिभिःūtibhiḥ |

अनाध्र्ष्टाभिरanādhṛṣṭābhir आā गहिghahi ||

As such, O Caster of the Stone, come with thy succours wonderful,
Blameless, and irresistible.
4.32.5

भूयामोbhūyāmo षुṣu तवावतःtvāvataḥ सखायsakhāya इन्द्रindra गोमतःghomataḥ |

युजोyujo वाजायvājāya घर्ष्वयेghṛṣvaye ||

May we be friends of one like thee, O Indra, with the wealth of kine,
Comrades for lively energy.
4.32.6

तवंtvaṃ हयhy एकeka ईशिषīśiṣa इन्द्रindra वाजस्यvājasya गोमतःghomataḥ |

सsa नोno यन्धिyandhi महीमmahīm इषमiṣam ||

For thou, O Indra, art alone the Lord of strength that comes from kine
So grant thou us abundant food.
4.32.7

नna तवाtvā वरन्तेvarante अन्यथाanyathā यदyad दित्ससिditsasi सतुतोstuto मघमmagham |

सतोत्र्भ्यstotṛbhya इन्द्रindra गिर्वणःghirvaṇaḥ ||

They turn thee not another way, when, lauded, Lover of the Song,
Thou wilt give wealth to those who praise.
4.32.8

अभिabhi तवाtvā गोतमाghotamā गिरानूषतghirānūṣata परpra दावनेdāvane |

इन्द्रindra वाजायvājāya घर्ष्वयेghṛṣvaye ||

The Gotamas have sung their song of praise to thee that thou mayst give,
Indra, for lively energy.
4.32.9

परpra तेte वोचामvocāma वीर्याvīryā याyā मन्दसानmandasāna आरुजःārujaḥ |

पुरोpuro दासीरdāsīr अभीत्यabhītya ||

We will declare thy hero deeds, what Dāsa forts thou brakest down,
Attacking them in rapturous joy.
4.32.10

ताtā तेte गर्णन्तिghṛṇanti वेधसोvedhaso यानिyāni चकर्थcakartha पौंस्याpauṃsyā |

सुतेष्वsuteṣv इन्द्रindra गिर्वणःghirvaṇaḥ ||

The sages sing those manly deeds which, Indra, Lover of the Song,
Thou wroughtest when the Soma flowed.
4.32.11

अवीव्र्धन्तavīvṛdhanta गोतमाghotamā इन्द्रindra तवेtve सतोमवाहसःstomavāhasaḥ |

ऐषुaiṣu धाdhā वीरवदvīravad यशःyaśaḥ ||

Indra, the Gotamas who bring thee praises have grown strong by thee.
Give them renown with hero sons.
4.32.12

यचyac चिदcid धिdhi शश्वतामśaśvatām असीन्द्रasīndra साधारणसsādhāraṇas तवमtvam |

तंtaṃ तवाtvā वयंvayaṃ हवामहेhavāmahe ||

For, Indra, verily thou art the general treasure even of all .
Thee, therefore, do we invocate.
4.32.13

अर्वाचीनोarvācīno वसोvaso भवास्मेbhavāsme सुsu मत्स्वान्धसःmatsvāndhasaḥ |

सोमानामsomānām इन्द्रindra सोमपाःsomapāḥ ||

Excellent Indra, turn to us: glad thee among us with the juice
Of Somas, Soma-drinker thou.
4.32.14

अस्माकंasmākaṃ तवाtvā मतीनामmatīnām आā सतोमstoma इन्द्रindra यछतुyachatu |

अर्वागarvāgh आā वर्तयाvartayā हरीharī ||

May praise from us who think Qn thee, O Indra, bring thee near to us.
Turn thy two Bay Steeds hitherward.
4.32.15

पुरोळाशंpuroḷāśaṃ चca नोno घसोghaso जोषयासेjoṣayāse गिरशghiraś चca नःnaḥ |

वधूयुरvadhūyur इवiva योषणामyoṣaṇām ||

Eat of our sacrificial cake: rejoice thee in the songs we sing.
Even as a lover in his bride.
4.32.16

सहस्रंsahasraṃ वयतीनांvyatīnāṃ युक्तानामyuktānām इन्द्रमindram ईमहेīmahe |

शतंśataṃ सोमस्यsomasya खार्यःkhāryaḥ ||

To India for a thousand steeds well-trained and fleet of foot we pray,
And hundred jars of Soma juice.
4.32.17

सहस्राsahasrā तेte शताśatā वयंvayaṃ गवामghavām आā चयावयामसिcyāvayāmasi |

अस्मत्राasmatrā राधrādha एतुetu तेte ||

We make a hundred of thy kine, yea, and a thousand, hasten nigh:
So let thy bounty come to us.
4.32.18

दशdaśa तेte कलशानांkalaśānāṃ हिरण्यानामhiraṇyānām अधीमहिadhīmahi |

भूरिदाbhūridā असिasi वर्त्रहनvṛtrahan ||

We have obtained, a gift from thee, ten water-ewers wrought of gold:
Thou, Vṛtra-slayer, givest much.
4.32.19

भूरिदाbhūridā भूरिbhūri देहिdehi नोno माmā दभ्रमdabhram भूर्यbhūry आā भरbhara |

भूरिbhūri घेदghed इन्द्रindra दित्ससिditsasi ||

A bounteous Giver, give us much, bring much and not a trifling gift:
Much, Indra, wilt thou fain bestow.
4.32.20

भूरिदाbhūridā हयhy असिasi शरुतःśrutaḥ पुरुत्राpurutrā शूरśūra वर्त्रहनvṛtrahan |

आā नोno भजस्वbhajasva राधसिrādhasi ||

O Vṛtra-slayer, thou art famed in many a place as bountiful
Hero, thy bounty let us share.
4.32.21

परpra तेte बभ्रूbabhrū विचक्षणvicakṣaṇa शंसामिśaṃsāmi गोषणोghoṣaṇo नपातnapāt |

माभ्यांmābhyāṃ गाghā अनुanu शिश्रथःśiśrathaḥ ||

I praise thy pair of Tawny Steeds, wise Son of him who giveth kine
Terrify not the cows with these.
4.32.22

कनीनकेवkanīnakeva विद्रधेvidradhe नवेnave दरुपदेdrupade अर्भकेarbhake |

बभ्रूbabhrū यामेषुyāmeṣu शोभेतेśobhete ||

Like two slight images of girls, unrobed, upon a new-wrought post,
So shine the Bay Steeds in their course.
4.32.23

अरमaram मma उस्रयाम्णेusrayāmṇe ऽरम'ram अनुस्रयाम्णेanusrayāmṇe |

बभ्रूbabhrū यामेष्वyāmeṣv अस्रिधाasridhā ||

For me the Bays are ready when I start, or start not, with the dawn, Innocuous in the ways they take.
